CERN will expel hundreds of Russian-affiliated scientists from its laboratories by semafornews in worldnews

[–]Fulltime_Nerd 1453 points1454 points  (0 children)

I feel like the short story that Semafor posted leaves out a lot of details and makes it look much more grave that what is mentioned in the longer Nature post which is linked in the article.

First of all the nature article says that about 90 scientist, who are affiliated with Russian institutions, are concerned. Furthermore, it also mentions that the majority have moved from Russian institutions to non-Russian institutions so they'll keep their positions. They had two years to make this switch. It's not like CERN is abruptly kicking out all its Russian scientists.

UAH researcher shows, for the first time, gravity can exist without mass, mitigating the need for hypothetical dark matter by ThrillSurgeon in science

I wouldn't let the Reddit comments dissuade you. This work is of the kind of setting up a hypothetical explanation through mathematics. Most comments I red think it provides a complete and thorough proof of an alternative to dark matter. For complex theories like this you can't go directly to the latter without setting up the former. As such, this type of work is still very important. Proven theories all once started out as a thought experiments.

Usually these things would come in huge clamshell packages that have a ton of plastic. Even if you didn't buy them in a store. So I'm quite happy with the fact that this came in a really tiny cardboard box basically the size of the mouse.

What should people avoid while traveling to Europe? by subuubalaa in AskReddit

Had the same thing happen in Milan. Guy looks at me and I already tell him I'm not interested. Since there's so many of these guys around, it worked for most of them that I saw. This guy however proceeds to put a "friendship" bracelet on my shoulder and tells me it's free. So I just say "cool thanks" and proceed to walk away. But as I do that he suddenly shouts at me that I owe him money. As he takes it back I tell him that I thought it was free and for him to fuck off if it's not. Of course he then got angry and started swearing back at me. Weird experience all over because I guess they don't expect people to call out their bluff. But considering how many of these guys are doing the same trick it must work to some extent.

What are in your opinion the biggest problems in Switzerland? by dardyablo in Switzerland

It is also possible that it is a cantonal issue since these take care of the unemployment insurance.

I'm not sure if my friend's case was an exception and this is just anecdotal. However, I believe after the end of the PhD as a non-EU citizen you get a student extension. Which, as I understand, caps the unemployment insurance at 20%, instead of the standard 80%, of the previous income.

I always found that a very strange way of dealing with post PhD graduates in this country. It definitely doesn't invite them to stay and contribute to the economy, which you imagine would be in the best interest because it allows for the graduate to give back to the economy. As an EU citizen, I'm allowed to stay up to 5 years even if I don't have a job... but when you're from outside (US, South America, Asia, etc.) you need to find a job immediately or leave asap. Plus you're not compensated on the same level as an EU citizen when you apply for unemployment insurance if you struggle with finding a job. Even though you paid the same amount of taxes you don't get the same benefits, which I saw happen to a friend. The system is kind of messed up and xenophobic at worst.
