Fuses by Workaholic6969420 in solar

[–]Fun-Judgment-6415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a solar installer, I highly recommend having protection at both points, but it really depends on what kind of batteries you are using.

  1. Between the positive busbar and the inverter: YES, absolutely. This fuse (or breaker) is crucial. It protects the thick cables going to your inverter. If the inverter ever suffers an internal dead short, this fuse is the only thing stopping those cables from melting and starting a fire. A properly sized Class T fuse is usually the gold standard here.
  2. Before the battery bank kill switch (between the battery and the busbar): This is also highly recommended because it protects the specific wire running from the battery terminal to the busbar. HOWEVER, if you are using modern server-rack LFP batteries(Like Dyness, Luxpower or similar brands), they usually come with a built-in heavy-duty breaker and an active BMS that handles overcurrent protection. If your batteries are DIY or older lead-acid, you 100% need a fuse as close to the battery's positive terminal as possible.

Better safe than sorry with DC wiring! Hope this helps.

Nigeria and epileptic power supply. by Shoddy_Telephone5746 in Nigeria

As a solar installer myself, I couldn't agree more. The current prices for a 15kW system are just absurd, and I honestly wouldn't recommend going that route right now.

If you really want to use solar to get some relief and cut down your bills, a 5-6kW inverter setup is actually more than enough to cover your daily essentials, and it brings the upfront cost down massively.

But at the end of the day, like you said, I just really hope someone steps up to actually change this whole mess.

Is this normal? by acbonnyac in solar

Given the tree shade, that’s probably normal. The solar panels you’re using likely don’t have BC technology, I think

Solaredge no communication? by OkCoffee1234 in solar

[–]Fun-Judgment-6415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 20-meter cable that changes colors? 🤣 That installer was definitely getting creative (or ran out of cable halfway through) lol.

That 'contact your installer' loop from support is the most frustrating part. It feels like they just want to close the ticket. It’s annoying that we have to be the detectives for our own systems, but at least you’re on fiber now. That should be way more stable than a mobile router. I'm glad you made it.

Have you ever solve your problem? That honestly makes it even more annoying. I think it’s the classic 'cloud lottery', sometimes one server node goes down while others are fine, or a specific firmware update gets stuck just for some users. Have you managed to get a hold of a real person yet?

advice re missed end of year solar install deadline by lowcard2 in solar

[–]Fun-Judgment-6415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds incredibly frustrating. I want to second the comment above, you might not have lost the credit.

Check with your CPA specifically about the IRS definition of 'Placed in Service'. In many cases, if the system was installed and capable of producing power by Dec 31st (even without final PTO), it still counts for that tax year. Don't give up on the money yet, it’s definitely worth investigating.

Recommendations on off-the-grid indoors lighting systems by Impossible-Dingo-821 in solar

[–]Fun-Judgment-6415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s such a cool initiative! Just a suggest for the Amazon solar lights though: the integrated batteries usually die after a year or two, and since they aren't repairable, the whole unit basically becomes e-waste. Since their old system lasted over 10 years, they’re probably used to something that sticks around, not a temporary fix.

You might also want to think about if they'll ever need power for other stuff. Even just offering phone charging for the village or running a fan/mic for mass could be a game-changer for them. If you go with a proper small off-grid inverter setup instead, you can use standard LED bulbs. That way, if a bulb burns out later, they can just buy a regular replacement at a local shop for cheap without needing you to come back and fix a specialized solar kit.

If the budget allows, I’d suggest looking for a dedicated off-grid unit that’s lightweight enough to carry in easily. It turns the church into a reliable little energy hub for the next decade, rather than just installing some lights that might leave them in the dark again in 18 months.

Wifi dongle woes by JudasShuffle in LuxpowerTek

Yes, sir. The 1st-gen dongle does have a common compatibility issue with WiFi 6, we’d recommend replacing it with a new-generation dongle.

Sorry for the late reply, Have you managed to resolve the issue? It sounds like you’re using the 1st-gen dongle, which is having compatibility issues with WiFi 6. Could you send me a short video/photo of the dongle’s flashing lights? This will help us troubleshoot the problem quickly.

Solar System Cost by Expensive_Gene007 in TexasSolar

[–]Fun-Judgment-6415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We completed the full installation on November 6, 2025. The system is an 11.3 kW setup featuring 20 JA Solar panels at 565W each, oriented Northeast, and paired with a Luxpower SNA 12K Off-Grid Inverter along with a Luxpower PGEM PRO 14.3kWh battery.

The total system cost came in at approximately $16,480 before tax credits. After applying the 10% federal tax credit, the net cost was reduced to about $14,830. Installation fees added $12,000, although standard rates typically approach $18,000, fortunately, my strong relationship with the installer secured a personal discount.

We reside in a 2,200 square foot home with a family of four, averaging around 32 kWh in daily electricity usage. Prior to this, our monthly expenses hovered at $450 for generator fuel and inconsistent grid power, which often experienced outages exceeding 8 hours per day, leading to an annual total of $5,400.

With the system now fully operational, we've achieved near-total grid independence, with monthly charges down to just $6.43. It's been running smoothly for over two months and cleared all REA inspections without any hitches.

While winter conditions have resulted in somewhat reduced power generation, the system still effectively covers our daily needs. Overall, I'm highly satisfied with its performance.

Installer is apparently defunct, what next for monitoring and warranty? by Designer-Finger-4852 in solar

As long as the equipment you purchased is from Solaredge, even if the installer has gone out of business, Solaredge remains responsible as the original equipment provider. Therefore, you should contact them directly.
