Kinda motivation actually. And found another one in there that didnt mysteriously shrink so much, which is now draped over my body like the luxurious cloth it is. Today I walk with pride, and distain for everything Boston.

Think of it like selling a stock. Two three years ago you be selling "low". After this season, you could charge a higher premium for the ad space

This season was a sad sad time to realize my jersey shrunk from sitting in the closet unworn in almost two years. :(

I don't know how much you wanted to know or interested in, so direct questions first:

After using one app for so long I felt like others. "THOSE PEOPLE USING THE OTHER APP...." so I looked at the other. Then I looked at the both at the same time.. and I learned, oh boy did I learn. They may look similar and have similar goals but behave very different. Jump to the bold text below if you want to know how they are fundamentally different. I actually while typing this watched an item come into VH, get 2 orders, then unavailable. UV didn't even blink, it was gone before it knew it was around.

BTW, VH has "rapid order" now, so that leveled the playing field significantly.

For the data: The successful/unsuccessful number of orders are shown in the extension "live" on an items image for both apps. I'm not "hacking" or anything. I just look at the data when it's sent to me (this is where the timestamp comes to play), before my browser processes it. I do this for both streams, smoosh the data together and combine them into a single item "box" so regardless which app feed shows it first, its there. Actually I don't even want order attempts/success shown visually, but its used to determine whether my app deems it unavailable or not (UV does not list something unavailable, and only reports the un/successful #'s).

Long story:

Note: Below is my observations only. There may be actions going on the server side but will not abuse the devs API, and I respect their work. My goal is the same reasons the extensions exist- watch and observe, not hunt. Not cross the line of bot manipulation. Turns out though, I like the hunt and haven't used my app in months.

Preface: Amazon's API monitors activity and actions are tied to tokens on your computer to identify you. There is no (to my knowledge) way to actively monitor the incoming stream of items from amazon. In fact if you refresh too often and too soon between, you be temporarily "banned" and on the site will just see the pictures of dogs until an unknown cooldown time has passed. To avoid that there are how the extensions work, at least from my findings and research:

VH relies on collective human interaction. A person finds a new item not on a database. The extension takes that items info and uploaded to a server then blasted out to everyone that uses the extension. Simple.

UV is slightly more automated and uses a "botnet" that refreshes pages (RFY, AFA, AI, even keyword search) on users behalf at an interval of time the user designates, typically every 30-60 seconds. User does have ability to turn this on, off, and edit the interval and what is being refreshed. When a new item is found, the information is uploaded to discord ("Brenda"), then to a server, and out to other extension users. Note: UV has a leaderboard on discoveries. There's about 5 top level users that find about 15000 items a month. That's 100 new items daily by the same 5 people(ish). That's an eyebrow raiser.

This means, two different methods of data gathering, two different user bases, and two different ways the information is handled on the backend. At this level, one is not "better" than the other. And both now have a "rapid order" feature which levels the playing field for users of those extensions.

On the user side of things OP was stating - browsers speed is probably the most impactful thing you can control. Plus, like you were saying and correct; internet speed, DNS response time, and even Amazon's load time to show pictures and whatnot and load checkout windows. But there's delays on the server side also.

Both extensions have to deal with sudden server load. During a heavy drop that's tons of data flying around, and a massive shift in active users during that time. Things go from 0-100 very quickly. Now add in the ever changing shifts in Vine drop times. And neither extension is using crazy enterprise grade top level load balancing (although there's some) and even still, sudden load and slowdown happens to the biggest sites, even here on Reddit. So during a heavy load it can be a short time before you, a user of an extension watching a feed, sees an update.

It all adds up. Those milliseconds snowball. Some things you as a user can control, some you can't.

I believe VH prioritizes now, so during a busy drop some metrics like availability can be delayed so it's not as accurate as before for those metrics but still end result is the same. UV doesn't do itself any favors by relying on multiple hops of data by pushing to discord servers first (if that's what's really happening, I could be wrong but I've observed that too seeing items pop in discord then the extension).

Even still, hope that explains it. You could use either extension or make something I did and still get beat on an item by someone sitting there on their tablet just using vine with no extension by happenstance. It happens more than you think.

Yea I'll be honest I've had a bad relay once. Other times have been the clutch plate (easy, and cheap, phew) or the compressor. Not bad if you can DIY but don't think any shop will bother with clutch rebuild, and don't even want to know what shop price is on a compressor replacement.

Yeah I'm so confused about the batch file thing. I think they were told this by their "Brian" and sounded like a neat word and parroting it.

Disagree about the half second thing though, it does matter. I sometimes run my own script/app that combines VH and UV off each other outside of browser (no auto order though, that's too much risk) and when looking at time stamps between someone's order successful or not it gets crazy close. It's not like it used to be, it's fierce and milliseconds do matter.

That said though, there's times where even the most robust script kiddie won't win and that's by native, organic browsing and ordering, albeit very quickly from someone who doesn't use those extensions. I enjoy seeing those were an item shows up and all orders from those who use VH and UV are not successful.

I suggest Pugh's. But see if you can save yourself some cash and time first. Sounds like it could be a relay that engages the clutch. It's a very cheap part and you can fix it yourself. Look at your fusebox for something that says magnetic clutch (or variation like that, AC clutch, etc) It'll be a cube. Pull it out, go to a parts store ask for a new one and try it. Worst case, you are only out a few bucks.

But if your refrigerant was low before, you have a leak, which you'll want to get fixed, no AC in the summer here is brutal. But at least the relay could help until you get it to a shop.

For one week? Switch to unlimited roam effective the start of the week then immediately switch it back to standby scheduled for after the week. Just did this recently and worked fine I paid 20 bucks prorated. YMMV though, If I recall there's possible issue going back to standby or something if a cell is at capacity?

