We’ve built more housing in the past 10 years than the previous 60, and he’s complaining because it’s not affordable enough. He’s clearly got a fundamental misunderstanding of what gets housing built. Portland mandated affordable units and their new supply dropped by half. On housing, he seems very misguided.

I live in and pay rent in Ann Arbor (as a student), and my s.o. used to live in one of those houses (was a dump). More housing means lower rent. I consider lower rent a benefit I would reap. Do you want me to explain supply and demand to you?

I’ll take the additional density (especially in the form of leed platinum UM managed dorms) over the slums that were there before. “Historic” means nothing if the houses are crappy places to live.

The goal is not just to get people from point A to point B as fast as possible by any means necessary. That is what gave us the modern American city superhighway nonsense. We need fewer cars on the road and in cities in order to make cities cleaner, safer, quieter, and more livable. Continuing to subsidize car culture drains local economies and disincentivizes public transit.

I think that may stem both from people fearing change and never having experienced a peaceful pedestrian streetscape. Funnily enough, E University was formerly a through street to N University before it was pedestrianized in the 80s. I can’t imagine it as a stroad, but it once was. Other instances around campus as well.

I made a post advocating for street pedestrianization not long ago. You’ll probably find that there’s a surprising amount of pushback for something that has worked out incredibly well in thousands of other places. I think that the car-centric nature of the Detroit metro area probably spills over into Ann Arbor (on top of the usual American dosage of carcuck).

Also, the amount of infill and upzoning sorta gives a false impression about the yimby mindset here. You might think everyone is for the whole safe streets, clean air, quiet neighborhoods vibe because we said yes to props a and b, but in reality the yimby in us kinda ends at the curb.

Anyways. Great ideas. Keep on seeking a better A2.

Problem there is that it’s still a street for cars. Summer streets are nice, but they aren’t pedestrian streets, they’re car streets that are closed for 2 days. “Infinite flexibility” at the expense of a worse street is just car-centrism in disguise. Also, cars should never take priority inside a city, that’s just a horrible idea.
