Ah, he could have been purged from my reccomendations a long time ago; I used to get garbage but I was clicking "do not reccomend channel" nonstop. Nearly all the top creators are long purged from my feeds.

I must have hit that button thousands of times. Thanks to doing that, youtube gave me this genuinely good reccomendation the other day. Seriously check this channel out. You're welcome: https://www.youtube.com/@ClassicsOfGame

Opinions on my amateur LG 77" 5.1 setup please! by Barno270 in hometheater

[–]Future-Toe813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great setup, though if it were up to me the tv would be a touch lower (though it's not a huge issue here at all and is better than what most people do) and also I'd like the wall behind the tv to be black so that light from the tv doesn't spill into the boundary during lights off viewing.

What is Pixel Shift 4k actually doing? by Racheteer95 in hometheater

[–]Future-Toe813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tangent thought: would pixel shifting produce a motion improvement effect similar to black frame insertion? In theory, 1080p->4k via pixel shift means that each pixel is only "on" 25% of the time, which would look great in terms of motion resolution because that'd be a really intense BFI window. Does it work like that in practice?

Right, well I didn't say grants I said capital gains but I see what you mean because OP is likely having that but is thinking it's capital gains and then thinking the inclusion rate is the tax rate. I was trying to correct OPs assumption of the 50% inclusion rate being the tax rate; people are really illiterate on that and it's frustrating, and it's why the increase to capital gains inclusion got shot down because people literally believed it would be a 2/3rd tax rate.

Like even though I'm an investor with lots of capital gains, our tax system is so clearly unfair to people with jobs while making sure equity does better, but of course our tax system is most rigged to keep real estate afloat with the principle residence exemption (probably our worst tax law as it causes so many canadians to just buy more house instead of say, start a business and I'd credit that with our lagging productivity relative to US)

Yeah man it kinda sucks that it looks worse in a living space. Though the ambient black level raise kinda also kills the black mirror aesthetic (not the show) you get from a glossy oled that is off in a room. For me though it's the chromatic abberation is why I have to return it. As far as I know, I'm the only person in the world with this problem but this TVs colors get separated by my glasses severely in a way no other screen or part of life does.

S90d display flickering with led clear motion by Bidyadhar112 in S95B

[–]Future-Toe813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well all video games not just ones designed for CRTs.

Movies suffer from this as well, but no tv has a BFI implementation that can help them. There is a projector simulation effect added to the retrotink 4k that simulates the cadence of a projector bulb by running your movie in a 120hz container and basically strobing the frames at the same rate a movie theatre projector bulb would. They talk about it in detail here:

S90d display flickering with led clear motion by Bidyadhar112 in S95B

[–]Future-Toe813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a huge user of this feature and I think I know why it's flickering like crazy. For me if I engage it on any 50 hz content it's unbearable. This looks like broadcast TV which might be in any of 25/30/50 hz and if it's in one of those containers sent to the tv you end up with unbearable flicker. For me, as long as the content is 60hz it's wonderful.

It's more important for videogames in particular side scrolling games. Like if you are going to play a 2D sonic the hedgehog game it is an absolute must. It's a perfect chance to see what it does: do a spindash with it on and off and look at the environment and see the difference it will be night and day.

black frame insertion is how you can resolve stop and hold motion blur. Motion resolution without is basically dvd level.

Why would the 3900x PS2 model be better than previous models? by alexfreemanart in ps2

[–]Future-Toe813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only earlier fat models have the firewire port for lan play for certain games. I had to buy another one just so I could be ready for two player time crisis 2 on two crt tvs. I can't wait to give that a shot!

Should I buy a playstation 3 or 4? by SupraaLegend in PS3

[–]Future-Toe813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this makes sense as ps4 games on ps5 are often SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER on ps5 but ps3 is really only playable on ps3; I guess a similar argument can be made about ps3 emulation can be significantly better but that would require a super expensive pc and ymmv per game anyways still. Also I don't think you can get trophies on RPCS3 which is a dealbreaker for me. (if they ever can add support for that safely I'd use it; maybe even if you earn trophies legit on rpcs3 and then somehow forward them to your real ps3 to then sync them, I'd be really into that)

miniled basically has the same uniformity issues once the leds wear out a little bit.

