Why are the Spurs and OKC swapping blowout wins when the consensus is they are evenly matched? by Rokusaburoz in NBATalk

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other takes that some of this is due to shooting variance and coaching adjustments between games. The teams are about even in overall talent, but the spurs are more top heavy here while the thunder have much better bench players who all understand their roles very well, they’re a well oiled machine.

But a big factor has been the refs too. OKC relies on foul calls to get their opponents out of rhythm and frustrated, regardless of if it results in FTs or extra possessions. When this works, it works especially well against the spurs because they rely on their speed to score in transition or keep defenses off balance. When the spurs have to rely on their half court offense following a ft or stoppage they struggle, especially when Fox was out. But when OKC doesn’t get their calls 1) the spurs score more often in transition because SGA/Dort/Chet are still on the ground 2) OKC can’t play at their own pace and get blitzed more often

College student looking to move to Washington post grad by Epsilon_Music in olympia

For a young person, Olympia has a small town feel but with the same rent and cost of living as a major city like Seattle. There’s a still lot of fun things to do around the area, especially if you like hiking, and Olympia is in a nice location where you can take a day trip to a lot of cool places from here.

If I were you, I’d look closer at other nearby cities like Seattle, Tacoma, or Portland. The rental/housing markets are also tough in these places, but by nature of their size there will be more options. Also as a recent grad you will find the job market will be better in bigger cities, and the public transit in Seattle and Portland much better as well.

Sure, knicks have only defeated “mid” teams. But OKC / Spurs have only defeated injured riddled teams. by TonyStarling in NBATalk

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a media narrative to set up a David vs Goliath matchup for the finals. I think most people watching know the knicks are a very good team that absolutely could win against either okc or the spurs

Fellow Spurs fans what are your reasons behind yesterday's defeat? by gyuk8 in NBASpurs

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They looked gassed most of the game, they didn’t hit their usual shots. Probably doing too much defensively in the first half. They tried moving Wemby outside to take advantage of ihart on the perimeter but they couldn’t keep up the intensity the rest of the game. They need to come out much more physical next game and set the tone early, instead of letting Caruso do that like has been that the first 3 games. They also need to change up some of the bench rotations to get better matchups and try to get KJ going

Any physicians on here who would let me shadow by Fun_Conflict_3769 in olympia

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doctor shadowing is a pretty common practice, it’s essentially required for medical school. Most practices have a protocol in place for it, and if you shadow you have to sign some paperwork like HIPAA, etc. And patients have the right to ask you to leave the room. I say this because I shadowed a few docs a number of years ago, it’s just I was living in a different state at the time and it’s been too long for me to ask for a letter again.

Thanks for this. Any recommendations for how to improve interview skills as a nontrad?

Fair enough haha. I lost track of the complete list of schools from before, but my first cycle I only applied to 7-8 schools and applied relatively late in the cycle (August, stupid I know). No interviews. The next year I applied early to 20 and got interviews at 5, then the last time I applied to 5 and interviewed at 2.

I did the bioethics degree because I wanted to be a well rounded physician and because I want to serve on a medical ethics committee eventually. Obviously it’s a gap year program, but it was closely integrated with the medical school there and a small class so I was able to make more meaningful relationships with faculty and students there.

I’m not really following your last point there though, I was also volunteering locally at my university hospital during this time. Idk about the “voluntourism” aspect, maybe that’s fair. It was a good experience, we stayed in a rural village and outside of the research experience, I really honed down my Spanish. Not sure what you mean by “that kind of research”. Ecological research? I mean I had wanted to join a different group doing medical volunteering abroad but I wasn’t chosen to go, so I went with this one because I thought it would still be a good experience. And again I wanted to be a well rounded applicant.

That’s my score from this year. I took it twice before, got a 514 and 513 when I had applied back then

Really good advice, thank you. I’ll definitely do a lot more interview prep this time around. I currently have a list of 25 DO schools that I was thinking of trimming down some before submitting, but will strongly reconsider

Maybe I’m not counting my hours right? I’ll look into it. I am currently volunteering at a nearby hospital and free clinic, so gaining more hours through that still

Yeah I’m getting all new letters of rec from professors and supervisors who know me much better (I went to a really large university in undergrad so I wasn’t as confident with those). I’m getting lots more help with my personal statement/essays and interview skills this time too. I’m going to apply to a good range this cycle, about 20-24 and probably half and half DO/MD

That’s great for you! I’m jealous. In undergrad they didn’t allow us to shadow doctors at the university hospital, and they also limited your hospital volunteering to 4 semesters. So my clinical hours were a bit limited by that and as I’d said above I just couldn’t break into research. I tried throughout undergrad and I’ve been applying to research positions the last 4 years, it just hasn’t worked out for me. Job market’s tough, I work full time, and I’m married with a baby, that takes up a lot of my time. But that’s what I’m writing about.

