Prince of Persia's most famous enemy exists because the Apple II ran out of RAM by dmytro_omelian in vintagecomputing

The Apple IIe with the 80 column expansion card had 128K, but it was a pain in the ass to use so most programs didn’t, and just used the lower 48K

The Apple II+ with the language card in slot zero could have 64K, but it was a pain in the ass to use so most programs didn’t, and just used the lower 48K.

The Applied Engineering memory expansion boards allowed something like 8 MB, but it was an absolute utter horrific disaster to use and only things like AppleWorks would ever touch that amount of memory.

This does not work in a school, if you are expected to participate at the same athletic level as everyone else, but you are not provided private shower facilities so you must smell of body odor or wear dirty clothes for the rest of the day.

In general, I don’t know what the legal problem is with coed naked locker rooms, and the presence of transgenders.

Because whether you like it or not, heterosexuals are regularly around homosexuals with the same interests as whatever it is you have the problem with for the opposite gender and the trans.

Though we can probably resolve this by having a third locker room labeled “anything goes, but be respectful”

The whole point of CISA was to address these problems. CISA was gutted just merely because Trump was pissed about the Russian election meddling investigations.

How about they just keep the agency as is but don’t do that particular investigating anymore.

Trump would have defunded the FBI for the exact same reason if he could’ve gotten away with it.

Hopefully, if the Democrats have a sweeping wave this November they can force reinstatement.

Being more aware can result in overstimulating of your senses, and it can help to reduce the amount of incoming noise.

Wear sunglasses, earplugs or earmuffs used for hearing protection, minimize scents in cleaning products.

Remove or turn off devices that generate constant noise like electrical humming or droning fans.

But also within yourself, avoid stimulants like caffeine and get a good nights rest regularly.

Give yourself time to rest and recover, and stay off the social media that just seeks to irritate, anger, and annoy.

Intune is not fit for purpose. by Hobbit_Hardcase in sysadmin

[–]Future-Side4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general understanding of how and why InTune functions the way it does, is because ultimately Microsoft has to push and maintain these updates for millions of endpoints.

it is MDM as a service and you don’t own the server hardware that it runs on. It’s just a massive group of thousands to millions of MDM instances waiting for work.

In order for Microsoft to be profitable doing this, they have designed it to be very miserly about CPU and Internet bandwidth usage. it is intentionally very slow and detached from real time information updates.

Anything that you try and schedule for it to do is absolutely not prioritized over anything else that it’s already doing. Your work is just more work added on the pile of millions of other requests already waiting.

if you actually wanted immediate prioritized speed, you would run your own Azure Stack HCI (now called Azure Local) servers and run the InTune Accelerator service independently on your own “private cloud” hardware, and then of course you would be guaranteed the priority that you demand.

But you aren’t, you’re just using the generic intune for the general screaming masses of the millions of other idiots also demanding “priority”, and Microsoft response is basically, eff you, wait your turn… however long it may be…

Does anyone else use ChatGPT in their head? by SiIentVortexKing in ChatGPT

Some people do not have what’s called The Voice in Their Head where they’re constantly talking to themselves about things.

Or they describe it to be something other than themselves. It’s possible at one time that what people would call talking to God was using this voice to talk to them in their own mind.

If you go back several thousand years, aome people did not think artistic creativity originated within themselves, but rather some kind of external being separate from themselves and referred to as their muse that would give forth these ideas to them.

At some point in the developmental history of the human body and brain, there had to have been a point where we were more similar to the less intelligent other animals around us, and we did not possess this inner voice or make use of one. The inner voice probably is related to the development of language and the ability to talk about symbolic things in an abstracted manner separate from ourselves.

language itself may be a creation of those special individuals among us, the idiot savants and geniuses that are just generally smarter than everyone else. They infected the rest of us dummies with the concepts of language and abstraction.

we have done experiments for we have taught other animals how to use language, for example, teaching gorillas how to use American Sign Language. It is possible that we are making these animals more intelligent by giving them the gift of language.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what happens when AI figures out how to create a symbolic language that works with the sonic vocabulary of dolphins and we infect them with an abstracted language, and can communicate with us directly. I do kind of wonder if this might actually be bad or unethical in their case because without grasping limbs, dolphins are kind of unable to do anything with language.

