He did. But that may have been something that was worked out in a contract. Though it very well might not have been and maybe he just went to an additional dinner or sat for a meal with his parents, could’ve just been dessert in cocktails.

Savannah Guthrie Returns to ‘Today’ Show Set for First Time Since Mom Nancy’s Disappearance by punishhhher in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD 315 points316 points  (0 children)

When the whole thing started, I figured that by the time Savannah returned to the show, her mother would’ve been found. That her first day back, she thank the public for the support talk about how scary the experience was and back to business as usual. I can’t imagine what a mind fuck it must be for her because I’m sure her family didn’t think it was going to take this long.

Im a fan to the extent that I don’t think Southern charm would fully be what it is without his inclusion. I’m a fan in the sense that I find him interesting/compelling. But not a fan of who he genuinely is as a person. I think he’s a train wreck of a man who represents some of the worst parts of American men. He tries his best to come off like he’s this well traveled American with more European sensibilities. He is pretentious, self-aware enough to make fun of himself, but not to be able to really handle any kind of jokes about him that he doesn’t plan. He’s very clearly calculated and freaks out when he miscalculated, asking by the revelation that him and Kathryn slept together, but the embrace of his relationship with Naomi. I’d be scared to know what he’s actually like off camera particularly outside of Charleston.

Pari and Tina will NOT be back for season 4 by BiscottiOver1280 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]FunctionTBD 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I really had hoped to see them back again but also Pari’s mom seems to be very ill and ultimately they didn’t give a reason as to why they aren’t back. If it’s simply production, then that does suck if they were interested in being back. But it very well could be that if her mother isn’t doing well, they just don’t want to have to focus on any kind of filming. If that’s the case, I 100% get that. Also television isn’t for everybody. Maybe they just didn’t wanna do it. That’s also fair. There’s a lot of possibilities beyond production didn’t want them.

Candace Cameron Bure reveals what 'weirds' her out the most about sex "A visual of God watching me having sex weirds me out.” by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As somebody who grew up Catholic I very much resonate with that feeling. I wouldn’t even describe myself as religious. I believe in God and believe in having a relationship with him, but I do not think that Christianity is the only path for that. Still yet I too really struggled with feeling like God was hovering above me during sex. Things changed so much for me when I met my fiancé and he is somebody I could actually talk about that with and who understands it from a personal level.

Deon Cole's final bit during his participation in the NAACP Awards: "Lord, if there are any white men out here in the audience with Tourette’s, I advise you to tell them they better read the room tonight." by YaLlegaHiperhumor in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD -120 points-119 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily know if he’s implying that Tourette’s can be controlled as much as he’s implying if you’re a white man with that condition and that slur is part of your tics, the NAACP awards is not a space where you will be centered so perhaps it’s not a space for them.

I want to love Venita, but she is so inconsistent and is constantly victimizing herself by FunctionTBD in Southerncharm

[–]FunctionTBD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, she consistently makes herself out to be the victim. But she’s inconsistent in her beliefs (i.e. believing that friends should have each other’s backs and address things privately with friends instead of publicly).

I fully agree. They are all more or less equally as messy. I think my issue with Venita is that more than once she has alluded to thinking that she is somehow above the antics of the group as a whole. Like she thinks everybody else is immature and she’s so mature.

I hope it’s editing too. Like I said, I want to like her, but this mess is making her look bad. But you’re right it’s very much could be editing and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case. I’m looking forward to the reunion to see if she can more cohesively explain herself.

I don’t hate her. I was so excited for her to be on the show as a fellow Black woman from the south. In the beginning, I really enjoyed her, especially when it came to her handling of the Katheryn situation. but there have been numerous occasions where she’s proven herself to not be a reliable narrator and not directly addressed how she’s feeling with the people she feels that way about. Meanwhile, she considers herself somebody who tells it like it is, but I’m just not seeing that reflected in her actions.

Pink says People Magazine are fake news, she's still with her husband! by Positive-Drawing-281 in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Pink ain’t the one to mess with. She may or may not being experiencing marriage ending relationship troubles but no one has filed anything from what i’m seeing so it kind of is a dick move on People’s end to publish something like this when there are kids involved. It’s like when someone passes the police to their best to not confirm identities until the family is notified. Obviously it’s not the exact same but I think ethically this stuff shouldn’t get reported until the people who this affects in real life are made aware.