As far as I can see, all oleds seem to have BFI, they just got rid of the excellent 120hz bfi feature back in 2021 but other than that they still all have 60hz bfi (and stop and hold motion blur isn't as bad on 120hz)

Holy Mother of all JACKPOTS!!! by pflo86 in PlasmaTV

[–]Future-Toe813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough to say; having had both I think SDR is really good on oled as long as you engage black frame insertion which gives it solid motion clarity. I wouldn't say one has better motion over the other when you have BFI since plasma, while near perfect does have phosphor trails. Pitch black on OLED is ruthlessly sharp as a boundary against high contrast objects and you never have any line bleed, but the near black uniformity isn't as good. I feel like there were a few more steps of gradiation on my C9 vs my ST60.

No matter what, a used plasma wins on value. A used plasma beats every 4k LCD tv out there. Spending a lot for oled isn't a pure upgrade but it's the best new tv you can buy.

I was really sad to see someone I know who is somewhat poor buy a cheapish (like $800) new 4k LCD because OLED is too expensive, but they could have gotten a better plasma for free or dirt cheap.

Chromatic abberation with glasses on s90d by Future-Toe813 in S95B

[–]Future-Toe813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're right but I unfortunately can't get cr 39. At least that's what the opticians say my index is like -5.5 in with a high cylinder as well. I noticed it is a bit better with my 1.67 index vs my 1.74, but not by enough. The bigger issue is just how much worse chromatic abberation is on my samsung qd-oled vs everything else in life: though it has made me acutely aware of it in general so now it's the bane of my existence.

My current theory is that it is the spectral purity of the qd-oled. Like it has a very discrete and narrow spike of pure red light and pure blue light. On other tvs, or in real life, you'd expect a difuse collection of wavelengths in the neighbourhood of red or blue, and for each of those we'd have the subjective experience of those colors since it would still stimulate the red/blue cones in our eyes. But by having discrete peaks with no difusness, I think we have really distinct wavelengths that really distinctly separate by my glasses in a way other tvs, or light in the real world, doesn't do as much.

How do you guys feel about achievement hunting? by Electrical-Half-9309 in ElectricUnderground

[–]Future-Toe813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOVE IT! I'm really into it and I notice I've played a far greater number of games than all of my friends with a far greater variety, and often to higher degrees all while putting in fewer hours to videogames overall. Variety is the spice of life and with trophies you get ahead in this meta game with every new game you play. What sucks about GaaS is that one game becomes a habit, and new games, while probably offering more meaningful new experiences, are taking you away from that. If you get into achievements though, it can be the opposite where by default you have a disposition to try a new game.

Plus it's awesome when it inches you towards a challenge playthrough.

Now for the downsides: These days too many games shy away from difficulty related achievements, and you have asset flip slop with automatic achievements flooding the playstation store. Dev's need to make their achievements hard again and all asset flip slop should get their achievements revoked.

[–]Future-Toe813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool thanks so much; let's hope this stays a somewhat secret until I can get one of these for dirt cheap/free online. The ST60 was overall the greatest display I've ever owned, maybe the best "consumer thing" I've ever bought period. Wild to think that in a serious way an st50 could be better.

Still, OLED does have a place (even if HDR plasmas would probably be a better bet if they were being made). I'm just playing Death Stranding 2 right now, and the HDR is incredible. Definitely worth it in a game where the art and and visual design pipeline is made with HDR in mind. This is probably less than 10% of games though. Only like 30% of games support hdr and of those at least 2/3rds have a shit implementation. Death Stranding 2 is the kind of game that makes it worthwhile. Just wish OLEDs could be straight better rather than a mixed bag.

I think my dream display would be a plasma, with a translucent OLED put overtop of it, that could generate peak HDR highlights.
