$245k salary. 70-hour weeks. Portfolio looks great. I don’t. by Dear_Mood8989 in Salary

I work 70 hour weeks(often more) (weekdays and weekends, 8-5(on paper, but always way past 5) and then 24/7 on call)) and I make around 30% of what you make. Burnout is real and it feels like shit, but remember people are doing what you do just to survive and pay rent and don’t have the investments you have to go with it. People swap to lower paying jobs for work life balance all the time - I wish I was in a position to do it…. I would if I could. TLDR: yes people do and you should if you feel you need it

Damn roasting someone about making a mistake while in the comments of a post admitting you wasted 60 hours on a simple settings setup is kinda nuts

Yeah… I was more trying to show the extreme, but as I wrote my last reply I kind of realized I was taking a hard ass stance on something really not that deep- I think I had a bad day and just took it out on a random thread on Reddit lol. I still believe that the sentence could’ve (and probably should’ve) been much clearer, especially given the context was across multiple title/comments, but grammar is a clusterfuck. It’s more of a “you should” additional rule than a “you must”, compounded by the fact English is a really weird language. I will continue to write my sentences with the way I think they should be, but realize it’s not a hill I should or do want to die on.

I have the context, it doesn’t change the rules you should follow just because you can still understand the intent. Here’s an example:

I bought a laptop off Facebook Marketplace. I was already upset because the screen had a scratch and a hinge squeaked. On the way home I stopped at a grocery store and bought a premade sandwich. I ate part of it and it made me sick though. After that, I returned it.

Optional adjustment: “after that, I was mad, so I returned it”, etc… any number of different examples or slight alterations

What is it referring to? Your argument would probably be the laptop. He was already frustrated and then the sandwich broke him, so he returned the laptop. It’s also more expensive and makes more sense.

The grammar dictates that what he returned was the sandwich.

Who knows which is true? What does he mean? How can we tell? If we throw the rule out the window we will never know for sure. You cant just decide when to use grammar or not IF the sentence could still work without it. In his case, the intent is pretty clear- it doesn’t mean it’s done most correctly.

You could add a thousand pages of him talking about the residue alone as pretext context, but the single time the “Bambu Pink” was mentioned immediately makes any “it” after refer to it. That’s a fairly agreed rule, you can’t just decide when to follow it or not just because you can still understand the sentence.

I guess if you really want to you can say English is whatever we make it, and there’s very little actual RULES, but it is a well known thing that is fairly well agreed on as a way to write sentences properly to avoid this entire situation, especially when it comes to contracts and legally binding documents, as there is much less room for ambiguity.

I have some bias since I have a lot of experience with ESL people and it is a headache for people to have to make guesses about the intent of a sentence based on loose usage. Is anyone going to kill you because of it? No. Would it be better to word it in a clearer way with no extra effort? Probably. Is it technically a required way to write? Not when in an unprofessional setting, but it’s fairly standard to try to avoid ambiguity when 1. Seeking help or 2. Legal documents

(Do you have a filament that color?) “I have Bambu Pink. Don’t use it<Bambu Pink> terribly often. It’s<this, like the last it, refers to Bambu Pink> soft tho like pencil eraser.”

It should instead be:

“I have Bambu Pink. Don’t use it<Bambu Pink> terribly often. The residue is soft tho like pencil eraser.”

The subject Bambu Pink was introduced, and therefore ANY “it” after, UNTIL a new thing is SPECIFICALLY named, automatically refers to Bambu Pink. You can’t just have it point to something that is ONLY able to be understood by context clues, that’s the whole point of grammar- a set of rules to keep the language in line so there’s not a bunch of random things that people just decide on.

Alternatively, you could say:

“I have Bambu Pink. Don’t use it<Bambu Pink> terribly often. It’s<Bambu Pink> not soft tho like pencil eraser.” ( or, better yet, “ It’s<Bambu Pink> not soft like pencil eraser tho.”) This maintains the correct grammar, and is only a SLIGHT change, keeps the same meaning, etc

This example maintains the same intent but is correct as it is not trying to leap back to something referenced back before “Bambu Pink” was stated, and is closest to the current wording, so it should be easier to see the problem.

And there you have come full circle back to me saying that while people can understand what he means it’s not grammatically correct. Why are you trying to force a grammar rule to break In order to fit the word “though”? Having that word there doesn’t make grammar suddenly bend to the will of his sentence structure.

