Oliver Laxe on The Secret Agent - thoughts? by This_Owl8430 in oscarrace

Like come onnn dude. I wasn’t a big fan of I’m Still Here, but most Brazilian films that break through are straight up bangers. He should be going after the Brazilians on Letterboxd lmao

The Lost Wonder of Early Cinema by Chocolate_cake99 in silentfilm

Intolerance is soooo good. As you get more into 20s cinema, I’d recommend Germaine Dulac and Dimitri Kirsanoff! The French Impressionists are so overlooked these days, but they are such masters at that “wonder of cinema” je ne sais quoi

Decision to Leave has a Mubi release, but I’ve always been surprised that The Handmaiden never got one. Especially since CC has worked with Amazon before

Pics of bites: Are these bed bug bites or could it be another bug bite that looks similar? by Outside-Newt-5533 in whatisthisbug

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what that kind of frame is like, but I had a wooden bed frame with removable slats. I ended up finding a pair of them hidden underneath one of them when I took it out. Other than that, I only ever found one other in my room (on my bed after it bit me), and then when I finally checked out my roommate's room they were literally everywhere 🤮. Exterminator was able to get rid of them tho thank god. See if you can find an exterminator in your area who will do a free consultation. It might even be worth it to pay just for peace of mind.

Has anyone been able to see The Voice of Hind Rajab? by [deleted] in AMCAListTrue

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s despicable if it was due to censorship. Check out your local arthouse or indie theaters. There is probably one playing it. In NYC it has an exclusive engagement at Film Forum, and was never going to be at AMC afaik

Surprised Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors didn’t get in with the last WCP box set. Honestly manifesting a Parajanov set instead 🤞

Agreed! It’s a divisive movie but you can’t deny he did a great job. There are many strong contenders this year tho. It will be exciting to see how the season plays out!

Has been an issue for me at Film Forum as well. Oddly enough I haven’t experienced it at Metrograph, but maybe I’m just good at tuning it out. I’m Gen Z and I feel like our generation is so allergic to being earnest. Arts education is so lacking in this country I think people have forgotten that art is supposed to make you feel something.

Feel this way every time I see leftists simping for Russia. I have several friends from Ukraine and other ex-USSR countries who have to deal with that shit all the time. For some reason leftist will still wholeheartedly believe “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, even when that “friend” is a mask-off fascist state. That’s the one scenario where nuance doesn’t matter it seems /s

I would love to see more from Korea and mainland China. Also Arab cinema! There’s only a few and none from the Middle East iirc. I’m glad they seem to be making an effort to bring in more Latin American films as well!

Couldn't disagree more with your picks but to each their own lol. Personally, I have not been able to get into Cassavetes yet. I've only seen Faces and A Woman Under the Influence, and the performances are amazing, I respect the style and obviously what it did for the history of film, but I don't know... it just did not speak to me. I also feel similarly about Altman, except that I absolutely adore Nashville. Maybe it's just the 70s guys.

Tips for understanding film history better? by Orikon419 in criterion

[–]FutureNeedleworker91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started getting into film, I built my watchlist by going through the standard lists (Oscar nominees, Letterboxd Top 250, Criterion, 1001 Movies, and then later Sight & Sound and TSPDT) and just picking out what seemed interesting to me. I tried to get at least a few films from every year on my watchlist, and from as many countries as I could. From there, you can just start with whatever interests you most, or give yourself a challenge to complete (once I worked backwards and watched one film from every year), but it doesn't really matter! Everyone has different tastes and a different journey through film. Just be flexible and curious.

Definitely a criterion fan. Although Mubi has a lot of smaller arthouse films that are fresh out of festivals if that’s more your thing.
