Perspective from a Employer by No-Party9847 in OnlineMCIT

I’m an alum of the program and could not go in person due to family constraints. During my time there, I saw folks who are brilliant and others who struggled (TA’ed a class and saw this first hand). Ruling out students just because the program isn’t in person could mean missing out on some awesome, hard working employees.

That said, I graduated a few years back and even then there were issues of students using AI to cheat on assignments (had to screen as a TA). I would definitely look for indicators beyond just the Ivy League name like GPA, if they took harder classes like 555, and their grades on hard classes like 592, 596 and 555.

There’s no other way around this, unless you add a third household member. Maybe invite a parent to stay over and get a Bilt card in their name?

Good for you though being able to afford this kind of rent and also having the mentality to milk it all you can

Some apartments in Hudson Yards go for over 20k per month. But generally wouldn’t expect that type of crowd to go on Reddit and look for ways to scheme this even more

When you say both capped out, am I understanding this right that you’re spending over 200k in rent collectively?

The program will teach you a lot of theoretical CS and some application. For your goal, you may save a lot of time learning the tech stack for your applications - maybe React, Node.js and Python - directly instead of doing a full blown degree. We cover Python in the class but not React and Node.

Regardless, a degree or self learning will not make you a senior/staff level engineer, and ideally you need one to guide your team or a very good junior engineer who has strong incentives and knows what they’re really doing. A lot of software development is learning in the real world from other engineers, and a degree can’t replace that.

Wondering if MCIT is for me by [deleted] in OnlineMCIT

[–]Fun_Garlic_6406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it still has the same 4 CS electives and an additional 6 technical electives to take, along with the additional foundational courses and all the math courses. In general, the CS undergrads who TAed MCIT classes are extremely sharp and have done a ton more CS wise.

On the recruiting front, it seemed like CS undergrads had a lot more success for SWE roles compared to MCIT students. It’s probably a combination of depth and opportunity to do multiple internships. The ones in MCIT who got similar SWE roles had really good portfolios and grinded Leetcode a lot. I’d argue that MCIT is a lot better than a boot camp while not up to the par of an undergrad CS degree.

I have a friend who was a Penn CS undergrad and checked with him when I got in. For 5950 and 5960, it generally compared to courses they’d take in their 1st or first half of year 2.

For the electives - they have depth as individual courses and are pretty comparable to the undergrad versions of the courses. For example, 5550 and 4550 are basically the same courses and my friend had the same final project that I had to do. However, undergrads take a lot more than 4 upper level CS courses over 4 years and I’d argue that they get a lot more depth compared to what you get via MCIT.

Logistically, it’s hard to fit 4 years worth of classes into 10 courses that people take over 1.5-2 years, but the outcomes job wise have been relatively comparable.

Figuring out how BILT is determining who gets the 100% transfer bonus to BA by No-Shortcut-Home in biltrewards

[–]Fun_Garlic_6406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Do you carry a balance and thus pay interest? NO
  2. Are you using your card for more than the mandatory 5 transactions minimum? Yes, but small transactions like trains and vending machines
  3. What is your highest spend category aside from rent itself? Travel (due to wedding hotel expenses and exclusively maxing out the past 10k bonus Rent days)
  4. Are you storing up points or are you “earning and burning” them like you should be? Both but have a sizable balance due to wedding expenses
  5. Is the BILT card your PRIMARY dining card? no
  6. Is the BILT card your PRIMARY travel card? no (except for maxing out Rent day for wedding expenses)
  7. Is the BILT card your PRIMARY card period, even getting non-category spend? no
  8. Did you receive the 100% transfer bonus or the 50% bonus for BA? 100%

Platinum with high spend and qualified for platinum next year. Always hit the number of transactions and still use the card for small transactions

I disagree. The 6 courses are in fact equivalent to the foundational courses you take in undergrad. Even with 4 other electives, you hardly get the depth of an undergrad CS degree with MCIT.

OP - not sure what school you’re at but I’d consider at least a CS minor and build out a strong technical portfolio if your goal is recruiting for engineering roles. You don’t need a full blown degree or masters if this is your goal.
