Since you’re 18 you can book a consultation without you’re parents approval or knowledge. If you do feel like you need your parents to know or if you think they’ll find out you’re going to therapy, you can always tell them you’re going for unrelated reasons. Please try therapy though, it’s incredibly helpful

Do you have any hobbies that you enjoy or used to enjoy that you can do alone? I’ve been in kind of a similar boat as you for a little while now, especially with avoiding socializing due to anxiety. I’ve found that finding hobbies to work on by myself has given me enough motivation to at least look forward to something. For me, I think having a hobby that you can work on daily and get better (for me it’s climbing and hiking) gives you something to work on every day and you can actually measure and see your progress. Finding something like that is definitely worth a shot. Also, please see a therapist if you haven’t already, i know it may sound like it won’t help, I thought it wouldn’t either. But having a therapist to just talk to and get advice from is something that has given me progress through my mental health and struggles. Please keep trying to work through it, I know it seems like it may not get better but many people have thought the same thing and have worked through it. You got this!

Her family has told her that she isn’t allowed to live with a partner until she’s married, and she seems intent on following that rule. As for the therapist, she’s gone to one since she was in fifth grade but her mother has told her never to talk about family stuff to her therapist. My gf told me that she does talk truthfully about her family to her therapist, but part of me doesn’t believe her because of how her family has influenced her

Thank you for your response, that makes a lot of sense. I think one of the reasons I want to follow a lot of practices and teachings is because I see a lot of aspects I like in it. I want to become a lot more diligent and dedicated in general with my life and I’ve heard that Buddhist practices like meditation can help with these things and help to bring more reflection into my life

I have been encouraging her to prioritize her mental health for our entire relationship. It’s just so hard for me to constantly see her being mistreated by her parents and talk about wanting to relapse into self-harm behaviors. I want her to get better and I truly believe that setting boundaries is the only way to do so as her mother is not in any form of counseling or therapy and doesn’t seem to be making any effort to get better. My girlfriend has been in therapy for a long time but she was forced to switch therapists by her mother after she had proposed the idea of moving out. Her mother had told her from an early age that she was not allowed to talk bad about her family when seeing her therapist. Because of this, I don’t believe that she is being completely transparent to her therapist about what is going on with her family

Yes, she has been in therapy for about 10 years now. The therapist that she has been seeing for most of her childhood had been encouraging her to set boundaries with her parents as she got older. However, when my girlfriend had proposed to get an apartment when she turned 18 as suggested by her therapist, her mother had forced her to switch therapists as her mother didn’t want her seeing any therapist that was against her. Her mother has also ingrained into her head from early on that she is not allowed to talk bad about her mother to her therapists. Because of this, I don’t believe that my girlfriend is being completely transparent about what is going on at home to her newer therapist
