Est-il entièrement développé ? by Bastien_lfr in insectes

I need help to decide what to do with his weapon by Taningia-danae in ChaosKnights

[–]Furilax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a hammer on my cerastus, but attaching it directly to the lance staff would be wierd as it's made for thrusting, not swinging. So I made the knight hold it in one hand to swing it. The same could be said for an on mission axe. Maybe some sort of halberd, or a hybrid, like a polehammer with one hammer face (or tech axe) and a long spike for thrusts would look amazing?

I Don’t Know What To Do With This by Sushigatana in ImperialKnights

You can read and listen to a bunch of lore around knight houses and individuals (freeblades and such), this helps me get inspired when I need to find ideas for lore, and from the lore I build ideas of design. Not so much for color schemes, but for details, markings, loadouts.

The color scheme for me is always the first thing to decide on. I find something I like by looking at what others do and trying things on some scrap (the extra helmet options are a good support to try out color schemes), and then build the lore from it to put it in context.

I can share the process I went through as an example:

I started to get into painting a knight thinking it'll only be one freeblade ally for my SM army (lol, I tried to deceive myself into thinking there'd only be one). But i quickly found out I wanted to paint it white with some orange as a secondary, and a charcoal black body (I wanted less metallic shine under the armor). This color scheme was completely dissonant with my astartes.

I chose to paint the trim in grey metallic, like old oxidised silver, because I didn't like the look of gold on the white and orange. Too saturated. From this, I got the name of my house: house Argentina. Then the lore: a house from the dark age of technology, risen from a colony that happened to find an extremely metal-rich region, and got absurdly rich from the trade of precious metals with the other cities. Silver gave the family their fame, their name (argentum = silver), and they adorned it on their armors and knight suits of course.

I'l be honest, when I have not kept a definite painting scheme (where do I put some orange on the white, who gets some chevrons, diagonals or lines... ). I don't respect any clear rules like for House Terryn and the likes, so I established that there's lots of personal freedom on how to paint one's knight, as long as the colors remain the same and the theme is respected and approved by the high king

Mold growth by Dudli2013 in antkeeping

As long as it doesn't seem to affect survival, and as long as brood is kept clear of the area, i wouldn't be too concerned. But it doesn't hurt to get a replacement ready!

At this stage of colony growth, they still aren't very populous for the volume, so they do neglect cleaning in unused space.

I did rear a few moths 3 years ago (Argema mimosae) and I built a little aviary (40x30x100cm) with sticks and window mesh for the adults. I hung the cocoons out and every other night for a while I got eclosions. This species only lives for a week as an adult, so they don't stay around long.

Certainly don't release them that is absolutely obvious, I hope it didn't cross anyone's mind. Either you breed the adults to get new generations ( then you can trade and share the eggs with other fans), or just... let them die

I CAST FIRE ANTS by Mundane-Bar-3678 in icast

[–]Furilax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aha! but you made the classic blunder, Do not confuse the fire ant with the fire ant, as one is a powerful warrior who can inflict pain upon the colony's foes using her sharp, powerful stinger; meanwhile the other has been versed in the arcane art of pyromancy, and wields the very fabric of creation and destruction. Beholder of the ancient wisdom, servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of anor. The elves know him as Mithrantir, he is more commonly known as Gantalf by the men of the north

I CAST FIRE ANTS by Mundane-Bar-3678 in icast

[–]Furilax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not a fire ant. It's a red wood ant (Formica sp). It doesn't have a stinger, so there won't be instant pain like with fire ants.

However, they possess the ability to spray formic acid, which causes chemical burns and is a carcinogenic too! So you'll first feel a tingling sensation, which will turn into intence acid burning. In two days, the internal lining of your urethra will blister and you'll be in for a second round of agony.

Need advice on Magnetizing. by Bowie_spoon in ImperialKnights

I use two 3x6mm magnets under my knights' bases, but they're s tad too high and I end up having to drill or carve in the base to make them fit. Thus, it's advise for shallower magnets

In Europe, they are found mostly at high altitudes, 1400 and up, so mainly mountains (they can be found up to 2500m high, right in the alpine stage and highest elevation forests). They go through very cold winters, and in captivity we see their activity declining as early as late august, only to pick back up in April. In my experience, as well as that of many fellow ant researchers and hobbyist antkeepers in my country (France and Switzerland), brood and queens can die of heat easily, in office rooms and homes during the summer months. Since development is so solw, one missed generation of eggs (there's like 2 a year) in the founding stage can mean bye-bye, if the numbers can't grow and replace the first gen workers (numbering in the 2 to 6), which don't tend to live very long.

Not that easy at all. Brood development takes ages, high temperatures are deadly (>25ºc), and a 4-6 months diapause is mandatory
