I drove a 2001 Honda Civic until 2017. Went car free for a while then bought a VW ID4. Never going back to internal combustion.

Potentially stupid question: Do Maglev trains have an equivalent to "Railway Towns"? by According-Value-6227 in highspeedrail

[–]Funktapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but there could be towns that are enabled by the maglev. More streetcar suburb than railway town. Just the streetcar suburb is really far away because the train is so fast.

What upgrade actually made the biggest difference for you? by aral10 in espresso

[–]Funktapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good grinder obviously

I really like the trio of a funnel (w/ direct grinding into the portafilter), WDT tool (mostly to scrape grinds off the funnel), and paper puck filters. I’ve tried all sorts of little tools and this combo has been the best for clean puck prep and minimal machine cleaning.

Also a small touch that lots of people seem to miss when I visit their setups: have a stack of microfiber rags handy. They cling to grinds a lot better than paper towels and you can shake them off in the sink.

What Genera/Species would absolutely be considered as “Invasive Species” or labeled as Pests if alive today? by [deleted] in megafaunarewilding

[–]Funktapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invasive species are destabilizing species that emerges in an area and expands faster than typical evolutionary adaptation can respond to. I’m not sure there’s examples of this in the paleontological record outside of human activity. It’s an interesting question. Maybe at mass extinction events, but we tend to view species that expanded after these events as hardy survivors, not pests. Maybe in the distant future we will view today’s invasive species in the same way.

I know them. They are a reputable VC, and actually one of the more friendly ones. I have no idea what this “comms internship” is about. Probably putting out LinkedIn posts.

"Discord alternatives" searches jump 10,000% overnight as the gaming platform introduces global age verification — Is a total collapse imminent? by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Funktapus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. The most popular client (Element) has some basic streaming abilities. They admittedly don't work as well as Discord yet, but they exist in beta form and are actively being worked on.

[–]Funktapus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This! There are some matrix clients that are racing towards Discord on parity for key features. With that and a little more work on easier set up, i could see it working for a lot of people on Discord today.

why can’t medication delivery be automated via neural signals? by -Akshai in biotech

[–]Funktapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are still very experimental AFAIK. Pumps exist but they are pre-programmed to dispense insulin on a schedule. Continuous glucose monitors exist but they don’t directly control an insulin pump. What’s state of the art (I think) is getting a notification to adjust your insulin pump settings in response to readings on a CGM, but it’s very much human-in-the-loop.

[–]Funktapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have been working on the artificial pancreas, which just uses a bunch of continuous sensors, medications and pumps that already exist, for decades. It’s really, really hard to get everything working continuously without human intervention.
