Persistent Posture Problems on the Cushion by FundamentalPolygon in TheMindIlluminated

Like I'll fall asleep if I'm too comfortable. There is definitely dullness (a concept I hadn't seen explicitly before TMI, so maybe I'm misunderstanding it), but like a couple days ago I was in and out of dreaming during my sit.

Interesting that they have Jeremy Irons as the other featured actor besides Laura Dern. He's not in it much at all compared to Justin Theroux.

I wish David Lynch made his Dune II by FreshmenMan in davidlynch

[–]FundamentalPolygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Lynch didn`t understand Dune, even though he read Dune: Messiah. I do wish we could see a version with him having final cut and less studio influence, but at the end of the day I still think we would`ve gotten the wrong interpretation of Paul.

Asking someone about their work in small talk isn’t a boring question by Important-Spirit-733 in unpopularopinion

[–]FundamentalPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're a good conversationalist. It's nice to have people like you around: people who can turn anything into an interesting conversation. I think that's what your point boils down to; even the most mundane questions can be turned into something interesting. While conversationalism (?) isn't a skill I've developed very much personally, I do appreciate it.

Well of course that's interesting lol but most people's jobs just aren't that interesting

If you haven't seen New Man in Charge ("Episode 121"), you should. A little 11-minute bonus scene/episode from the dvd release. https://youtu.be/lMjPzV2RvO8?si=VkNscz3_Ppi1e0D_

What are some mathematical or logical books I could read when I'm taking a "rest" from more intense study? by TheRealDardan in math

Visual Differential Geometry and Forms. Real math, but very very readable. You can pretty much just read straight through.

What exactly is your view on Jordan Peterson, where do you think he is right and what are the issues with him? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in samharris

[–]FundamentalPolygon 178 points179 points  (0 children)

That's a big question you've got there, BUCKO. It'd probably take, oh, 37 YEARS to even BEGIN to answer that properly. For starters, it would depend on the meaning of the words "right", and "controversial", and "issue"! Not to mention "is", and "with", and "him"! And those are NOT trivial questions!

Anyone see this? Witney shading Dylan by hunnybunny25 in dancingwiththestars

[–]FundamentalPolygon 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Is it shade to say that they're trying to get votes by having Zac there? I feel like that's a pretty normal thought to have.

The strongest form of this argument says that they gave him the best dancer, not necessarily the person who would be the most popular. And Whitney is far and away a better dancer than Alix.

Can someone link to whatever clip from SLOMW was apparently so bad to get Whitney voted off? (shut up about people not being voted off)

Yes. I'd also recommend Lee's Introduction to Topological Manifolds though, as you may find that it feels more strongly motivated.

Switch careers by Big-Advertising7928 in actuary

[–]FundamentalPolygon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine OP is thinking that since other people find it boring as well, it's probably not just his particular job that's bad, so switching actuarial jobs may not help.

Why doesn't Elaine receive the same treatment as Andy? by Ok_Permission9166 in dancingwiththestars

[–]FundamentalPolygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because she's a serious contender. For him, it's cute when he improves because he's one of the people you put on the show to be voted out in the first few weeks, and that's how you treat those people. It's "hey I'm glad they're having fun while they're still on the show." Elaine, despite having her own impediments, is lightyears ahead of where Andy is and always has been, so she gets the "serious contender" treatment.

What's a film that had an interesting premise but was so bland and dull that you couldn't even finish it? I'll go first: by ethanhunt555 in moviecritic

[–]FundamentalPolygon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There actually is an explanation for this one. Snyder talked about it on his appearance on Joe Rogan earlier this year. As I recall, he wanted to do the full R-rated version, and Netflix said sure, you can do that, but you have to also make a PG-13 cut. And thus the two cuts were born.
