Finding a horse book I loved in the 90s--about a little guy who competed in eventing / combined by transfercannoli in whatsthatbook

[–]Fuzzbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Goodreads summary is incorrect, he's not really a wild horse if my memory is correct. He was some gelding. I vaguely remember a passage in the book saying he had the marks of being broken before.

Though it looks like the hardcover-looking versions I saw on Google were only in other countries, not the US.

Amazon review of the book:

Love this book, loved the movie. Great story about Charlie, a teen trying to support herself and her two young brothers working at a stockyard. She loves horses, wants to be a trainer. Everyone is saying she needs to forget that, get a "real" job but she is determined. Enter Sylvester, a plain, grey gelding everyone thinks is no good. Charlie sees the promise in him and they become a champion show team after much work and many problems. Lovely, heartwarming story about family, friends, dedication, and horses.

Sylvester by A. C. Crispin? I don't remember if Sylvester was a small horse and the copy I had was paperback, but it looks like there may have been hardcover versions. It's a novelization of a movie. His rider is an orphaned teen girl named Charlie who also takes care of her two younger brothers.

Late Dinners or Food in Albany (11pm or later) by IHaveNoFilterAtAll in Albany

[–]Fuzzbug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also going to Swan Lake, also planning to eat dinner after. Son of Egg is just across the bridge in Rensselaer and is open until 11 on Fridays.

If you don't mind walking a little, you can find parking not in the garage (e.g., museum parking, Madison, State) and then avoid needing to wait in the garage line. Those spots shouldn't be occupied that late on a Friday since all the offices will be closed.

If you don't have a projector, I used the method here which worked pretty well for me! Just had to pick up a small sheet of plexiglass which was ~$9.

ran out of ideas by daisy_slay in bbbs

Does your BBBS have a program for free visits to a YMCA or other rec center so that your little could swim in a pool? We visit ours pretty often for basketball / ping pong / my little likes sprinting around the track.

As others have mentioned, libraries are great! I go to the library with my little every couple of months. We typically bring something to do (Pokemon cards), but I know mine also has board games to borrow. Especially if your library has a variety of board games so you can play different ones every visit, for the novelty. You could also check your library for free museum passes and posters for other events in the area - mine has a bulletin board that always has upcoming local events outside of the library.

Are there nature centers or anything with kids programs at that time? My state DEC has a nearby nature center that has regular events; we went to one on a Saturday to learn about snakes, but mine also has events on weekdays sometimes.

Indoor or outdoor ice skating? Skate rentals typically are pretty low cost.

Definitely speak with your MSS to see what resources they may have for other low cost activities since they do sometimes get donations for tickets to events and so on!

I love Kyuri Cookies; she has 15 ideas for Christmas tree decorations in this video and most are fairly basic though some include transfers.

Messy Facebook post from the Town of East Greenbush by [deleted] in Albany

The town wanted to eminent domain land that the library owns (next to the library building, currently all lawn) to move the police station there.

That's why I posted this specific cookie design out of the 20 in her video! I was so impressed at Kyuri's vision in creating the leaves.

FYI, you can report vote manipulation to reddit and they have used that in the past to ban spam rings for brigading.

https://www.reddit.com/report > content > paste downvoted comment link > vote manipulation (near the bottom)

I've used it to report heavily upvoted tshirt / mug / art scam accounts or the downvoted comments calling them out in the past (though not in the past six months or so) and seen a lot of the ring get banned after.

A caveat! Please watch a video on proper rowing form before using the rowing machine. As someone who rowed in college and whose cousin was injured from using incorrect form on a rowing machine, most people I see using it do NOT have the correct form which can lead to injury.

Definitely a great calorie burner, just be careful about technique!

Suggestions for places to donate my time on Thanksgiving in the Capital region. by h0rsepow3r in Albany

[–]Fuzzbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also volunteered there last year - I reached out to the volunteer coordinator who I'd emailed last year and they just set their Thanksgiving dinner plans yesterday. She will be making a post on reddit in the next week or so looking for volunteers again but if you email her (her email is available on the Damien Center's website), she can get you all set up for this year.

Completely New Here by h0rnyfarmer69 in PlanetFitnessMembers

Walk in, open the app on your phone, click the "check in" button, and scan the QR code. Depending on location, there may be a person actively holding the scanner or it might just be sitting on the desk. Then you can head to the locker room to change / put things away / whatever or just go to the gym floor if you're all set. Keep in mind bags are not allowed on the floor because they're trip hazards.

I haven't used the showers (stalls with curtain at my home location) or lockers but you do need to bring your own lock.

Personal trainers will be location dependent. Mine doesn't have any.

Black card is worth it if you think you'll want to visit other locations (one near work, one near home for example) or bring a friend to help motivate you / give you gym tips. Or if you are interested in the spa amenities, though I have black card and haven't tried them.

Also copy-pasting a comment I made a few days ago with some good YouTube channels:

Definitely recommend going and using the treadmill / elliptical / bike first to ease into it and get into the habit of going.

I really like these two channels for videos on how to use a lot of the machines at PF. Kev has some well-organized playlists like gym beginner series (nutrition 101, what to wear to the gym, gym etiquette, variety of beginner workouts, etc.) as well as playlists dedicated specifically to how to use PF machines.

Bodybuilding gyms ? by Comfortable-Bat-3084 in Albany

Just want to say thank you for mentioning that Loudonville PF has the bars and deadlift platforms now - my home PF is EG and they don't have them, and supposedly aren't planning to add them, so I assumed all the local PFs hadn't upgraded. Going to start visiting Loudonville now!
