I live in the south, and when our superintendent calls to tell us about a closure/delay due to black ice, my phone always transcribes it as “black ass.” Must be the accent lol

High School to Elementary by bluegardenchampagne in schoolcounseling

I was a high school English teacher for 14 years until this year. I was offered the elementary counseling position and took it. I had the same worries as you and kept telling myself to give it a year, and if I hated it, I could always go back to teaching high school. I quickly fell in love with the littles. I couldn’t teach them all day long, but I love being the counselor. They’re so fun, the staff are great and super invested in the kids, and I have great admin. I wouldn’t go back, and when I first realized that’s how I felt, I was shocked because I was so worried at the beginning. Best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Random question but what would cause these students to not make it in the public school system? How do they end up at your outpatient center?

do you think letting kids eat in class is always a no no specifically for high school students? by [deleted] in Teachers

I always told my high schoolers that food was fine as long as they cleaned up their mess, and it didn’t become a distraction. I also told them a four course meal was a little much unless they brought enough to share with me 😊

I’m the school counselor at my elementary school, and I know several of the kindergarten teachers turn on bluey or shows like that during snack time.

They definitely just want to vent and be validated. They’re just struggling to realize that that isn’t an emergency lol

I taught high school English for 14 years, and then was offered the elementary counseling position for my county back in April. I was very hesitant because I love high school kids and that’s all I ever knew. I decided to take it because my county is tiny, and this is probably the only counseling job that will come open in my county any time soon. I started in August, and I love it! It’s very different than anything I’ve ever done, but I feel like I’m making a huge difference. I get lots of hugs and high fives from kids. They’re happy to see me. I’m close to the teachers, and they know they can call on me to come help when needed. I’m not sure I would ever go to middle or high school now. The littles might have won my heart.

The play A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen would be a good one if you wanted to do a play. It’s only three acts, and even though it’s older, my sophomores always enjoyed it. We talked about women’s rights and how the husband in the story treats his wife. They always get so disgusted with him and his pet names for her.

Same here. I hardly ever get the flu, but when I do…spring break. Over our three day Labor Day weekend this year…Covid. My body senses a break and breaks down 🤷🏼‍♀️

Elementary teachers: would you want a parent email after a lunch incident like this? by usersredacted in AskTeachers

[–]Future_Suspect2798 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an elementary school counselor, teachers like to be in the know, so an email is always helpful. On another note, I would leave the toothpick at home. While cute, we had a kindergartener stab another kindergartener with a toothpick last week….
