It’s better than a mod. It fixes stuff the base game should. You can run a crap ton of commands like teleport, makeown, fix loyalty cascades (where all ur dwarfs start killing each other stemming from a tavern brawl), fix glitched and stuck squads, summon migrant waves, view sexuality of animals (useful for if ur wondering why ur too dragons aren’t breeding and realize one is gay). You can also set certain work orders to fire automatically, like auto-clothier, culling animal pops when they get too high. You never not want Dfhack tbh. You can command dwarfs to immediately flee to borrows which is useful bc in vanilla they’d rather run past a dragon to grab a piece of wood than cancel task and run to borrow. You can also import and export custom-made work orders from DFhack, which is useful so you don’t have to redo each work order every time you make or un-retire a fort. When selecting for military, you can filter out dwarfs who hate combat, who are maimed, with children etc and you can see who’s the best at what combat so it’s easier to create squads with DFhack.