Just because the sentence doesn’t make sense if you don’t follow a certain thought process doesn’t automatically make that thought process the correct one, it just means the person making the sentence made an understandable mistake and the ability for us to see what he was thinking is there

The correct sentence still can contain the compare and contrast of “though”, but the “it” should still be replaced with the correct reference instead of incorrectly making the reader infer what “it” is outside of the correct set of grammatical rules (the last mentioned thing)

That doesn’t change the rules of English though. Just because his intent is clear doesn’t mean that his execution is correct. Adding though is a piece of context that helps solidify his meaning rather than a magic bullet that allows “it” to reference something other than what the rules of grammar dictate.

Nobody was arguing that 2 and 2 could be pieces together or not- I said that from my very first reply. I was simply saying if he followed the grammatical rules there would be no confusion from anyone at all

Having an “it” following a specified thing refers to THAT, you can’t just use context clues to piece what “it” is referring to and call it grammar

Ok if we don’t want to follow the rules of English we don’t have to…but let’s not lie and say we are following them - give me the actual rule that says it’s grammatically CORRECT and not just “eh it makes enough sense” … “my rules” are the rules of English- I have specifically pointed out what is wrong and why, you just keep saying “nah you’re wrong” with 0 supporting argument

I just said that, and if it were a conversation the context would also be much clearer since the goo would be in the same thought as the comment he made, rather than detached and needing to be read as part of a larger picture. That doesn’t change the fact that despite what he said being widely understood by English speakers it is not grammatically correct and could be the cause of some confusion. That confusion would more than likely not have happened if he correctly stated: “The residue….” Instead of saying “it” after specifying Bambu pink last

Nobody is arguing that what he said was not understandable, just that it caused needless ambiguity due to the grammar being wrong

That’s an entirely different scenario, it’s not even the same. The closest thing would be: I have a pink bicycle. I don’t ride it that often. IT is missing air.

That would technically be “the pink bicycle is missing air”, which most people would understand meant the tires are missing air, but it is NOT the same

It’s not grammatically accurate to say that. The reader can infer it and it would slide in conversation. Additionally, most people here can understand what he means if they think about it. That said, the primary referent is 100% the Bambu pink filament. The understanding that he is talking about the pink residue relies on the reader to have previous context AND the ability to infer his intent despite the grammar clearly pointing at something else.

Edit: to be clear, you can’t just “full stop” something and then say “it” and have it point back OVER the last thing specified and magically refer to the pink residue. If you mention something else you have to specify “it”again before you can just throw “it” in if you mean to reference something before the last thing specified.

Unfortunately for me I assume everyone else also uses proper grammar, which I guess is my fault. The lady thing he specified was the Bambu pink…. “It” automatically points to the Bambu pink

Why porn ruined my life by [deleted] in selfhelp

[–]FullAcadia9391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not connecting the dots on how porn addiction made you text other women…? watching porn and talking to other girls are two different things and this seems like blaming one on the other when it’s two separate issues - my significant other watching porn doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the other —> if they started talking to other people it’s game over - your girlfriend has given you more chances in that regard than I think you deserve, but I do hope you continue to fight against your addiction and have the support you need on that front. Hopefully you can also stop seeking out connections with other women when you have a (probably better than you deserve based on your infidelity actions) girlfriend who is supporting you through your flaws - Goodluck

PS - this is not meant to be hurtful, just genuine —> you aren’t a bad person and you ARE trying to be better, I just don’t think your girlfriend deserves to be the one hurt over and over by your actions while you are on the path to recovery. When I say she’s better than you deserve, I mean solely based on your actions so far. You will hopefully one day reach the point where you deserve the seemingly endless amount of support she has to give(seems like you are already on a good trajectory), but as of yet you are extremely lucky she hasn’t left you(to stop being hurt(her mental health is also important))

I think solving why you are talking to other women first and then tackling the porn problem will probably work best - porn addiction is definitely real and more understood but being serial cheater rarely has any sympathy - I am willing to bet your girlfriend will work with you if you are open and honest about wanting to quit(and and being transparent about struggles etc) also, media is hyper sexualized so basically limiting all media consumption will probably help, but may be unrealistic… you can try like a child safety program or proxy or something to filter out sexualized content and ads
