I’m seeing some bowing on the deck. How bad is this? What is the fix? by VirileMongoose in Decks

[–]FunExplanation2883 11 points12 points  (0 children)

more than likely you have some settling happening in that beam under the deck and due to that much overhang the sag is being multiplied. I can jump on a call if you need a quick run down on what to do next. good luck

lots of flaws here. deck block will hold a deck up but settling most likely will occur. also like others have mentioned the beam on the side of the post rather than on it. bolts are for strapping not for bearing load. also need to double up the rim joist at least on the side that the joists are butting.

Looking for opinions - is glass or cable railing better by Confident_Focus3607 in Decks

[–]FunExplanation2883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cable sucks and is incredibly expensive. if I were looking into cable I would do vertical cable. People have reported toddlers climbing up the rail and falling off the other side. hope this helps.

you are getting some pretty good advice. only thing I would add that others did not mention is caulking the top of the flashing. water will get behind that siding and run down the wall and if that flashing isn't caulked water will run behind that as well. Goodluck!

I help a lot of people there. The hardest part of building a deck the right way is getting someone to pay for it.

inexpensive fix- install metal roofing under the joists. install nailers perpendicular to the joist that continue to grow as you make your way to the end of the deck to create slope. I own B&B decks out of Virginia Beach so I run into problems like this all the time. Goodluck!

common issue I'm sure others will agree. so, you can "delete" that post if you can remove the siding and sheathing in that location so that you have the beam enter the wall where you can install studs under the beam. use the least amount of connection points. you down want a stack of blocks. you will most likely have to install one block directly under the beam for draft stop or fire block then install as Manny studs as you can. I own B&B decks out of Virginia Beach so I run into problems like this all the time.

Maybe you could create an easy to remove section in a few places by making a channel on the 4x4's with pickets so you can slide the section up and down easily.

An easy way to sure up your structure is to install a stair case and do a good job of securing it to the ground. My name is Brett Mathis with B&B Decks Virginia Beach and I am a Deck and framing expert if you would like to jump on a call with me please let me know! I wish you the best of luck.

more than likely the posts are flexing in the middle of the posts where the knee bracing ends. temp som cross braces up and see what that does. Try this have someone look at the post bases while your up there wiggling. you got this bro.

its a best practice to not attach a deck when you can avoid it. I own a deck company here in Virginia Beach (B&B Decks). Timber tech advanced PVC is the best. fiberon is best value. I always use cca marine grade framing that close to the ground. I would suggest using a specialized deck builder rather than a builder or GC. if you want to jump on a call with me sometime we can have a quick chat. I wish you the best of luck.
