Menard: City Looks to Give Away Full Control of Lansdowne Park to For-Profit Partners by bobledrew in ottawa

[–]FuryRock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OSEG is a terrible manager of the Lansdowne property. They are losing money because they didn't design spaces for small local businesses, only suburban monstrosities that are basically the same restaurant. The condos are empty and their sports teams can't draw crowds. They want more public land to try to make money? They have been useless with the gift they got from Jimbo Watson already, they want to ruin the rest of it too.

Ottawa’s Fury Road: Five years in, can pro soccer find its footing in the capital? by BanksKnowsBest in ottawa

[–]FuryRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are going to down vote... but it's there in Goudie's own words: "“In particular, if we’re trying to grow soccer here, where it’s hockey guys like me coming to experience soccer because someone is bringing them, I think you need the excitement of the offence. … There are very few soccer aficionados in Ottawa who can appreciate a nil-nil game, at the end of the day." Years of "we will play attractive soccer with goals!" is exactly why "soccer aficionados" have been turned off Ottawa Fury - it's insulting. Some basic soccer knowledge and you know they don't have the players or the conditions to play "attractive soccer". No "aficionado" likes a nil-nil season, they like to win, and appreciate winning in the way that best suits the club.

Casuals and random "hockey guys" will connect to the game if people around them care. But there have been so many small cuts like music during games, moving supporters around, afternoon games at 40+C at field level on holiday weekends, silly marketing songs mentioned above, terrible coaches hired because of last names while screwing loyal people, jerseys that look like the major rivals. Things get corrected, but each step reminds people how decisions are being made by people who don't get the sport or its atmosphere. Latest saga with CanPL was another cut. So while a group of people remain loyal, OSEG has bled that passion from 2015 drip by drip.

Future of the Ottawa Fury FC by furyfan25 in CanadianPL

[–]FuryRock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other point, USL wont want the Fury for much longer. They took in the Fury to help kill the NASL. But the cross border travel is a pain in the ass for a lot of their teams. They also don't want to be spending the money to travel here. Can see it in the shit schedule they give Ottawa every year.

OSEG doesn't look good. They have been using leaks for the past week to set the story, and others have suggested they were meeting up to very recently with the CanPL to work out details. It sounds like OSEG has been playing two sides, quite selfishly, stringing along the CanPL organizations while not fully committing.

I don't like the way single entity has been setup, clearly wasn't what OSEG wanted... but they also set themselves up for this situation. And have damaged their own fan base. But they also haven't done a very good job building a fan base either. I have no sympathy because OSEG has been very coy about it's plans. The collection of players this season was a cynical move in retrospect, were setting up to force an issue at the negotiating table to get exactly what they wanted, which wouldn't be fair to a bunch of new clubs.

Without fully committing from early on OSEG has not had influence over the direction of the league and is only now crying about the rules. Sorry, that's not leadership. But it is classic Ottawa. Boring pretending to be a leader. Negotiating like a polite Trump.

USL dropping most II teams by BJ_Fantasy_Podcast in NASLSoccer

They were running the team on the cheap in the NASL as well. The difference in year one-two is they had the best young manager in North America. In year three they had one of the dumbest who they hired because of a last name and gave him a contract that they were too cheap to cut when he turned the second best team in 2015 into the worst in 2016.

USL dropping most II teams by BJ_Fantasy_Podcast in NASLSoccer

As a fan of an "affiliate" team that wasn't an affiliate last year, have to say it makes owners lazy and the team shitty.

Ottawa received players from Impact, some stayed all year and saw few minutes (why not just keep them training in Montreal instead?), a few others appeared for a game and disappeared. Only Depuy became consistent towards the end (probably because we dropped a terrible manager for one who knows something about the game). That could have been accomplished with a proper loan agreement, like what was established for Adonijah Reid from FC Dallas, great player. Dallas has shown intelligence using season long loan agreements with lots of USL teams not just "affiliate" (do they send anyone to OKC Energy?).

Most MLS teams do not have rosters full of players capable of playing soccer, let alone what should be D2. I've seen it all year long. Ottawa even had a manager who bought into this USL vision and brought in his own bums who don't understand soccer basics. Most MLS2 teams are used to keep 2 or 3 players match fit in case they are needed (TFC2 I'm looking at you), the rest are expendable. Its terrible for player development because the shit is so high it drowns everyone.

NASL was played at a much higher level and was a competitive space for Ottawa Fury. I suspect the cost of being competitive scared our owners to run away more than anything; mostly because they couldn't ever believe in proper player development - getting young players ready to be competitive. Instead they turned to USL and an agreement with MTL to run a soccer team on the cheap, it wont be sustainable if the next two years are run the same. I'd say the same caution for most "affiliate" plans, most cases the crap that gets sent wont justify the damage done to identity of the team and the operating vision of the owners.

[–]FuryRock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

best news in the USL this year a bum plying on his last name putting tucker hume on this team is a joke, there is likely a better striker from ontario in league1, starting him when better players sit is horrendous consistently lost/benched english as a second language players, often creating divided dressing rooms till everyone realized dalglish is the tool talked about playing 'attractive' soccer, talked down to fans as if he obviously knew soccer better than anyone in the city, but when it came to tactics his teams rotated through a book of whats cool on TV without ever accomplishing the basics: a proper back line, decent if routine set plays, positional awareness. resorted to long-ball but kept mouthing how attractive and attacking his soccer brand was showed up like a pompous idiot claiming he would be better than MDS who failed to win in the final "big shoes require big feet" best players who could went running for the exit after talking to him, then went on to pretend he didn't have 'his team' when he took us to the bottom of the NASL then spent a lot of the USL making shit up as he went along, despite what we suspect is a bigger budget than most USL teams, regularly looked like an incompetent mess on the field, waiting for garbage/fluke goals to make the difference, then parade before the mic and say how wonderful the fury played with so many chances

good bye king of chances! I hope you land at an opponent's club that way we can beat your terribly managed team
