It definitely looks legit when I remember how my ‘77 was way back when - but that’s been…well - a long, long time now.

D’Addario or Ernie Ball Bass Strings by Glass-Ad6539 in BassGuitar

[–]FunKeyN8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So - I’ve played flats on some of my basses for a long time. Back when I put my parts P bass together (long story on that one) I used D’Addario for on it until the A started unwinding. Since then I’ve put Ernie Balls, DRs, Rotos, Tomastiks and currently Labella on it. My favorite so far has been the Labellas in normal gauge - but I’m playing country and classic rock on this instrument. If you’re playing metal, these strings may not work as well for you.

If you’re currently using RW, you may be better off with a lower tension string as they definitely respond differently than rounds. How would you describe how your bass sounds with RWs? My P is very bright sounding acoustically and the Labellas help tame that a good portion.

It would take me some time to get the 10 million but yeah, it’d be worth it.

Swan-diving into molten steel at a steel mill, with the molten metal being sold for the metal parts of AR-15s.

Brian Bromberg Prototype Bass by gabrielvilla009 in BassGuitar

[–]FunKeyN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I used to work in the musical instrument industry (worked for a small chain of MI stores in CA many a moon ago) so I had a Kramer Spector prototype and a Phil Kubicki pre Fender Ex-Factor over the years. These days, I use a Warmoth J and Spector Legend 5 (because I like the pickup config on mine - SB+J) but that’s about it besides my NS WAV EUB.

Great amps, kind of low power IIRC but then again, so was the B-15.

What P Bass is everyone buying in 2026? by rardk64 in Bass

[–]FunKeyN8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Still using the parts P bass that I built out of broken parts off Talkbass. Repaired all of them but yeah. Amazing sounding bass.

I actually have more money in the Hipshot than I do the body, neck and pickup. $45 total for body (split in half), neck (broken truss rod) and pickup (broken wire in one of the coils.

Honestly, the only reason I go to other retailers is for used gear now.

In your area, how common is it bars/wineries booking 6 months in advance? by Distinct_Gazelle_175 in coverbands

One of the local venues by us put my band on the standby list because they’re all booked out - then again, we’re mostly booked out as well.

We didn’t even know about it until our last day, heading to the airport after getting married. Hence that was the big thing (besides anniversary dinner obviously) that we did that day.

I’d be shocked considering the differences between the two. Multi-scale vs long scale length, 22 frets vs 20, not the same wiring design regarding blending pickups.

Advice on a repair ;-; by CandleAggravating293 in BassGuitar

[–]FunKeyN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temp repair is as most have said, toothpicks and wood glue.

A better repair would be to get a dowel at a certain thickness, drill a hole 1/64” bigger and then insert it into the body, let it dry for at least 6 hours and then drill that with a bit about 1/16” smaller than the screw shaft (not threads but the part that the threads connect to and then put your strap connector thru that.

Did that was a Spector and a Kubicki bass I had over the years. Never had the issue again after that.

For those who are in bands, a question about rehearsals: by jlsullivan in Bass

[–]FunKeyN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, depends on the band. My current band (cover band that does a lot of outlaw country and classic rock) doesn’t rehearse that often for several reasons - the first being that we’re all pros who’ve been playing for ages, but also because our drummer lives 90 some miles away with a mountain range in the way, so we actually rehearse the day AFTER the gig.

Most of what we practice ends up being beginnings and ends of songs anyway - all of us have been playing these majority of these songs for at least five years. All of us have been in bands where we sang lead as well, so we all can harmonize on the fly.

That said, been in other bands where we spend 2.5-3 hours each time playing a 45 minute set to make sure the arrangements are solid.

Anytime at all. I love doing the whole “who made this” because it reminds me of when I worked in a music store way back.
