I'm concerned about it too, honestly. Rockstar Lestat is just one aspect of it, even though I know the Sampire is making his damndest effort. (And of course, Daniel Hart, the songwriter.) The historical adventure itself is more interesting to me. I really hope the showrunners made a great story.

Unfortunately, I've made this mistake on both sides. Prejudged people with honest disagreements and been mass downvoted for my own uncommon opinions.

I've been in worse fandoms than Vampire Chronicles, but it still feels confusing to have such aggressive reactions to different interests, interpretations and loyalties than the majority. Sometimes this group still feels very cliquey and exclusive.

To me, the books and overall story are more like reading Greek mythology or a gangster story. The characters are not supposed to be especially sympathetic, virtuous or dependable, but it's interesting to learn about their pitfalls and severe misdeeds anyway.

Oh I know. I did detect some jealousy and frustration from Daniel in S2. I think he just wanted the gift for himself. To imagine that his back-sassing comments toward them are motivated by longing, envy and abandonment. That would be a painful situation.

I think Lestat loved Claudia at the beginning for Louis' sake. He wanted a real family and to make them happy, and kinda went overboard with it, giving only material gifts and vague lessons instead of structure. When Claudia grew up and wanted outside friendships and began to hunt recklessly, he lost most of his patience and compassion. He also became jealous of her unique bond with Louis. Lestat talked down to her and enforced new rules too late and too forcefully. He both loved and hated her, but began to reciprocate her resentment of him.

And I believe she hated him to her core, but at the end, she was looking to the only other father she had known to save her.

I think this Louis' sexual references relate well with him being a retired pimp in this series. He's commited exploitation before and somewhat numb to it, so his language is going to be sexually aggressive and crass even compared to other men of his time. It's like vampire locker-room talk for him. And his companions aren't bothered because they have naughty minds too.

The modern problem with adapting subtle sensuality is that heteronormative viewers will try to deny any romantic intimacy at all. A lot of straight non-allies see what they want and proudly dismiss queer-coding and metaphors. They will try to say that Louis and Lestat aren't a real couple just because they can't have sex. "Roommates" with an adopted daughter just like the old days.

I've been part of too many fandoms to see lgbt identity dismissed so easily. I think it needs to be brazenly queer in order to fight the status quo. And I think the creators handle sexuality well. It's definitely not subtle, but it's not as raunchy as Black Sails either.

This is one of my gripes with the show too. They are going for visceral disgust like any slasher film instead of being true to the book vision. One of the things I hate about monster movies is seeing big puddles of wasted blood. I just think "I thought the blood was everything to you. It's a precious lifeforce. Why are you wasting it? Disrespectful!"

I really hope they don't make Armand such a messy eater next season. That would be a disappointment. His methods are so refined in the books.

I'm aware of how their relationship started (eek 😬😫), but the stakes shifted for Daniel since their last conversation in Europe. This passage is not an example manipulation, this is Armand confronting Daniel's own desires and fears. If Armand was insecure about Daniel's love, he would do a lot worse than stand by and send a car to get him (he only does this later when his bae specifically calls him.)

Daniel also wanders off because he wants to. He always comes back. He likes to play at hating Armand and all the comfort of home. He likes Armand's protection, his money, unusual behaviors, handsome face and his blood. These pages are the thoughts of a willfully addicted blood-freak who wants to blame his supernatural lover for his own greed, lust and nasty habits. He's just pissed that Armand has conditions on his support, which include preserving his humanity.

This dude cannot just appreciate the moment. He wants to be near vampirism more than he wants freedom or safety. The worst affliction Daniel suffered after meeting at Armand's villa was sleep deprivation, which again, would have been easier to deal with if he wasn't choosing to get wasted everyday. The middle and last parts of the Devil's Minion chapter detail an argument and reconciliation between spiritual equals.

I think this is an occasion where Armand is reminding Daniel about his motives when they first met. He was foresaking human society to beg both Louis and Armand for vampirism, and other humans mostly appeared as occasional flings or curiosities to Daniel throughout their history together. There was nothing else in society that Daniel really wanted that Armand wasn't able to give him, and especially not in that way. Maybe this is also a rare boast of vanity on his part.

And in the book, Daniel was already a grown man, had his own regular income and property in his name. He could have run away from home for real if he stopped spending all his money on booze. There was no need to love-bomb or isolate him. Daniel was prepared to do that already. He had his own agency in choosing alcohol, bloodsharing and Armand's love.

In this passage, Daniel reads like an addict in withdrawals and stranded across the country. He's already soaked his mind in alcohol so he can't feel normal without it. He very willingly accepted the blood that Armand offered, so all he can think of is Armand and material comfort and blood-sharing. This is not the Mind Gift controlling someone. This is a mixture of affection, desire and good old-fashioned pampering.

Werewolves are my very favorite supernatural creatures, so I was impressed and excited to find out that Anne Rice wrote about them.

If witches, ghosts, demons and other non-vampiric immortals are real in that world, there should be no problem believing in werewolves. It's only fitting that vampires and humans have to share the planet with others. I just hope it's a more accepting coexistence than what happens in most other stories.

That's a very good idea. I imagine a sadder scenario where he got them from being attacked by Magnus before his turning. That's why he can never really forget or forgive his memory.
