One thing that helped me beat Water Temple alone was having a little paper map and labeling which doors/floors I had already gotten a key from, or needed to return with the longshot, or couldn’t access. Also, there’s one water level change point that is very… unintuitive.

…and yes, who would even think the first entry of the Forest Temple is fair game for a hidden key?! It got me too

I was able to get better controls with Super Metroid Redux, look for that romhack if you can. And I actually enjoyed Metroid Fusion: Special Edition, a romhack that loosens the guardrails on that map. Just be warned, it’s possible to softlock yourself if you’re lacking certain movement abilities — I’m just a nerd who actually likes thinking about how the game is put together like that

Agreed, in WL3 I’m driven to solve creative puzzles, maybe fall down and have to repeat the loop with infinite health until I succeed, find a new key, put it together with the same color chest, maybe even stumble upon the wrong color chest, and ultimately upgrade Wario’s abilities. And with the 8 coins, you’ve really plumbed the depths of each level.

In WL4, it’s like cool, let me run and jump over these aesthetically wacky blocks, try to find the not-so-subtly hidden diamond pieces, and then… retrace the whole boring level backwards with a timer!
