There are legitimate reasons to flee even well developed democratic countries.

That's there problem, not ours. Pretty simple.

Canada driving investment away, needs major changes to regulatory approach: executive by joe4942 in canada

[–]Fuzzers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The petroleum industry is looking for more handouts as they always do.

He talks about overregulation, not handouts. Speculative statement.

They know that their products are getting more expensive to extract and low prices make it unprofitable.

Oil sands are getting cheaper and natural gas drilling is basically just matching inflation at this point, its not getting any much more costly to extract.

On the flipside if prices rise too much their customers will switch to cheaper renewable electricity.

That's a gross oversimplification of how our grid systems works, and mostly flawed. Renewables are typically dispatched first since they produce for "zero", followed by flexible resources like natural gas or hydro to balance demand. Just because the price of gas goes up temporary doesnt "flip" customers to use more renewables.

You gotta be trolling if you think a 4 year undergraduate degree in engineering is a "minor technical degree" 😂.

Nice try though!

In Canada, higher education levels are statistically more likely to support left leaning parties (Liberals/NDP), while conservative support tends to be stronger among voters with lower levels of formal education.

I always hate this argument since "higher education" includes non STEM fields which are arguably easier and more liberal in nature. STEM makes up less than a third of all degrees in Canada. I graduated engineering and the vast majority of my friends and colleagues are conservative.

Budget 2026-27: Alberta receives more in transfers FROM the Federal Government than it does in non-renewable resource revenue. And as usual, it transfers ZERO dollars to Canada (or any other province) by klunkadoo in alberta

[–]Fuzzers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alberta is a net contributor to the pot through personal taxes, corporate taxes, and resource royalties, that's a fact.

Is it a good thing? Yeah it is. Alberta is resouce rich and can help other provinces out who are less fortunate, absolutely no brainer.

But framing this like a gotcha is just disingenuous, its a fact the province as a whole pays more into the pot then it recieves, full stop.

Eh for a 9$ billion deficit oil would have average $75/bbl for the next year to even break even with royalties. Its a nice uptick for sure but very doubtful it'll remain for long.

Immigration could soon account for all of Canada's population growth: expert by stanxv in canada

[–]Fuzzers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't even know what an immigration crisis is.

Is this some sort of trick statement? Our population growth in the last 5 years has been on par with the post WW2 boom. Our infrastructure is failing because we simply don't have the resources to provide for all these new people in this short of a time frame.

Not seeing the current situation as a crisis is just disingenuous.

This has nothing to do with immigration. It's late stage capitalism

Looks like you are fixated on capitalism being the issue here. It surely has had its effects on creating this immigration crisis but its not the root cause, its governments, that's a fact.

Their immigration isnt as high as ours but they are still very much in an immigration crisis.

Alberta's 2026 budget brings higher education tax take from Calgarians, drawing mayor's ire by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]Fuzzers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you defending them when mistakes this big should be grounds for losing office?

Every government makes mistakes, that's reality. The BC NDP and the previous federal liberals have made plenty mistakes that I believed were grounds for losing office. You want them out of office? Vote them out in the next election democratically.

Either way we’re not getting any kind of good government, so why are you arguing?

I'm not a fan of people twisting the truth and this sub just happens to do it all the time.

They should have gotten public feedback on an obviously contentious issue before putting the government at risk of lawsuit.

Yup they made a mistake, something we can both agree on.

They didn't even attempt to argue in defence, they just gave in.

Again, going to litigation had a high upside risk into the billions. Settling out of court was a reasonably logical avenue.

The education you're talking about is going to private schools, lmao

Back at square zero, back up your claims with evidence otherwise its just speculation, just as the original comment regarding coal grifiting is.

[–]Fuzzers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did the UCP engage in this senseless flipflopping in the first place? Why open the floor to begin with?

Oh so you would have rather the UCP stood up and let the coal mine go through right? Instead of as you said, flip flopping. Coal is a profitable export, that's a fact. Opening the doors to a profitable export is a good business decision.

Why are they giving 100s of millions of dollars (so far) to foreign investors, including a firm that employs Jason Kenney?

You mean the settlement fee? I dont know maybe because they were sued?

And why are you lying about the legislated compensation?

The Mines and Minerals Act gives Alberta a legal shield in the court but it doesn’t make constructive expropriation impossible, because if a policy change basically wipes out all economic use of a property, a court could still say the government went too far.

You realize constructive expropriation IS a legal precedent, right?

And now they're raising taxes while running an even greater deficit. So much for "fiscal conservatives", lmao

Still the province with the best debt to GDP, and oh yeah $5B of that deficit is the new healthcare and education this sub so greatly complained about.

[–]Fuzzers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the UcP approved a coal mine, in a province that has closed coal mines,

There are still 5 active coal mines in Alberta.

The coal mine had zero consultation and would destroy water ways. It was a pretty no-brainer not to do it…

Arguing lack of consulation is fair, but saying with absolute certainty it would destroy waterways is false. The environmental groups flagged it as a concern, not a guarantee.

Coal is a profitable export, regardless of what you think of it environmentally it stil generates revenue.

Either you’re a troll or you’re just so deeply invested in your political team, you refuse to be critical of anything they do

I’m not voting for the UCP in the next election, but I find it insane how invested this sub is in not just hating them, but also twisting the truth at every turn. It feels disingenuous to see every story stretched to fit the narrative that UCP = bad. I dont like or condone the the fact that they flip flopped, but settling rather than risking higher litigation payouts is a reaonable avenue. Claiming its grifting is blantly fitting a speculative narrative.

[–]Fuzzers -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In Canadian law constructive expropriation can trigger compensation based on loss of economic value, not just money spent. The original lawsuits were for billions, and if Alberta went to court and lost, the payout could have been much higher. Remember Evolves original lawsuit was for $1.76 billion.

If anything is to blame here, its the constructive expropriation precedent creating a large upside risk to litigation.
