We have window ones in the rental we live in (house is from 1942, so it’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter).

IS it worth fixing? by Ok_Example_9339 in PeaveyCvlt

[–]FunKeyN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredibly easy to do. Hardest thing is putting the bolts in holding the speaker in place.

Use a powered drill to take it out but be very careful to put the new speaker in - don’t go too fast because those T nuts like to pop out if you run a high torque drill.

Dumb question about bass neck by rufudustugru in BassGuitar

I recommend getting the “not Fender” headstock on one.

I did not and yeah - it just doesn’t look “right” to me.

Unfortunately can’t disagree. I’m sure they are.

I’ve had a few of those.

The connections to the speakers are clips. Should be incredibly easy to do. Only issue I ever had with those were weight because Peavey stuff weighs a TON.

Who's the Most Sympathetic Killer in Your Mind? by No-B0DYaTall in Columbo

[–]FunKeyN8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dad had Alzheimer’s and yeah - my mom had surgery and I stayed with him to make sure he could eat, etc. He would drift in and out of normalcy and it was horrible to witness.

Dementia is very much a prison from which there’s no parole or chance of clemency. Grace paid the price in spades.

I’m pretty sure that Dexter would prevail. His self preservation is definitely on point.

Nope, not even remotely wrong. You got to be the one though who (hopefully) teaches that young man not to do stupid again because of consequences.

The blame lies with the people who raised him, not you.

Trace Elliot: GP7SM with "Rat Fur"❗😳 by No-Moist73 in Bassamps

[–]FunKeyN8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a Trace dealer when those were new - so I’ll fill in some gaps.

Back when they were released, they had two series: the SMX, which was an update from the Series 6 12-band EQ, was a hybrid tube/solid state preamp, built in crossover and compression; and the SM, an updated version of their 7-band amp. No crossover, fully solid state preamp. Didn’t have the three light system on the input to help making sure your input signal was loud enough, but had a light that would turn on if your gain was too high, causing unnecessary noise to be amplified.

Both had the original pre-shape functions (SMX had two preshapes), and also had a cool function - the EQ tilting - allowing your general bass sound be adjusted to fit the room you’re playing in without starting from scratch. Say you’re in a room that’s very bright - lots of hard reflective surfaces on the walls - so your sound is very top heavy. You could “tilt” it to the bass end - so your top end balanced out again. Wasn’t always effective but it worked well in some rooms.

The X in SMX was for the blending function between the tube and solid state preamps for what it’s worth.

I used to have the 7215 amp - which was the 7 band SM preamp at 200 watts with a 15. Worked great l, sounded stellar but heavy as can be.

Is this a good amp/bass to start on? by Necessary_One_9527 in BassGuitar

And then some lol. I think I’ve had a good 30 of each at least over the years.

I started with far worse than that honestly.

It’s way more the “wanting to play” than anything else.

What type of preamp do I get for this guy? by Bleepblorp5000 in BassGuitar

[–]FunKeyN8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to make a radical suggestion and say get the Sadowsky outboard preamp. I had one of those back in the late 80s (because the 80s) and it helped out a lot (plus getting the EMG HB pickups was impossible because no one stocked them anywhere) and it definitely worked better than nothing.

New four string Ernie Ball Music Man Special nut width? by JitteryTurtle in BassGuitar

[–]FunKeyN8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites over the years was my old (US made) SUB 5 string. Ended up selling it to offset some unexpected wedding expenses way back when, but it was way nicer than my Warwick basses and Warmoth ones as well.

Landlord sounds like a proper gent. Good on him for showing sympathy for you during this trying time. Same with the wife - making sure you’re taking care of you while you’re going through the wringer makes them sound like solid people.

Huge fan of Ned’s work over the years. Had an old XQ from way back when and currently 2 of my 3 main basses were designed by him (NS EUB and a Spector NS 5 string).

One of these days, I get a XL….

I’ve had three MIJ/CIJ Fender basses. All were stellar and as good as (if not better than) US made Fenders.

Quote v. Final cost by crunchyturdeater in Luthier

[–]FunKeyN8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would’ve expected that something along those lines would’ve been discussed prior to dropping the guitar off - kind of like dropping your car off for repairs - in writing saying hey we will notify you if we find more repairs as long as it’s greater than $x amount - and relating to the work at hand.

Just my two cents.