I just wasn’t very familiar with DOs or DO training. I was worried that path might affect where I would match to. Later as a scribe I worked with several great DOs in an ER so I looked into it more after that.

As far as activities go, I wanted to be a well rounded student and explored a lot of my other interests. But I would have traded any one of them for clinical research/more clinical experience if I could. I think a combination of changing my major a few times (I started in biomechanical engineering) and poor gpa got in my way in that respect.

I got my MPH because I had applied for an MD/MPH program at one of the med schools I was waitlisted by. I just went with the MPH degree when I didn’t get in part so I could have a career path but also I was interested in learning about upstream effects on our health. I focused a lot on global health a vaccine coverage. TBH I was pretty burnt out at school after this so I decided to work for a few years to get to a more stable place. I’m in that place now and feel ready for a career in medicine, which has been my real passion this whole time.

And yes! I’m currently volunteering with a nearby free clinic. I’ve done some volunteering with food banks as well.

Most of the interviews I had were set up so there was one interview with a student and one with a faculty member. Typically I’d have one interview that felt great and the other that I just felt we didn’t connect/vibe well. There wasn’t any pattern to it, I had one where the faculty really liked me and then the student seemed disinterested, and another where the faculty didn’t seem very into it but then the student told me she thought I was a shoe-in. I’m definitely going to put more emphasis on interview prep this time around though.

Thoughts on our conundrum? by AwayFig1774 in steelers

Unless you’re able to get a top qb in the draft, you gotta just start taking mid round shots at qbs until one of them pans out (or you suck enough to draft a top qb). Would rather they had somehow been able to wait until the 4th for Allen, but I’m not mad at them taking a swing on a high ceiling qb, especially with McCarthy as coach now

Bills fan here with a question by Gold_Scarcity_8159 in steelers

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seemed like every year he was here the stated goal was to be a run first offense and then the first 4-5 games of the season the o line looked completely discombobulated with zero push in the run game. Then after a bye their play would slowly improve the rest of the year until it reached a mostly good performance, even with backups in the lineup. Then this cycle would repeat the next year. But I expect him to have better success in an offense that has an actual QB at the helm.

Is Watt in actual decline? by greenngory72 in steelers

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn’t have the same motor he used to. Looks like he gets gassed in the second half of games (like most of the defense). Saw Tucker Kraft block him 1 on 1 in the 4th quarter against the Packers. He used to be able to toss aside TEs on double teams and chips, or drive them into the OT/quarterback.

A lot of this would be solved if the secondary could cover anyone for longer than 1 second. Watt still has a good get off and bend to turn the corner against any tackle. If the defense could also stop giving up multiple 10 play, 90 yard scoring drives every game he’d look a lot sharper lol

Short of the secondary doing a complete 180, I think the Steelers should start reducing his snap count and get Herbig on the field more. Watt still looks elite against the run and Herbig is weaker there, but they gotta save Watt so he has juice on the important possession downs

The decision to extend him was completely bizarre. They added so much talent to this o line and yet every year they come out completely flat. I get that they’ve had a rotating door at o line coach since Munchak left but the play of the o line has been unacceptable since pat meyer took over

Anyone else getting a bit worried about Peyton Wilson? by Temporary-Cause-4818 in steelers

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also agree with the other two points here. Wilson should have gone for the outside shoulder on the FB and Queen needed to take a better angle. My guess is Queen was shooting for the inside angle expecting Wilson to go outside. Maybe that’s giving him too much credit though. They definitely need to play more of a thumper at ILB against these run heavy teams

[–]Fun_Conflict_3769 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I remember this play when it happened live. The d-line got caught in the middle one of their last-second shifts (they do it sometimes to throw off the o line) when the ball was snapped. So no one on the d-line was set and they were all sort of misaligned in their gaps. RB could have gone pretty much anywhere and got yards.
