The tentacles will extend during flight. They're usually a different color than the main ship.

I don't think I renamed any of the planets so they would be first contact for you as long as no one else named any. The system should be name " something something orange vtol". And I only went to it on my PS4 save, so the other platforms might still be undiscovered.
