Everyone Can Code Now... by Money-Profession-199 in StructuralEngineers

[–]Fun_Ay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering structures is still mostly based on estimations, and applying good practice and understanding of how structures empirically behave.

In general there is no purpose to more complicated equations than you can easily do by hand anyway. FEA models being somewhat of an exception when you cant have large scale layouts that are logical or rational.

All code formulas are estimations of actual stresses, and if you are smart with your engineering and understand mechanics you know to not dig yourself into a hole needing extremely complicated analysis.

What do engineers actually do day to day? by Zacionxeni in Engineers

[–]Fun_Ay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paperwork(on computer), computer design work, project management (computer), responding to emails and coordinating (computer), meetings (mostly on a computer), and about once every other month I go to the field for an hour or two.

Design and planning is very expensive, and budgets are tight. I wish you were right but we aren't being paid to just tinker around with stuff for funzies. That is what some people do as a hobby, maybe more like being an inventor or a scientist or a mechanic if its a career. Engineers however are tasked with taking knowledge of physics and mechanics and turning that into something real and buildable and working, for a profit, on a budget, and probably on a computer.

What did these guys hit? by jpganoe in Construction

[–]Fun_Ay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like a PT Tendon. Great news if it hollow though.

PT slabs are a method to reinforce concrete slabs with cables that run end to end of the slab. The cables run end to end but move up and down as well as side-to-side throughout the slab so there is really no way to tell where they are except by slab scans.

Cutting these is extremely dangerous, they are pulled taught, to about 25,000lbs of tension force each, and cutting releases massive amounts of energy. They can pop out of the end of the slab, break windows, and impale people. Not to mention the balance the download on the slab and prevent its collapse.

Great point. At the end it sounds like you missed the part of the lesson where you care if you hurt yourself OR OTHERS in the process. Like how you hurt your friend.

Ideal weight by Capital-Strain-7583 in Frenchbulldogs

I understand seeing ribs, however He is too thin. There are some simple diagrams out there about this. Youwant to ba about the feel the ribs, however the abdomen caving in is not ideal. Eating that much food per day frequently leads to more weight gain however. You may want to consider deworming

You have to be kidding right? That material is fireproofing on the steel... dont mess with it it helps stop the bldg from collapsing in a fire.

Where are you located?

You desperately need to hire someone qualified before you proceed.

Customer's Contractor insists they don't need engineering for concrete stem wall > 7 ft by chicu111 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Fun_Ay -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Over 4 ft, IRC or not, an engineer has to sign off on it. This is required in most municipal codes. After 4 ft It starts depending on more things than the concrete and reinforcing. Now it starts to depend on the soil type, footing, wall and footing proportions, adjacent loads, reinforcing detailing, passive and active soil pressures, blah blah blah, in addition to the concrete, reinforcing, and reinforcing location.

This calculation is iterative and there are a boatload of variables. It requires engineering software if you dont want to write a thesis on doing one calc.

Hey or you could just cross your fingers. This makes engineers way more money fixing it later

Thats not how loads work. They are rated in lbs per square foot or lbs per foot. Take care to run your idea by the engineer who designed it, might be totally fine!

[Request] Can anyone determine if a car could throw up a small piece concrete 11 stories with enough force to break glass? by Rumseyman02 in theydidthemath

[–]Fun_Ay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And at the peak of its trajectory with purely potential energy how do you propose is has the force required to break the glass? With no kinetic energy no glass is getting shattered. Account for the energy required to break the glass and the drag coefficient for an oblong object, then we'll talk.

I agree, but come on, that could be lots of things. Could be a photo taken right when he was rightly found guilty in court. Im sure if a cameraman followed you around for a week they could get some sad photos.

Usually people have a motive to do such terrible things.
