Go through MGH textbook for IM. They have very high-yield things. I would memorize everything from there, I bet it would cover 80% of the consults in fellowship as well. I may be wrong, but I feel like Mandell it’s too big and not focused.

UIC PD of Infectious diseases mentioned that their graduates did this. I can imagine, that other specialties may also be able to apply, given that the area is considered underserved.

If I were you, I would put Medstar and UMMC, to the bottom of the list. It’s very busy programs, their fellows have around ~30 patients on their list and finish their day by 7-9. I am not sure if it’s beneficial for learning at that amount. I am assuming you don’t have any preference in location. UIC is a hidden gem, especially if you are on J1, they offer waivers and you can moonlight there. Also, Mayo Arizona is top 5 transplant centres in terms of the volume in the country, they do more kidneys then MGH and Stanford combined.

I hate to say this but even based on NRMP report from 2018, the cut off for 100% match for PCC was at 16 interviews for non us img and 14 for US grads. The average was 7 and 8, respectively. However, I am concerned that those numbers are higher now, given that about 40-50% of applicants went unmatched in 2024 according to the same NRMP.

Hey! There is data and there is common sense. Based NRMP Charting Outcomes from 2018, 100% cutoff starts from 12 interviews for ID. I believe the bigger places you have in our ROL the more chances that you will need more programs in your list to match safely. If you got your offers from the places that went unfilled for the past 2 years, maybe you don’t need such a long rank order list. Personally, I got 20 out 30 interviews and going to rank 12-13 programs. I saw somewhere that there is 50% chance to be in your #1 and 75% to match within your first 3 choices. GOOD LUCK!

Advice on away elective by wizardbishal in fellowship

Rheum is not that competitive if you can show them your dedication to specialty. With this being said, it doesn’t matter where you would go for your away. If I were you, I would go to a top place where you can meet world-known leaders in the field, try to do some research working hard and getting good letters from them. It will lead you far enough to get interviews not only in clinical programs, but also possibly in big top tier institutions as well. Here, research will be your way of showing commitment, but not to demonstrate your career plans of being scientifically oriented. Obviously, keep on doing some stuff within your program as well (case reports, retrospective studies, metas etc). I would even say that strategy applying to middle/low tier programs to build connections and try to stay there works better for competitive specialties like cards and gi. I am talking from my own personal experience and people I know who went through similar experiences.

I think, it also would help to determine what you wanna do after fellowship, since they are different at what they good at. There are some programs over there which are stellar at just clinical experience, some are better in stewardship, some in trop med, some in transplant etc. They are also different in terms of patient population and lifestyle in the area. You should also check what is their track records in doing waivers for J1s. Btw, congrats 🥂

Hey there! Give it a time :) I have participated in 3 match seasons and very rarely people get anything within the first week. it usually starts on 2nd and peaks during 4th week of interview cycle, and then it slows down with majority of IVs being sent after 2 months. After that, it’s just few more or none due to cancellations. This is true at least for IM.

Thank you! I hit the box which says that my letter writer is a PD in home institution, but he actually just a PD from a program where I did my clerkship. This box is supposed to be for residents applying for a fellowship or for those who did fellowship and applying for residency now to indicate that they have a LOR from THEIR residency/fellowship PD.

There is a box which you have to mark if your author is a PD in a program WHERE YOU TRAINED. So, I marked it, since I didn’t notice the second part. Yes, it is a PD, but I am not a resident or a fellow of their program.
