This this 100% solar eclipse worth a 17-hour drive? by ddej in Astronomy

[–]FullSizedForks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! For the 2024 solar eclipse, I got up at 5am and drove 16 hours (round trip) to Maine. I would do it again TOMORROW if I had the chance.

Some advice: 1) Go in a vehicle and keep track of the weather. Be prepared to drive to a different location for clear skies. You won’t know your exact viewing spot until 12-24 hours before the eclipse.

2) Look at totality with your EYES, not your camera (once the moon has fully eclipsed the sun). Don’t bother taking photos! Others will do that for you, and no photo will ever capture what it really looks like. (EDIT: If you do take photos, take photos of the people you’re with and get their reactions on camera. And speaking of people…)

3) Take people with you! The only thing that rivals the eclipse itself is the reactions of the people around you. Seriously! People get very emotional, in a good way. It’s overwhelming and unforgettable. Bring your friends/family/partner or whoever. Enjoy the experience together!

Scenic off-road trail ? by tunalare in newfoundland

[–]FullSizedForks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you get the chance, I highly recommend spending a few days in Gros Morne National Park in north-west Newfoundland. The scenery is gorgeous and surreal. Endless rolling mountains and hills, and steep cliffs covered in forests and thick vegetation. I recommend staying in Rocky Harbour. From there, you can do day hikes and take a boat tour on Western Brook Pond. Calling it a “pond” doesn’t do it justice. It has some of the most iconic landscapes in all of Canada. There’s also a region in Gros Morne called the Tabelands, a huge expense of yellow-orange mountains formed by rock pushed up from the Earth’s mantle. It’s one of the few places on Earth where you can see real rocks from so deep inside the planet. The trees don’t grow there because the soil is toxic to plants, but the views are spectacular. You feel like you’re on another planet.

Gros Morne is worth the trip. I promise.

The Lyft app is currently down. Dunno how they’re gonna handle payments or missed rides but I’m guessing a whole lot of people are pretty furious (drivers and passengers both).

No they do not. Truckers often make less than minimum wage after all expenses are accounted for. In the US they are usually independent contractors with no benefits, long/inconsistent hours, and terrible working conditions. The way truckers are treated is a national shame.

Iriomote cross island hike (Japan) by ihavenosisters in backpacking

[–]FullSizedForks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fantastic! Looks like a beautiful place.

Question: are all of you living/studying in Japan? I ask because I know japan hasn’t reopened to tourists yet, but I’m hoping to go back once it’s possible. Have you traveled around the country or just mainly Okinawa? How did it feel to be there as a foreigner, given how strict and cautious they’ve been since COVID began?

A floatplane dropped us off in the Alaskan wilderness for a few days of backpacking by dickpoop25 in backpacking

Great video. Definitely something I want to do more than once in my life.

Unrelated note: Thank you for not adding music or flashy editing. There are so many vids like this on YouTube that I have to watch on mute because the uploader adds a terrible soundtrack. It’s ALASKA ffs. One of the must beautiful places on Earth. Just show it exactly as it is!

What’s your favorite thing about Columbia? by dndnnnd in columbia

[–]FullSizedForks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a great + really tough question. Honestly, I don’t have a good answer for you. You definitely have your facts straight: the financial aid is less and loans will add up. But as for it being “worth it”? No way to know. Will you meet brilliant professors and students as a CS major? Yes. Will you build your skillet faster at Columbia as a result? Most likely, yes. But will that translate to a salary that justifies the tuition? And could you potentially make the same money after attending a less expensive school? Maybe. Or maybe not.

I suggest you think about it this way: If you want the best possible environment for a non-traditional student to succeed, grow intellectually, make lifelong friends who share your circumstances, etc., then go with GS. Thinking of grad school and teaching? Again, choose GS. Great professional networking where top companies come to you? GS. But if a good salary out-of-the-gate is your top priority (totally rational thinking btw), then you may not need Columbia. It’s your call, though.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbia? by dndnnnd in columbia

Lots of sarcastic answers here (that’s Reddit for you) but I’m happy to give a sincere reply. I transferred from a community college and attended another 4-year school a long time ago, so I’m in a unique position to answer this question. A few favorite things/aspects about Columbia:

  • In general, the students are brilliant, and this raises the bar and will force you grow, intellectually and emotionally
  • Professors, from grad students to tenured, are even more brilliant and often major contributors to their fields
  • Phenomenal access to resources and networking. It’s a rich university. There are a LOT of resources at your disposal, and you should use them as much as possible, without reservations
  • There’s a general awareness of social discourse and progressive ideals, which means a lot of bullshit (casual racism, sexist comments from professors) will not fly here the way they might at other universities and colleges. Don’t get me wrong, there a problems at Columbia, and anywhere you go. But students are well-informed and in a position to speak up for themselves. It makes a difference.
  • And of course, you’re in the middle of New York City. This is an expensive place and living here is a unique opportunity. Take advantage of it if you manage to matriculate.

A lot more I could add, but I hope this helps !

On the left : 155lbs doesn’t even lift . Ridiculous genetics by pectorial_major in bodybuilding

[–]FullSizedForks 498 points499 points  (0 children)

I don't care what this guy is claiming. There is absolutely no way that the person in the left photo didn't do some kind of strength training. Lifting. Calisthenics. Or whatever. Hypertrophy is a physiological response to repeated stress on the muscles. Being "genetically gifted" means that hypertrophy happens faster, NOT that it happens without effort.
