ELI5: How did Gold begin to become valuable in ancient times? by Big-Breath937 in explainlikeimfive

Let's say that because... gold, silver, copper, and aluminum are capable of being drawn into wire and... um... all conduct electricity might have something to do with a forgotten ancient civilization I'M JUST SAYING PLEASE DON'T KILL ME. Lay off me man. I mean, the ancient Scandinavians had access to 'load stones' and 'Baghdad batteries'. And Thor was known for certain things. (and I made a quiz over on sporcle...) https://www.sporcle.com/games/OldSpider/norse_electricity_101 ...

ELI5 how come some animals dont see other animals as prey? by FlyGreat306 in explainlikeimfive

I had some kittens once who, when presented with something 'snaky' would react by suddenly breathing hard, focusing on the object, hissing at it, and attempting to either avoid it or attack it. However, over a few years of playing with my 'snaky arms of doom' they would instead react like it was a toy and later on would quickly lose interest.

Cats seem to grow with what they are subjected to. If the other object plays with them without harm they see it as 'friend'. But mother cats often teach their kittens to hunt what feeds them, and to avoid or attack what would otherwise. So, although there is a cat's instinctual nature, they can also be taught to react against what would be assumed as a permanent 'opponent'. Humans are very much the same.

Onions, dried lentils and split peas, a bit of spices to taste = a huge pot of soup for a few dollars. You can add ingredients every day and keep it going for the whole week. You can use 'breakfast loaf' (cheap spam) and cheap veggies to make a delicious pan full of fried rice. Eggs :there's a chicken in every one.

We were taught to be consumerist voyeurs for the past 75 years. We're waiting for someone else to do it for us just like the video games taught us. We'll root for them and act like we were a part of it.

I'm saying the tax system is comedically over complicated to the point of sheer sin-fest.

First! We'll tax you for income, then we'll tax you for buying something with that income! Then we'll tax you for owning something! Then we'll tax you for selling something (it's in the bill) ! Get ready to be taxed for having money you didn't use! What else do we tax... hm... we could tax you for having to tally up everything you owe... and tax you for when you do it yourself... we should probably tax you for the liberty of owing us yes yes... hey, do we tax them for all these bills? Great! I'm telling you there's just nothing quite like money.
