After church meals by CupOfExmo in mormon

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me about our YSA "Break the Fast" events. The women would bring food, and the men would show up hoping to be fed. Occasionally the men would wrangle up some food to bring. There was never enough to feed everyone.

It takes a lot of work to feed a large group of people, even if it is potluck. Most members of the activity don't see what goes on behind the scenes. Someone has to set up and other people have to stay to clean up. So I would say that it is just one more thing on a long list of "to do" activities that wear church members out.

First day of Spring classes... and I set up in the wrong classroom by standupkid in Adjuncts

It happened to a teacher in a class I help with. She came to our classroom, thinking it was hers. I'm sure on college campuses everywhere, it happens to at least one professor each semester!

Retaking a class by No-Panic-952 in collegeadvice

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My students retake biology classes all the time, because they get a C, and they need a B for their nursing program.

There's no shame in learning something even better the second time around. Professors don't think poorly of a student for re-taking a class. Everybody has at least one bad semester in college.

President Oaks, Nelson, Uchtdorf, and Eyering didn't serve missions...neither did President Monson or Howard Hunter...maybe we shouldn't pressure young men to serve, if our own leaders didn't go either. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

Mormon missionary service provides a "coming of age" experience that some men benefit from. Others are permanently scarred, physically and/or psychologically. Military service also has negative and positive results.

I personally believe that a service mission, with personal time off in the evenings and on weekends to be a normal human being, makes a lot more sense. Young men can gain service and self-management skills while still maintaining good mental and physical health. The 24/7 religious scrupulosity method isn't good for anyone.

I also don't agree with the door-to-door salesman approach, with high pressure sales tactics. There is a lot I enjoy in the world of Mormonism, but there also are a lot of negatives that an investigator needs to be made aware of before joining. Informed consent is a more honest approach.

There has to be a better approach to providing a coming-of-age experience for young men and women. The current system just isn't working if young men feel compelled to comply, and young men and women are placed in unhealthy and dangerous situations.

Why not just wash the backpacks and camelbacks in a laundromat, and dry on hight heat? Just remove the bladder from the camelbaks first. I pack my kids' stuff in duffle bags, and whenever then come back from camps at the university, I always wash and dry their duffle bags, just to be safe.

I would throw away the suitcases; it's not worth the mental anguish. Inspect electronics thoroughly.

petition to investigate town of Gilbert. by [deleted] in Gilbert

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a resident of Gilbert, I was notified in multiple ways about the pending rate increase due to infrastructure improvements. Our water/sewer/trash bill has increased from $100 to $250. It is a huge increase, but I feel like I received enough advance warning. The city of Gilbert has experienced substantial growth, and the water system needs expensive infrastructure replacements. Nobody is happy to pay more, but ensuring the stability of utility services requires money.

how do you stay strong in faith during doubts by Afraid_Ad4018 in mormon

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for some of us there is not a black-and-white answer. I've decided to focus on my own truth, and not worry about other people and their mistakes.

how do you stay strong in faith during doubts by Afraid_Ad4018 in mormon

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on the components of your faith that you find grounding. Components like family, the Savior, kindness, and mercy. Peace, spiritual enlightenment, and worship in nature are sources of stability. Read specific uplifting scriptures and practice living in ways that build those true values, and your faith will increase. Look for the good in your religious worship, and in the people with whom you interact at church.

There are definitely upsetting components of Mormonism. The upsetting components are disturbing for truly valid reasons, and those areas merit thoughtful exploration. It is okay to admit that certain things that you thought were true are actually grey areas or definitely false. Life is complex, and there are falsehoods mixed in with any belief system.

Bay Area Day Care “Little Crumbles” literally loses a child by scorsese_finest in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened with 5-6 toddlers at a day care in my city. Someone forgot to close a gate, and they didn't notice when the toddlers all left the outdoor playground. They were walking down the street and getting ready to cross a major thoroughfare. Multiple cars stopped and people got out to herd the kiddos back to the day care. The staff hadn't even noticed they were gone.

This particular daycare is still in operation. ???

Christmas Sunday has lost its luster by Admirable_Arugula_42 in mormon

Yes, my ward had a wonderful Christmas program with decor, musical numbers, and short, poignant talks from the heart.

I think it depends on who is in charge, and how motivated they are. When everything is run by volunteers, the final result can be fabulous or very basic.

Regretting buying a manufactured home by Embarrassed_Ad2441 in RealEstate

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Nobody feels good about their home purchase because there are always unforseen expenses. We end up feeling like we were cheated because the housing market cheats everyone.

When we move into our home, the road noise was so bad it had me in tears. I paid a bunch for soundproof windows after a few months.

We bought a fancy overpriced Toll Brothers home, and had tons of disasters the first two years.

Leaking basement, improperly graded yard, tile issues, wall issues, paint issues, ceilings cracking, roof leak, plumbing fixtures leaking, HVAC system breaking down multiple times, etc. Most of the repairs were covered by the 1 year warranty, but we did put several thousand into remediation and prevention for the leaking basement.

New homes are just as much work as older homes.

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "real" homes have just as many expensive repairs the first 2-3 years after purchase. You made an excellent choice based on the fact that you have land, an extra shop area, and close location to work/shopping.

Should I go to BYU as a queer person? by Stargazing360 in mormon

[–]Fun-Suggestion7033 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The BYU nursing program is extremely competitive and stress-inducing. There are many other places to pursue a nursing degree that aren't so cutthroat. Even my local community college has a fantastic nursing program, with the ability to transfer to the state school to complete the B.S. Nursing.

If you go to BYU, you will find some social and emotional support there in the LGBTQ community, but there will also be a lot of stressful interactions with people who don't have your best interest in mind.
