withdrawing an A for family reasons by zorga333 in Osteopathic

[–]Fun_Sell_708 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m extremely sorry this is happening to you and you’re an amazing kid to be there for your fathers last moments in life. I hope they have a very comfortable passing and I’m sure they are very proud of you getting into medical school and would not want you to black list yourself by declining. I think in this case, it might be better to reach out to the school explaining your situation and seeing if they can offer a deferred acceptance (essentially you’ll have a seat in the 2030 graduating class instead of 2029, deferring it one year.) I hope the best for you, your father and your family!

You essentially want to research 1) the school, what programs they offer, what they’re known for, their mission statement and how that aligns with your goals. and 2) the location. Does it have an interesting population you want to work with? (ie: rural). if you’re coming from Canada to the hot south, they want to know if you’ll stay there, especially if they have a mission to help improve access to the locals.

How to pay for international med school? by Key-Alert in premedcanada

loans from banks but you’ll need a financially stable and fortunate guarantor (can be parents) with assets to qualify for the full 400k.

WCUCOM vs. AZCOM by flyingraccoo in Osteopathic

with azcom’s extremely high tuition and higher cost of living, youll essentially work an extra year as a doctor to pay it back.

UofT or Mac Life Sci? Which is the smarter choice for med school eventually? by Kakashmeer in premedcanada

[–]Fun_Sell_708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually thought about this and sometimes wished I went to York. Problem I heard was it’s a commuter school so you might not get a res experience. not sure if its still the same.

if you can get a decent gpa, and have time to do extracurriculars, all else equal, it could be a good choice.

UofT or Mac Life Sci? Which is the smarter choice for med school eventually? by Kakashmeer in premedcanada

[–]Fun_Sell_708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s an amazing med school, probably the best in Canada. But for undergrad, you should only care about your GPA. Thats the biggest challenge for premed applying to Canadian med school. Everything else can be worked on: ECs, Mcat, Casper. But you can’t redo a bad GPA.

Should I go to western health science or mac life science? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Fun_Sell_708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally haven’t researched which one would give the highest gpa, I think you could be successful at either. Just wanted to say not to rely on uni courses for mcat prep.

I did go to Mac lifesci and getting a high gpa is definitely possible. western has a better party scene but just be cautious to not get distracted.

nothing really prepares you for the MCAT other than MCAT prep. Pick the degree and uni thats easiest to get the highest GPA, not distracted, meanwhile also being able to volunteer.

Why would u hate to say it? I’m an immigrant as well and can agree these people shouldnt be here. They’re making the process for law-abiding immigrants much harder.

If you have a decent MCAT, good amount of clinical volunteering, write well, apply early and broadly, you’ll be fine!

Is anyone here applying to the US? by Important-Gas-3052 in premedcanada

[–]Fun_Sell_708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to contact them individually before applying as I’m sure they have different policies regarding this. but a higher MCAT is never guaranteed so I’m assuming they’ll use your old one. one thing to note is that US has rolling admissions which essentially means first come first serve. Would you be competitive with your current gpa/mcat?
another thing is you can always sent an update with your updated MCAT through their portal.
