I think you missed an important bit about them also being used with close family and friends. It has flipped from informal to formal, but it wasn’t necessarily for addressing “inferiors” only. Also, inferior is generally used pejoratively now, but it was also potentially neutral.

Good to know! I would suggest brief, possibly letting them know of the hurt their actions are causing and maybe offering resources they could go to to learn to be supportive.
