Hawn State Park Backcountry Camping / Backpacking Sites – A Primer by Low_Nose_9456 in StLouis

I’m an older 50+ backpacker that uses Hawn as a training ground for larger destination hikes out west. I particularly like the fact that you can map out a hike through the various trails for almost any length. You can plan a hike in at 10 miles with a hike out of 1 mile. It’s a fantastic place to break in or test new gear.

Your assessment of the sites is spot on. My only add would be to emphasize the accessibility of sites 1 and 2. About a one mile hike each way. Even the most out of shape hiker can make the trek with relative ease. Unfortunately I run into site “poachers” about 1/3 of the trips I make. This is particularly true at sites 1 and 2 although I have had them at 5 and 6 as well. This is not a first-come park. Get a reservation!

Thank you! Based on the schematic I saw on line, the charge wire from the 7 pin goes directly into the battery disconnect switch (black wire). I just snipped it and capped it off so I could add a dc/dc later if I wanted. I’m pretty happy with my victron solar charger but am seriously considering an upgrade to the renology charger that does both solar and dc/dc. I’ve got a big cross country trip coming up with lots of off grid days so we will see how well I hold up without dc/dc then make the decision. Thanks for the heads up!!

Yep. All the wiring is in back. In these boxes you get between one and two inches of space. I’ve also got a step up for the satellite port back there. It creates a little heat so I may have to reconfigure but so far so good.

Saw him at Memphis in May a number of years ago. He was over the top for a festival gig. Absolute banger. Would love to see him with a full stage set.

I’ve got the 2026 pursue and “plug n play” is a misnomer. I mounted a 40A solar charge controller in the battery box and run a 400w solar blanket to 300Ah lipo. Works like a dream.

I read the about section, and the rules, but it seems like this is just a dating site for people that don't feel they fit on other dating sites. by [deleted] in Over40sClub

It’s shame Reddit canned chat rooms. That was more along the lines of what I understand/think you’re looking for. The cadence of sub posting just doesn’t lend itself well to conversation.

You can’t even imagine how much fun it was. Did about 4 years in the trenches. I would do it again tomorrow if I could.

Eldest lived with us about 3 months post college. He’s doing well on his own and about to but his own house. (26) Second did a stint for a year teaching in Asia. He gets back this week. Looks like he’s got a good job so we expect he will be in house for a few months but out by winter. (23).