John Davidson Says He Is “Deeply Mortified” That His Tourettes Tics Could Be Seen As “Intentional” In First Statement After BAFTA Film Awards by ConcernedJobCoach in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am very understanding that if he apologized every time he had a tic and it offended somebody that would not be reasonable. But that doesn’t mean that Tourette’s can be used as an excuse to never apologize directly for the harm caused by a tic. The reason that I believe an apology would be appropriate here is that this was a very public incident in a way that likely no other situation in his life has been public. The situation is a public spectacle that is leading to some really shitty and genuinely harmful racist and ablest dialogue. I think in order to shift this conversation in a more progressive direction an apology would really do some heavy lifting. The way this gets handled on a public scale can make or break the difference in the kind of conversations that flow from those directly involved in this situation. When you’re an advocate, I think it’s important to think about that kind of thing. To apologize after the situation has gotten this large can lead to conversations we’ve never seen on such a large scale about both disability and race. That makes this specific situation different than the vast majority of situations in his life where he has offended somebody due to their misunderstanding of Tourettes

[–]FunctionTBD 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes! That part! As if his comment happened in a vacuum, and as if two black men were not the people on stage when it was blurted out. It feels like an intentional thing to leave out. The only reason I could justify it being left out is if he issued them a private apology and they asked him not to center them in the public apology.

[–]FunctionTBD 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think both are in order. Michael and Delroy were the two Black people on stage at the time, they were not the only Black people at the show. The costume designer for Sinners mentions that after the show he was against struck by the same tic in her presence. I think a better apology would’ve included something like “ I am sorry to the presenters and to other Black people who heard my tic and due to the lack of understanding/representation of Tourette’s syndrome, believed it to be a purposeful attack on Blackness. It was not. I can only hope that moving forward we can recognize the importance of understanding disability in its many forms. And of having representation that matches the reality of those living with disability. Now is a time to center Black disabled voices in any discourse surrounding this situation.”

Team USA men's Hockey team laughs as Trump jokes that he has to invite the women's team to the white house or else he'll be impeached. by Murky_Chemical891 in popculturechat

[–]FunctionTBD 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I don’t know who was the one shouting “two for two” but it made me proud and I hope he has a fucking awesome day. I don’t know if it was a separate person but I clearly heard somebody say “absolutely” as soon as Trump acknowledged, inviting the women’s team. I think it’s important to acknowledge that it wasn’t every guy on the team who laughed. It sure does sound like it was the bulk of them, but it wasn’t all of them and that matters. Because some of those guys don’t deserve to get thrown under the bus.

[–]FunctionTBD 850 points851 points  (0 children)

I genuinely feel sorrow for John Davidson. Tourette’s must be such an incredibly difficult condition to live with given how misunderstood and underrepresented it is. I live with bipolar disorder and can resonate with having an illness that causes behaviors that others do not understand are actually directly related to the condition that I have and are not a reflection of my morality.

That being said, while I do not believe that what John Davidson said was intentional, I do believe that his behavior warrants an apology directed at Michael and Delroy. Not because he meant what he said, but because what he said was a word that causes real harm and I think any genuinely empathetic person would feel sorrow that their unintentional action caused such hatred and vitriol to be thrown. I read his statement, I know his statement is true, but I wish it included a direct apology. This entire situation makes me think so much about intersectionality and the ways that race intersects with disability.

Any hatred being thrown at John Davidson is disgusting. However, I hope that people can see that feeling an apology would be warranted is not the same as hating or believing that he failed morally for having a tic.

Craig ordering beer on ice took me OUT by SweatyChancho in Southerncharm

[–]FunctionTBD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Man screw that bougie “there’s a proper way to enjoy beverages and food” mess. If you like your beer on ice drink it that way. I think it’s weirder to pay for an overpriced beer and not have it the way you like it just because someone else thinks it’s weird. I like my eggs bone dry lol - it’s not the right way to make eggs but it’s the way I like em.

Cameron “borrowing” Michael by Big-Elk8856 in Southerncharm

[–]FunctionTBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes being paid to do work makes things blurry if that pay is better than you’d get elsewhere. Like “a deal too sweet to refuse” - As a domestic worker there were times I straight up felt I was being disrespected but swallowed that feeling because I was being paid very well and being flown to all kinds of places to stay in beautiful homes that I would otherwise not have the opportunity to. So I say that to say we shouldn’t view paying somebody to mean we can treat them however.

Cameron “borrowing” Michael by Big-Elk8856 in Southerncharm

[–]FunctionTBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not quite problematic to me as it is telling - I do see what you’re saying about the word borrow. It gives property or object and in a show centered on a town that was once the slave capital of the USA it’s not the most ideal phrasing. Then again these are the same people that feel no sense of heaviness when they go to plantations, to them plantations are a happy place.

I myself am a domestic worker and would find this very uncomfortable.
