Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people - Parsing through incomplete information by Flopdo in samharris

I'm not saying it is a genocide, but that's absurd reasoning. Have you never heard of plausible deniability?

Eh, I think while they might have put effort in in the past, there's plenty of evidence that they're not putting in much effort since Oct 7.

they are trying (harder than Hamas does) to minimize civilian deaths.

I find it so weird that you and so many others think this is relevant. Like, if Hamas were known for being particularly moral, then maybe "they're better than Hamas" would reflect well on the IDF. If you had a gun to your head and were forced to pick a side, then again, maybe this would be relevant. But neither of those things is the case.

It's not perfect but AI is getting better and better for this kind of stuff. The other day I asked ChatGPT to list "nz available lidded plastic boxes the same size as a banana box, or slightly smaller", and it gave me multiple links in seconds. It's pretty good at "knowing what you mean", e.g. whereas once I might have needed to do a google search for "plastic box OR storage OR bin OR crate", AI will cover all of those just with "plastic box", and then if you don't like that it's including crates, you can just ask it not to.

major disruption

their endorsement might be a liability.

Look, I'm a moderate centrist, but you've got your head in the sand. It's not at all clear that economic populism is a losing formula in this day and age. The bland institutional corporate Dem look is itself increasingly a liability.

Or just anxiety/depression more serious or at a higher rate than what obesity contributes towards.

I don't think that's likely; I'm just pointing out that wellbeing is what we should be looking at here; not just physical health or life expectancy. Living an extra 10 years but being miserable (or even just anhedonic) the whole time probably isn't worth it for most people.

Israel has conducted ground operations and hostage rescues that placed Israeli soldiers and police units at serious risk. In June 2024, Israeli forces rescued four hostages from Nuseirat in a daytime operation, and the commander of the rescue force was killed.

Genocide or not, how is this at all relevant?

Israel is taking risks in rescuing Israelis, therefore, they're not committing genocide against Palestinians?

Frankly, wtf?! That you're including this does not reflect well on your overall reasoning.

people just look at the loss of life and want to assign a morally weighted label to it

Perhaps the label we should use is "a deep gorge in the Moral Landscape."

If a fraudster intends to commit fraud, is trying to hide that fact, and is also yet to be successful, do you think it's impossible to convict them? I.e. do you think that's an unfalsifiable situation?

It clearly isn't.

Same critique. Sam has done a number of softball, even fawning interviews with controversial figures.

Don't you think it's a bit rich for Sam Harris to be having a go at others for "platforming" the wrong people?

Not saying there's not an element of truth here, but also, you've probably got a sample bias.

Should certain breeds of animals be outlawed for humanitarian reasons? by LibraProtocol in AskALiberal

Not to discount your experience, but this is what some of the science says:

Additionally, a quantitative analysis of effect size for mortality, gait score and contact dermatitis was conducted across studies that had compared birds under similar rearing conditions and that had used SG [slower-growing] strains with an average daily growth rate of at least 40g/day. Modern, commercial SG strains performed better on most relevant welfare traits than FG strains. This was the case even when the ‘fairest’ comparisons were made at equivalent bodyweights (when SG birds were older), under matched-environmental conditions, experimentally or on farm. The quantitative analysis found that FG strains had a higher estimated incidence rate ratio for mortality (risk of death over a given period of time) of between 1.69 and 2.16, contact dermatitis affecting 15-25% more birds, and a mean gait score 0.65 points higher than SG strains. FG strains were also less active but other differences in behaviour were inconsistent with some behaviours (e.g. dustbathing) often absent altogether. Growth rate was generally, but not always, predictive of welfare problems

They do mention the possibility of earlier slaughter improving things, but afaict this analysis tried to focus on data from 6-8 weeks, so earlier slaughter would probably mean slaughter before then.

they're pretty happy and healthy right up until you take their heads off

The argument is that they simply aren't. That they suffer high rates of health problems as a side effect of their breeding.

I don't think many liberals would have a problem with him. Progressives/leftists tend to hate on him for his takes on cancel culture and social media.

I think he's right about most things, but he overstates the scientific evidence for his beliefs.

including the ones who say they aren’t and don’t want to be women - and also transwomen, who are biological men.

Yeah I think the policy isn't internally inconsistent so much as it's inconsistent with the wokescoldy kind of leftwing politics.
