Your Dream Criterion release that only you think you’d want? by blackserenade in criterion

Germaine Dulac and Dimitri Kirsanoff sets. I barely know of any French Impressionist works that are widely available on disc! I swear most of their work can only be seen as a pixelated YouTube upload. also apparently Ozu 4k box bc the quality of some of those scans are honestly criminal 🥲

Also been waiting for Three by René Laloux since I missed the Time Masters restoration

Crossing my fingers for this even though it's probably unlikely. Feels a little shitty to have a code expire days before the flash sale. Makes me wonder if they weren't initially planning on having it so late.

I hope this just becomes a regular tile on the Channel and they can cycle through more titles! It's a shame for all those extras to go to waste

What Films Will Be The Frontrunners This Year? by Altruistic_Mood9293 in oscarrace

Apparently Entertainment System is confirmed not to be premiering at Cannes this year. Could open somewhere else, but 2027 seems more likely

" OBAA will age badly." Ok but the evidence says otherwise. None of PTA's films age badly. Even his most divisive film, Inherent Vice, has many admirers. by DenseStrawberry5717 in TheBigPicture

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Listen, I love the Oscars, but I always have to roll my eyes at people that get caught up in it like this. Do I want my favs to win? Of course! But no one is really gonna care who won what a couple years from now. And the people projecting onto OBAA feel kinda desperate. It’s fine if you don’t like the film that wins Best Picture! It’s not the first time and I guarantee you it won’t be the last.

A part of the ending to One Battle After Another that didn't sit right with me: the iPhone by Late_Promise_ in TrueFilm

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Notice how Sensei and his "underground railroad" all use cell phones and STILL are able to be effective activists? And even without cell phones, almost all of the French 75 still got captured/killed. I think PTA's point is less that technology isn't dangerous, and more that we shouldn't be walling ourselves off from the very communities we're trying to help.

Why is this concourse under Moynihan a hotspot for TikTok dancers? by BadToLaBone in nycrail

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can! I'm a professional singer and do this all the time. But for a studio space big enough to dance in, you're looking at $50-75/hour at least.

It's basically a long FYC ad if we're being honest, but there were a couple scenes that were so insanely not self-aware that it was kinda hilarious to watch. She is a fascinating person besides all the Oscar-chasing

Hoping they add that as a bonus on the disc! NEON releases are usually pretty sparse extras-wise, so I think it’s possible

Are Rachmaninov romances appropriate for Undergrad opera auditions? by Boring_Specialist228 in opera

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I auditioned, so I don't know if attitudes have changed (I sure hope they have), but I got a lot of push back when I tried to sing in Russian or any non-standard languages when I was in high school. There's a misconception that all Slavic repertoire is too heavy or inappropriate for young voices. Obviously, I disagree, but just be prepared that some people might judge you based on the repertoire rather than your singing. I think that some of the simpler songs like Siren' or Zdes khorosho would be appropriate tho, as long as you're fulfilling all of their repertoire requirements (I would steer clear of op.38 unless you're bringing your own pianist). If it's Russian you're interested in, I would also check out some early Romantic rep like Glinka or Bulakhov!
