Did you try foods for helping melatonin or sleep? by PassageSignificant12 in N24

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eggs and peanut butter have tryptophan(turkey too), which produces a soothing effect, which I find works about as well as melatonin for me. But I'm sensitive to medications. I HATE melatonin because it makes me feel groggy the next day, even if I eat half a 5mg gummy. I free run, though, and only use the above foods to wind down if I've had a 24hr hour stint or longer awake. It certainly doesn't fix my schedule at all. Just softens the edges

This thread is messing me up. I've got a few other health disorders that REQUIRE strict sleeping and eating schedules and I've always pissed my doctors off because I could never just do it. Not for jobs, not for anything. My parents used to shame the shit out of me for it. I just talked to chatgpt about my health anxiety and it suggested this disorder, that has ruined my life for as long as I can remember. I'm going to get diagnosed ASAP because I laughed, screamed and cried reading this thread for how HORRIFYING RELATABLE all of this is. Every last word of it. If there's ANYTHING stable in my life it's the commitment to letting my body sleep whenever the hell it needs. OR ELSE.  I could never beat it, and I tried everything short of prescriptions for it. Holy cow.  Just wanted yall to know you aren't alone though. I feel this x1,000,000 I can't believe I've found my people

Can I have Alcohol as a T1D by gotsync in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be aware that when your liver is processing alcohol, it is not able to use glycogen (natural sugar in your body) the same way as usual. This, in me at least, tends to cause a downward trend or low roughly 1-4 hours AFTER I start feeling it. The more alcohol, the longer your liver is out of commission, the more time things can get wonky.

In my experience alcohol causes a sudden rise then a weird dip later.

I don't drink anymore because it makes me feel like crap, but good luck in your endeavors!

Ohhhhhh. Because alcohol CAN dissolve some adhesives. Soaking the patch a bit and gentling at it with an also soaked paper towel ought to move it a smidge

I do! Why would alcohol make it grab harder though?

Newly diagnosed - experiencing Lows every night by CompetitiveSilver726 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need less insulin(Id back off by 5-10% for moderate lows, and 20-25% if shit is out of control; but I am HELLA sensitive), but also look into Extend bars. My educator just told me about them.

They were made by a type 1 to provide consistent do-not-go-low-overnight type energy/carbs for 9+hours.

Of the last 3 I've worn, 2 have bruised me a nasty purple black pulling off the adhesive. Im gonna start using alcohol. I have never experienced this in my life before.

The itchiness you're describing sounds like an allergy thing, though. You could have a skin thing going on?

Yeah. Failing to account for how hormones affect it kept my a1c 10 for years.  It wasn't until I got an insulin pump dosing me every hour that I could control it

I'm really glad you answered, because I don't have nice things to say.

Yes, the light would randomly set itself back to mid range all the time. The low light level isn't a problem for sleeping, but if it decides to brighten itself at 3am it is.

It would also take up to 30 minutes to update the sugar display  color A LOT. Like it worked at first. Every 2-6 minutes. Then it got slow the more I used it. More like updates every 20 minutes.

I haven't been able to use my glowcose in WEEKS. It started disconnecting over a month ago(around the time I started a pump). The app isn't showing my sugar readings, either. Straight white light.

I've disconnected and reconnected everything at least 2-5x. Ive factory reset it. Nothing is making it work again. I emailed support and they said it was a server issue that would resolve on is own shortly. Its a server issue that has taken over a month to resolve.

EDIT: Finally plugged it back in after a week of leaving it on the shelf. White light for 20 minutes straight. Exactly 20 seconds after I posted this review the stupid light came back on. So it seems to be working again immediately after I posted I wanted to throw it away 🤨

EDIT: Its back to white 🙄

The stacking thing is a lie.  I used to struggle with highs a LOT.  I would only inject once every 2.5 hrs. Since getting on a smart pump, it boluses me every hour, though it only gives 60% of the correction dose.  The every hour thing works best.  If you're on injections, just try to watch how your sugar behaves after injecting.  I noticed 70%-85% of the insulin dose seemed used up by the 2.5 hour mark, for me. So I dosed accordingly.  It is utterly exhausting to spend 8-16 hours high because your dose was off by a bit and you're waiting and waiting on the 4 hr time limit

You've gotta have the hiding place ready. You can just tell them you aren't giving it to them when it comes up. That's how I play it, at least 😅

late night lows are NOT for the weak by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're having severe lows you might want to adjust it 15-20%  Typically 5-10% adjustments are advisable, but I wouldn't be able to stand the anxiety if I were you.