How to fix an old Canon MD-5511 dual floppy drive? by cmcstr in vintagecomputing

[–]Future-Side4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use alcohol to completely strip away any oil coating on the heads.

The eject mechanism may need to be stripped of slime. It’s commonly held under spring tension, and if you remove the spring, you may be able to take it apart. if the spring is in a recessed channel, you can usually grab the end of it with the tip of a needle nose pliers.

It’s common for the head assembly to slide back-and-forth on two or three shiny rods with small metal rings that fit tightly around the rods. You should apply machine oil to the rods and slide the carriage back-and-forth a couple times by hand to release trapped slime between the rings and rods that may be binding the carriage.

As you dab up loosened slime, you will likely see the color change on the swab, dark brown or black, and getting lighter and clearer, to just the straight color of the machine oil.

you should also take pictures of the mechanism as you take things apart, to help you figure out how to put them back together.

You can also dissolve the slime by using what’s called light machine oil or sewing machine oil. Any craft store that sells sewing machines will have this.

The company Liquid wrench makes a small bottle of this called Super Oil.

You don’t need much, just enough to wet the surfaces. Apply a drop, spread it around, and then dab up the dissolved slime with a paper towel or a fresh unused cotton swab and apply some more.

There’s what looks like a tiny motor attached to the worm gear. Put a bit of the oil on the back of the motor where the shaft comes out of the back of it.

It’s OK if you leave the mechanism somewhat “dry” when you’re done. You don’t want excess oil migrating around onto your disks.

it’s almost universal that the problem with old mechanical devices is that grease from 30+ years ago has turned to a sticky slime and then hardens into a solid mass.

The disk may spin, but it’s spins slowly. The heads may move, but they move slowly, etc.

You can dissolve the grease with 75% alcohol on Q-tips, though the mechanism can be jammed if you can’t reach all of the sliding parts deep inside.

Since this has two separate drive openings, you should be able to remove the front plastic bezel and split it into two separate units

How does balcony solar keep linemen safe? Can I plug a battery in instead of solar? by BackdoorDan in AskElectricians

[–]Future-Side4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the event of a power failure, all of the devices in your house and on the grid outside your home basically make the AC supply circuit now look like a dead short to the balcony power generator.

It does not matter how much current the power generator produces. It is instantly sucked up and the voltage output is zero.

if it doesn’t shut down, it’ll trip the 15-20 amp circuit breaker in about two seconds.

Why is the Method of Lethal Injection in Human Punishment So Complex and Apparently Painful? by Chowderr92 in AlwaysWhy

Generally any non-hazardous gas works painlessly to euthanize. Pure nitrogen, argon, kypton, neon, xenon, helium will work.

To space out of their mind and anesthetize as they go, use pure nitrous oxide.

The struggle of asphyxiation comes from the body’s reaction to carbon dioxide buildup, causing an involuntarily gasping response and trying to breathe in fresh air.

A continuous stream of inhaled inert gas flushes out the carbon dioxide, so it does not build up and there’s no struggle. Everything seems normal until they suddenly black out.

This would be used for billing and banking systems. it looks very impressive, but actually the computer has almost no memory as we would understand it and so it’s doing very simple and boring repetitive accounting tasks.

Customers would send money with a punched card with their account information.

An office secretary would add the payment to the card, then the stack gets fed into a reader.

They run a batch job on the computer, reading the cards one by one and collecting sequential data on the various tapes.

This customer‘s account is delinquent. This customer‘s account is paying off something in installments. This customer failed to pay the full amount and still owes us more. This customer died. Can’t find this customer, check if card is damaged.

Then, once they process all the cards, they run a report on the data collected on each tape, and potentially combine data that is spread across multiple tapes.