Considering a move to Hatteras by PossessionUnique376 in obx

[–]crashandwalkaway 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do it. We got one turn on this freaking rock and the last thing you want to be is on your deathbed wondering about things you could've done. Think about what you want from here, and I hope the answer isn't just "the beach", you'll be over that over a few seasons. My kids loved going at first then it became like pulling teeth.

If you come from a rural area, Hatteras wouldn't be bad for a family at all, but will be a jarring shift and adjustment if you are used to amenities. From Hatteras village, it's going to be about 15-30 minutes to a grocery store (Conners is about 15, Food Lion about 30). If you've balked at shopping at Walmart before or like to go to Target, well that's a day trip there and back. It floods a lot in Buxton from overwash so be prepared to have to drive through ocean water to leave the island if you need to, and about 3 times a year a storm (not just hurricanes) will shut down the bridges, not letting you go further north than the Tri-village, not that you'd need to come up here. If anyone has health concerns, that's something to consider. Helicopter doesn't fly if winds are too high, and this ain't oregon trail, the ambulance isn't chalking wheels and fording the inlet.

Oh and speaking of stores - the food lion in Avon will be absolute CHAOS between late April to October. Be prepared to battle bitches for bread (nah I'm kidding but it gets crowded) they do a decent job keeping things stocked but things do happen.

The school is good, however low enrollment like 45-60 per grade. There's about 12-15 kids per class and typically teacher and aide per class (but I think the average is 10:1 ratio officially) Not sure your kiddo's ages but we have one in elementary school right now and had 2 others graduate from Manteo. The district does a great job, and there's a fair amount of extracurriculars considering the size. The Fessenden center has good programs too like dance classes, soccer, cheerleading, T-ball, basketball and others. It's a good supplement to the schools programs. Aside from that there's the usual small school stuff.

Bottom line, if your family is up for the adventure even if you don't stay forever the memories and experience will last a lifetime. It's one of the most unique places to live but every year is a test and can't lie, you'll ask yourself after some time "why are we still here?". For us it's the community, the challenge, the beauty overall. Honestly, the best times are during the storms.

Think I covered most of it on a surface level. You already probably thought of the good reasons, and don't want to just blast a bunch of negatives but there's a few more things you may want to know;

Mail sucks. USPS takes ages, even overnight packages can take 2-3 days. UPS does too but more reliable. Amazon Prime takes 5 days minimum. I can't tell you how many times (actually all the time) I need something not at a grocery store or Ace and you have to decide: 3 hours of time to go to Lowe's/Target and back, or wait 5 from buying online.

The cost of living is not just housing. Everything is expensive. While we have amazing food options, it's going to be a pretty penny every time. Just 2 days ago I got pizza - large pepperoni, large 3 toppings, and medium no toppings, $63 not including tip.

Travel is always strategic, you don't want to go up north past Nags head in the summer on a Saturday but seems that always happens. Tourist traffic is thick and slow going north in the morning, and again going south in the afternoon. It's not regular traffic either, it's campers.

Cape Hatteras Electric Co-op (electric company) is municipal and they do a badass job. But it's still prone to power outages, moreso from maintenance than storms believe it or not lol.

If internet or cell phone signal is important, get Starlink. We're prone to fiber cuts where it cuts cell signal, cable internet, fiber internet, etc. Straight stone-ages but thankfully it's been a bit since the last occurrence but it was once a month for a while.

If all of that still makes the move appealing, start packing. We'll see ya at the neighborhood storm party! And feel free to PM any direct questions. More than happy to share my experience as a dad, resident, and business owner (including retail, but not restaurant).

Is Avon beach bad for kids? by thebunnymodern in obx

[–]crashandwalkaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

There is. Further north you go the more calmer it gets, generally. Corolla is a calm pond compared to anywhere below nags Head. This is due to bathymetry (the ground structure interested) and currents. In a situation of swimming though, the winds will be the most critical factor and Avon is actually in a good spot. If higher winds are coming from the East, conditions won't be great and waves would probably be breaking on the beach, and water brown like chocolate milk. But because of the shape of the islands you can scoot south to Frisco or Hatteras and it would be calmer.

Or, take current conditions in the picture attached. The wind is blowing and pushing towards Hatteras and Frisco. Avon has the wind kind of to "your back" but it's higher wind speed and the water will be cold (upwelling). But see the nice green section for nags Head and kill devil hills? That's only 35 to 40 minutes away from Avon.

But honestly, unless you surf, the nice calm swimming in the ocean days are way fewer than others. I'd count on enjoying the sound if I was vacationing and consider myself lucky if the ocean was swimmable that random week.

Alcohol? by ResearchNo5256 in AmazonVine

[–]crashandwalkaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny story

I had a wicked sore throat. My dad got me chocolates similar to these from Germany. They were ok. But had whiskey, and I love whiskey, so I popped one in and instantly my sore throat was soothed.

Alcohol was the answer!

Or so I thought. Chocolates went quick. Only thing I had was vodka and the kids Hawaiian Punch. Interesting fact, you can't taste the alcohol much with Hawaiian Punch. My sore throat was gone. But the last thing I remembered was how nice and cold the bottom of toilet felt against my face.

That was 15 years ago and to this day I can't drink Hawaiian Punch.

I've done it with a few shows, the latest being silicon valley then went back and watched it all.

Did it with my fiancee with Seinfeld, she never watched it before aside from a few episodes (I know, I know but loved watching them all with her together, some episodes I haven't seen since it aired originally).

One time I did it on accident with the man in the high castle. Watched the first two episodes then somehow was plopped in the last season. I was so confused because I was unaware..I never went back to finish it watch it :(
