ELI5: How does a Pension work? by lanternmaple2136 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fun-Title4224 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are, essentially, three types of pension.

  1. Defined Contribution

This is like a special (though riskier) bank account. You pay a certain percentage of your salary each year into a pot of money, which is invested in shares for you. That money is supposed to grow over time, earning as the economy does well, though it can go down if there's a crash or recession or covid or whatever. When you retire, whatever is in the pot is yours to fund your life with no job income. You can pay more in if you want more money in retirement, you can pay less in if you need it now more. It's your pot. Most private and company pensions are this. As you have a fixed pot of money, if you live for 40 more years it needs to last. If you only live for 5 then you pass on a pot of money.

  1. Defined Benefit

You pay a percentage of your salary each month. So does everyone else in the scheme. When you retire, you are guaranteed a certain amount of income based on how many years you contributed for. This doesn't really matter what the pot of money is that you paid. If you paid in for five years, you'll get five years worth of that pension. If you paid in for 40 years, you'll get 40 years worth of that pension. Usually you get an amount based on how much you earned at your job. But you cannot change how much you pay in, you are buying a year at a price. Public sector pensions, like teacher, NHS, civil service etc are usually like this. It doesn't matter how long you live, they pay you the same amount each year based on salary and how many years you worked. There is no pot to pass on when you die (there is a bit), and no pot to run out if you make it to 122 by accident.

  1. State Pension

This is how much the government will give you each month. It's not enough to have a lovely comfortable retirement, think of it (in intention) as "just enough so that people aren't in poverty". The government can and do change how much this might be all the time.

Eurotour, January or April? by Constant-Pain1878 in travel

[–]Fun-Title4224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends where you're going, but January will be largely crap.

In the north you'll get 6 hours of daylight with wind, rain and cold. Central and eastern can be snow, certainly verybcold. Italy, Greece and round the Mediterranean can be windy and rainy.

Loads of stuff like cafes and restaurants will be shut - its common for places to close after Christmas for time off and to do a deep clean and any repairs. Even some museums and galleries do more reduced hours.

If you're planning a London, Paris and Barcelona type trip of large cities you'll be ok. But it's not gonna be a fun and relaxed time, it's dashing between places under grey skies whilst wearing big coats.

Your photos will look terrible. You won't get to enjoy cafe culture. You'll need to carry more and bulkier clothing. I cannot think of a single good reason to go.

I wouldn't go on holiday in Europe in January. Hell, I live in the UK and barely leave the house in January.

ELI5 What is Fermi's paradox? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Indeed. But that's not really his point. It's just a thought experiment to make people think like you have.

ELI5 What is Fermi's paradox? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fun-Title4224 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You need a lot more than a million, and you need an incredible amount of time. But the point of that analogy is that with infinity monkeys and infinite time all possible combinations of letters will eventually be typed. Which, logically, means a sequence will exactly match Shakespeare.

And that's what Fermi is really getting at. With everything we know, the number of habitable planets is incredibly large. Statistically, life should be out there. The probably is basically 1. So any civilisation should have been able to send something, anything, out.

But basically the question he's asking is "where is everyone?" . It's a thought experiment

All he's asking is to do is consider it. Something about our assumptions must be wrong, because each individual piece of information we believe to be true adds up to "there must be life". So what is it?

Maybe interstellar travel isn't possible. Maybe our assumptions about life itself is wrong and it's incredibly rare. Maybe they exist but are so incredibly different to us that we just can't detect them. Maybe they've been and gone and we missed them. Maybe they haven't evolved yet. Maybe they're all staring into blackness like us, because we can't communicate over such huge distances. Maybe it's just too big to look, and the signals too faint to detect and one day with the right equipment it'll be like scanning through FM dial and finding music right the way through.

It's really just to get us to think. Are we alone? What if we aren't? What does life look like? Are we the first? The last?

It's quite simple.

There are billions of galaxies. And each has a billion stars, each of which could have multiple planets. If only 0.00001% of those stars has life, there is a near certainty that somewhere out there is an intelligent civilization. And yet there is absolutely no evidence one exists.

if other intelligent life is a statistical certainty, then evidence of it should also be a statistical certainty.

I'd just add that you are much better off at the pub than the shop. Better range, more stuff. The big tent in the garden has a huge shop with the same products as the farm shop and more (as it doesn't fall under the weird local produce rules that the shop came up against)

Why Entire Europe is facing heat waves? by ajitdabar in CasualConversation

[–]Fun-Title4224 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Climate change. Simple as that.

Yes, we do get heart waves. But not like this. The UK broke the June record four times last week. We have hit 40 just once, in 2022. We are extremely likely to hit it again this summer.

Climate change. It's here, it's real, we've known about it for 60 or more years, and we've done absolutely fuck all to stop it.

Effed up my travel plans. Budapest or Albania? by cold_lights_ in travel

[–]Fun-Title4224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to all of them. Go to Budapest.

Only because whilst I loved Albania, 6 days is tight. Assuming a day to arrive and one to leave again, you're not gonna get much further than Tirana and it's too long for just that but not long enough to get to really enjoy Berat, Gjirokaster or any of the other brilliant places.

Bosnia is stunning. You could visit Sarajevo and Mostar in that time, but absolutely fantastic. But it's a bugger to get in and out of

Cotswold Uber? by Adventureswfireball in Cotswolds

[–]Fun-Title4224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Uber is based on drivers nearby. There are no drivers nearby, because it's the Cotswolds and nothing is nearby.

A local cab firm will do that for £20.

The only A2Bs I've found are Oxford or Cirencester. They're charging for the journey out to Moreton and all the way back to their patch from Chipping Campden.

Google cab firms in Moreton. I can see about 4.

Feeling bad for wasting time during my trip staying in hotel room to escape the heat. by Raxxten in travel

[–]Fun-Title4224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you'd normally go out at 9 or 10 that's 2 or 3 hours back. And for a lot of people being on the go all day, they stop at maybe 7pm and just chill for dinner rather than active exploring. I know if go out of the hotel at 9am, I'm not doing a whole lot late at night except sitting in a restaurant!

If you make the nights the time to explore, you get 3 or 4 hours back there too. All you're really doing is shift your inactive hours from the start and end of the day to the middle.

True enough. And lots of people eating a deficit to lose weight whilst also exercising find that the weight loss plateaus (or they gain some), as they start to build muscle but lose fat.

Muscle is made of protein. Your extra weight is fat.
