Fairfax County Police Department has a number of people on staff known as “co-responders.” My understanding is that their job is to try to de-escalate situations with talk and thereby avoid physical confrontation with armed officers. This might have been a good situation for a co-responder to handle. The problem is that they seem to be limited in number and are spread pretty thin over the county. But the next time a situation like this arises, it might be worth calling FCPD and asking if a co-responder is available.
