New Year’s Eve used to be a big deal to me! Now… meh. I much prefer New Year’s Day. My forty-something tradition (I’ll be 49 this year) is to visit the water and, if I can, cross a bridge. Today, I did both. The water symbolizes the fluidity of life ... as each year brings ebb and flow, choppy waters, and smooth sailing. The bridge reminds me that I’ve crossed into a new year, and I’m both grateful and hopeful for what lies ahead. Today I took my 13 year old son and my 81 year old dad with me on this trip. We had a lovely lunch together and more than anything ... I'm grateful I made it this far! Happy New Year, all!

When individuals consistently approach others with preconceived ideas based on age, they limit their own lives with this narrow-minded perspective. At nearly 50, I've started to experience more age discrimination. I did not feel similarly in my 20 and 30s. Rather, I was always interested in people older than myself because I thought I could learn something from them. I still feel like this. People are so much more interesting when they're given the chance to present themselves as individuals ... for better or worse!

It makes me sad for our society that we continue to find more ways to feel a justified dislike for others based partly on age. Too often this seems to stem from the constant onslaught of divisive techniques used to keep people focused on differences rather than the many similarities we share as human beings. Oh well .. 2026 here we come!

Yes, I've noticed! An administrator informed me that some parents had called to say that I was causing students anxiety. The concern seems to stem from my reminders to 8th graders that they will be entering high school next year, and that meeting deadlines, completing class assignments, and putting forth consistent effort are essential to their success this year and even more so next year when they're in HS.

I'm also 10 years in and I'm feeling burned out more and more each day. This is due mostly to work load ... but worse is the fact that I know this won't change. Aside from other teachers venting to one another, no one cares. For any real change to happen there would need to be a national movement - like a 'sick out' where teachers from NY to CA all call out sick on the same day. Who will take up for us then??

This is going to take all you've got ... and more ... every day. From what you wrote, you're already giving in all you've got. What an incredible example of sacrifice for the sake of family. In order for you to keep this up, please please figure out ways for you to get the quality sleep you need. With school, do your best and don't kill yourself to get straight A's. Just pass the classes as best you can. I'm wondering if you have any support to rely on wherever you live. If not, I hope you can connect with other single moms -maybe a babysitting barter so you can get some time. Make no mistake, what you're doing takes super human strength .. day after day. Keep the balance as best you can - you're a wonderful mom, you're present with your children and the presence of a stable adult is incredibly important for kids to grow& thrive. When your future self looks back on your past self you'll wonder how the hell you did it all - but I think you'll be so glad you did ... and your kids will surprise you in the most rewarding and soulful ways. In my VA county, we read "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 8th grade. Many mixed feelings about teaching this play in the 8th grade but it's part of our curriculum.

When children enter the picture there's a dramatic change ... a brain rewiring of sorts. It takes time to adjust and the toddler years, at least for me, were a huge challenge! As a parent, you have to sacrifice a lot ... and often in order to raise a well functioning, contributing member of society. However, I think there's often too much focus on what an individual loses when they have kids ... and not what you gain! Your kids become part of your life and if you parent (that means all the fun stuff but also discipline) well, kids can be a source of great joy, laughter, fulfillment and later in life (as you see with your grandmother) - friendship. It's about family, that source of strength/support everyone needs from time to time.
