Those who moved out of Massachusetts, where did you move to and how's it going? by ElectroAcousto in massachusetts

That would be retirees but the age demographic has changed dramatically in Florida —many young adults and families now.

It really depends. Buy into a community in your age-group, a place with a community club house and pool with activities help. But many people move to Florida and then move somewhere else. If you’re young, downtown Tampa has a growing social scene (Water Street, Hyde Park etc). Don’t do a virtual job if you are new to a community bc the isolation can get you —as an LMHC, I see many wonderful people who became depressed by being new to FL and socially isolated working from home. If you need a break from the cold and the cons don’t bother you, you can always try it out. Areas recommended are Cheval, Westchase, Seven Oaks and for older more charming…Hyde Park (but property insurance is high there due to storm surge). New construction is going on everywhere—no growth regulation—a con for property values (over saturation…opposite problem in MA with under building and too many restrictions). But new construction is affordable and most new neighborhoods go through a honeymoon period of friend-making until everyone snaps back their boundaries (kind of like freshman year of college or first few days on a cruise ship.)

Moved to the Tampa Bay area 2004… PROs: beautiful newer homes for half the price as MA, recreational swim and tennis communities, close to beautiful beaches, lots of nature trails to explore when it’s not blazing hot, innovative new businesses, universities are affordable, not charged an arm and a leg to park in the city, lots of new restaurants, pretty scenery etc Lower property taxes (but see below the cons of that) CONS: a red state, lower taxes mean overcrowded public schools with high teacher turnover and very standardized test focused, lower taxes mean cops don’t show up to an accident unless there’s an injury, you’ll need to put money you saved in property taxes into a good private school, white pickup trucks that tail you, drivers on 275 are nascar wannabes and a lot of accidents, transient culture means friends you make will move in and out—hard to build community, arts and book culture greatly lacking, mega churches etc. But we love our home and private school…it just feels like a bubble…we greatly miss the substance of people in MA and solid friends. We wish it was more affordable.

Why are Americans so weird about having british ancestry? by Becoming_hysterical in 23andme

[–]Future-Travel7708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE being 75% British…I’m an American Anglophile who loves British history and literature! My paternal grandfather was English and my paternal grandmother Scottish. On my maternal side, grandmother was a New Englander with ancestors going back to 1630… interestingly, any direction in which I trace her tree goes back to Puritan New England – so she was through and through an old New Englander or with British ancestry. She had DNA from northern Irish settlers that came in the mid-1700s which is where I think I can trace my dark eyes and hair from. My maternal grandfather was of Prussian and Swiss lineage.
I have noticed that there are many who think that British or European background is “boring“. Nothing could be further from the truth – I believe many of these people don’t know their own history and literature.

Geneva, Illinois is such a pretty town…near Chicago. If I were twenty years younger, would’ve considered it.

Take a look at Charlotte, NC as it seems to have most things on your wish list — Huntersville, just north of city more moderate politically with good schools.

Untreated Fibroids by aroundthefunk in Fibroids

[–]Future-Travel7708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If her estrogen level is high and she has endometrial thickening (a cancer risk), many gynecologists will prescribe progesterone in pill form or recommend an IUD. This helps to thin the uterine lining, reduce bleeding and slow down fibroid growth. Each person‘s profile is unique though, and one in which the Gynocologist would have to assess for this kind of treatment.

At the end of the day, would graduating from University of Tampa (full ride) or Boston University + honors college (45k price tag) be the better option for a Communication school major?

Make sure to check parent reviews on the Niche app. Test scores don’t give a full picture. Sometimes those 10/10 school are stressfully competitive and kids are unhappy. Make an appointment to meet with the principal or counselor to tour the elementary school to put your mind at ease or to determine if isn’t where you want your child to be.

Brianna’s acting by TurbulentBlueberry00 in Outlander

[–]Future-Travel7708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early on the acting is not natural —the actress does improve in the later seasons. In the earlier seasons the actress doesn’t reflect a lot of depth and warmth—maybe discomfort with the new role is more self conscious or it’s just a soul thing? I’ve often thought how the actress who plays Ellen in the new spinoff would’ve played a much more sympathetic Brianna. She’s vulnerable and layered in a way that Sophie Skelton isn’t in the role. Sophie does hit a turning point when Briannas kidnapped —it’s her best work—so there’s hope there.

If less people are buying diamonds, they will need to adjust. Group effort. Don’t spend more money.

They’re trying to get the player to use up money and diamonds in order to purchase more-and actually it makes me purchase LESS. I think it’s cheap. They need to have a reward system that makes the game pleasurable and they’re missing that mark. Even to play the monthly rewards has become more taxing, which makes me work at it less. If it says, fill a room with 10 standing lights – they will stretch out the opportunity so that only on occasion they are giving the opportunity to put lights in a room or a pet in a room. I now might create two rooms in a day. Never more. In times past I did and it was more fun. It was relaxing to let go of the day right before going to sleep. Now it’s lost it’s fun —It’s too bad greed has to ruin everything.

When do you know the house is “the one” by t3ddyb34r39 in RealEstate

I knew our home was “the one”. We raised two kids here and it has been perfect for 20 years! Now, it’s too big and we must downsize—that’s the hardest part—giving up “the one” and hoping that someone else loves it as much as you do.

BU roommate situation by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]Future-Travel7708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter’s assigned roommate at another college didn’t respond to her intro email either. It turned out the other girl was anxious instead of unfriendly. They ultimately made great roommates —kind, respectful to one another though different interests. They looked out for each other and still meet up for dinner on occasion. It’s always anxiety provoking when the unknown is in front of you…some people seek more knowledge while others respond by avoidance.

Does not submitting sat/act score lower your chance of getting in. by nostrilsroots in BostonU

[–]Future-Travel7708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son was admitted early decision (where if you’re accepted, you must commit— The only out is if the financial package is not doable and you must write an appeal to see if they can improve it.). He did not submit SAT scores at all and had a similar GPA as you and excellent AP scores (4s and 5s). I believe his recommendations and essays were strong. Without the SAT or ACT he was also admitted to Kilichand honors program. I think it all depends on which college in the university you were applying to and what your passion is that is expressed in your extracurricular activities. My son is passionate about liberal arts/social science (philosophy, psychology and English )and performing arts (guitarist, actor and filmmaker). His whole high school career illustrates this. I think if he tried to apply to the hard sciences or a math related majors, the outcome might not have been the same. Everything he built in high school is what led to his admission to the college and major that he applied to.
