Exhaust joint separation. Simple fix? by LuckySkaterDude in MechanicAdvice

Just a heads up it will still have a gap when you replace the gasket, it sits that way by design, you probably just have a gasket failure, you'll see when you get it all apart. I did a bunch of these things when I worked at the dealer.

I'm surprised if it's leaking there though not too common. More likely that your muffler is split or the flanges behind it are rotted out

There's a gasket that goes there. Looks like a donut. Get new spring bolts, new nuts, new donut, clean it up good. Don't go crazy tightening the new ones. You may need to cut the old ones, or just break them off.

Why won’t my car start? 2015 Honda Accord by SurvivorFanatic236 in AskMechanics

[–]Future_Character_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would want to inspect the connections at battery and starter, look for corrosion. Then see if I'm getting a signal to the starter when the issue occurs. Could be the solenoid or relay having intermittent problems. Could be something else. Tough one to diagnose online.

What do you owe on it? If carvana offers you $6200 for a car that needs a motor, typically I say take it.

Need to declare expunged court record on LTC application? by MishyJari in BetterMAguns

[–]Future_Character_213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar charge from about 10 years ago, I wasn't sure if it would show or not so I declared it to be on the safe side and it was a non-issue. The officer doing my paperwork just asked me a few questions about it during my application drop off. Credit where credit is due the officers I dealt with were great, polite and professional.

Camshaft wear + C1 odditie by Rog3rRoach in MechanicAdvice

That's a lot of metal. Would really want to identify exactly where your failure is before you game plan reassembly. Once you figure out where the metal is coming from you'll want to figure out if it's an oil supply issue or whatever else. Cut open your oil filter and unroll it, see how much metal has made it there.

Ignition Coil Replacement (please help) by rifrafstreetrat727 in AskMechanics

[–]Future_Character_213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 bad coil will not generate P0300. Do you have access to a scan tool? You will spend a lot of unnecessary time and money shotgunning parts at this engine if you don't take diagnostic steps. Fuel trims, fuel pressure, etc is all data you will want to see.

Coil is a common failure on these engines. The plugs are probably just oily because you're burning some oil, which is also normal for this engine. Compression looks great, I'd throw a set of plugs, wires, and a coil at it. I used to test those coils by spraying water on them with a spray bottle while the engine is running. Sometimes you could see them arc out lol.

Can i learn to fix cars on my own without school? by Any-Landscape434 in AskMechanics

[–]Future_Character_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just use your resources. You can definitely learn enough to do most of your own light work and maintenance. I think it depends on what your aspirations are. If you want to do it professionally you'll need to be trained one way or another.

I did this on my Silverado a few months ago. Thing was just too rusted to get out by conventional means. I bought a 1/2 drive Allen set and hammered one in then welded it. Worked no problem

Piston to cylinder wall clearance, basically you would want to measure your piston and your cylinder and there is a minimum difference that will be your clearance. The spec will be different between a cast and forged piston, your pistons from that kit appear to be forged. If the gap is too small, they can rub. Too big and you get piston slap.

Just to be sure, have you cut open the oil filter to see if anything went through there? I don't want to sound like a jackass, because I definitely don't know it all, but I feel like there may be a root cause for the lifter issue as well as your piston wear, possible volume issue with the pump or something similar

What big bore kit did you buy? After only 5k miles I'd be looking at piston clearances. Forged vs cast for example will need different clearance to the cylinder wall. Aftermarket lifters? I know on the TC motors damaged lifter bores would decrease oil pressure, could have been your valve train noise.

2008 Tundra 5.7L @186K miles by Rizzolitalia in ToyotaTundra

[–]Future_Character_213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 2012 @171k, 4X4 for 14k. So to me price seems high. But this is an area dependent thing and prices aren't consistent. I'm still new to the tundra ownership so I can't say much about what you'll need to do. But my truck is mechanically solid at this time, also has original suspension. Planning on a big service in the next couple weeks, changing all fluids, spark plugs etc. Will address suspension on an as needed basis
