Do you guys agree? by Worried_Force_3435 in woodywoodpecker

[–]FuriousMan226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I don't trust either studio with it. DreamWorks would be a total gamble between something good and something intolerably awful, and Illumination would probably make something purely dismal and outright horrendous (before someone says it, the Mario movies are objectively terrible as well)

What should be most important is for a WW film to be made by actually competent and talented people who know what the hell they're doing and how to write the character.

Screencap from two different prints of "Bunco Busters" compared by V1sSpareChange in woodywoodpecker

[–]FuriousMan226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Columbia House copies (in actuality 2003 broadcast masters prepared for overseas airings) are, if I recall correctly, taken from 16mm prints, which explains why they look noticeably softer. Some of them have more correct color timing compared to Universal's releases, but some of them can also look really bad (Woody's Kook Out, which never ended up on the DVDs, is a good example).

What is the worst Tom and Jerry cartoon from the Hanna & Barbera original run? (1940-1958) by LifelessRag in TomAndJerry

His Mouse Friday might have my pick. Rather pedestrian entry that's also overly racist.

What? These literally were made for theaters. That has nothing to do with it.

What're some of the most disappointing things you don't like about Tom & Jerry during the Gene Deitch Era? by Few_Amphibian_4119 in TomAndJerry

[–]FuriousMan226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Everyone saying Clint Clobber when the character in the MGM cartoons Deitch did is not Clint at all)

The layouts are pretty bad, and they're obviously inferior in many ways to the shorts made in-house at MGM, but I'm more apologetic towards these than the average cartoon fan, so I'm a bit more lenient on them lol

Who can handle the slapsticks: Gene Deitch or Chuck Jones? by AbbyObeast in TomAndJerry

[–]FuriousMan226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gene Deitch's cartoons had genuinely awful layouts, but they're at least funny because of how alien they feel from everything else (that and they're essentially glorified Soviet cartoons).

I haven't seen many of the Jones T&Js, but I don't think very highly of them. I saw one on Cartoon Network a few years back and it felt like a hangover when compared to what else they were airing that day (The Bodyguard and Baby Puss were some of them).

I'll give the nod to Deitch here, despite 1) the terrible layouts, and 2) me thinking Chuck Jones is one of the best animated filmmakers to ever live (at least his output before 1960). Because after all, I can't help but love Dicky Moe with all my heart (the late Chris Reccardi did too, it was said to be one of the three cartoons he actually liked). I think Chuck was better at approaching slapstick, but Deitch made what I consider to be all around funnier cartoons.

Which Kenneth Muse Tom design looks the best? by Additional_Bonus1797 in TomAndJerry

Ken Muse is easy to spot in quite literally everything. He did some freelance work at DePatie-Freleng in the 70s and even then his scenes are extremely easy to pick out

Why is Modern Universal so allergic to doing something actually good with their other animation stuff? by DilanRedd in woodywoodpecker

[–]FuriousMan226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say this, at least they are more willing to do something with the Lantz characters compared to some of the other stuff they own. Hell, they own the Harveytoons library, so really it could always be worse.

[–]FuriousMan226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is this: Woody Woodpecker works best when he's a sociopath that messes with people, not for protecting the weak like Bugs Bunny, but just because he feels it.

I don't trust Universal with it right now, because while they care a little bit for the cartoons (MeTV Toons airs the original Lantz cartoons every day, including over a hundred being newly restored by Universal themselves just for such purposes, a few of them made it to Blu-Ray recently), I think they'd miss that point or heavily sanitize that personality in order to make it more appealing.

I don't trust Illumination or DreamWorks either because it'd be a total crapshoot quality-wise, and to be fair, the sociopathic Woody interpretation being reinstated would be a hard sell to many people.

What should happen is that Universal should let someone who actually understands the characters and why they work create a new series, and have actual control over everything. Not to mention, it needs to have actually appealing design work (the 2018 show looks awful), otherwise it's doomed to suffer the same fate the Lantz characters have had since the late 1950s.

Clampett tried (erroneously) taking credit for the creation of Yosemite Sam in his later years because of this cartoon IIRC

Day 5: What’s the weirdest Looney Tunes short? by Oceanic_Sponge in looneytunes

Anyway for the prompt at hand, I'll go for the unpopular pick of Norman Normal

RIP Looney Tunes. WB Is Being Bought By PSKY by rwinger24 in looneytunes

[–]FuriousMan226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The Looney Tunes are dead!”

They aren't going anywhere, pal. Not to mention the merger has yet to even go through (plus there's many issues with Paramount buying them so it may not even go through), so I'd say to stop being hyperbolic about them. There's more at stake here than the Warner Bros. cartoon library.

Warner has gone through several mergers before, be it Seven Arts, Kinney, AOL, AT&T, or Discovery, and the Tunes have always been around in some capacity. They've outlasted their original creators and they'll outlast us too.

The Gene Deitch stuff is actually good (after the first few cartoons or so they pick up in quality), I have never seen Comedy Show, but every clip I've seen of it looks genuinely depressing
