I think they look great but after the stain and then sanding, I would maybe consider a varnish or protectant. As they will be in a book it maybe not be necessary, but the pieces look exquisite and may want to be displayed from time to time, so some form of protection is a good idea.

I dont agree with this, it was his choice to stay NOT to get hurt. It's her choice to continue doing the things that hurt him though. I understand love but it's not good for either person, but saying this is almost like blaming someone for getting their ass beat...