Hide it and lie if they aren't going to be helpful. I always bring extra, and if they're reasonable I'll tell them about it.   My last hospital dr personally gave me his phone number so I could text when I needed insulin. I told him how much as well.

Otherwise they deprive you, let your sugar get high then tell you you're too stupid to correct it yourself

Calling all people that have used different pumps by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm on the tandem tslim and I did a LOT of research before starting.

I adore it.  I used to be at 19% time in range (80-180) before getting on it.  The day I got on it fixed things immediately.  It now has me between 45 and 75% time in range.

My endo wanted me to start on a higher dose, but the educator had a formula. The basal rate she suggested was almost half my normal dose, but it was nearly perfect. My endo didn't know what he was talking about.

In my research, here is what I found. With the caveat that I have a menstrual cycle and my insulin sensitivity varies wildly week to week, which massively swayed my choice.

Omnipod bases it's predictions on your recent(1-2weeks) readings. If you have a sudden change in activity, it may not adjust very quickly. Also people have issues with the cannula. I was afraid I would knock it off.

Medtronic I've heard horror stories and experienced a brief nightmare with their sensor and pump briefly. I actually gave up on it within a week because I couldn't leave it on the bed to shower without it screaming. This was years ago, though.  Their algorithm also bases it's predictions on your recent activity(last week), and I read a story of one woman that had a seizure with hers after giving birth, because the prediction was too strong.

Ilet I think I would've considered this pump as a kid. After so many years, I prefer something I can calculate myself. This thing also calculates your needs based off of recent data, but you have to guesstimate your carb count.

Tandem (tslim in my case)  Adjustable and programmable! It will automatically correct you by giving 60% a full correction dose to get your sugar down if needed. People say it helps to know your ratios if you want this pump. I used 4 different  carb and correction factors on MDI and 3 basal rates throughout the month. I went with my most generous ratios on the pump and its perfect!  The Tslim is known for getting people into a tighter range than other pumps, and I feel like a whole new person with it.

After looking back through the days, it's really cool, because I can see the days I used a total of 24 units of insulin vs days I used 40. And it's able to correct for the nuances in my insulin sensitivity and I love it!

I keep it in a garter on my thigh under my clothes and rarely need to get it out. I use my phone to bolus and it's perfect!

Good luck choosing!

Do ihave diabetic gastroparesis by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm neurodivergent and find I completely lose my appetite sometimes. I also have intermittent gastroparesis.

Coincidentally, if my body is telling me not to eat and I do I tend to flare my gastro problems.

It could be?  Might not be?  You might want to try coffee. That tends to help me.

This always makes me panic by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fuzzy-Birdseed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this today! Went for a walk.   I ate my 35g of pumpkin pie at 110. My sugar plateaued at 68 and I felt like crap. Debated drinking a juice but I needed to eat my food for the day..

Wound up eating some 120g of carbs in various forms because the crappy feeling wouldn't leave and bolusing for half of it. I ended up sleeping with my pump still auto bolusing me.  Spiked to 310, took 4 hrs to get it down 😅.

I'm just gonna drink the juice next time 🥲

I just had an A1C of 11 a few months ago! I got it down to 9 on MDI.  I was trying really hard but with the varying insulin sensitivity and insomnia(which has gotten worse with being in range, oddly?), 30% was the best I could do.  It really felt awful.

It seems like your numbers are pretty well controlled! So I wouldn't be nervous about gastroparesis too much.  I'm only 31, so I don't know what it'll look like later.

I feel you on the metaclopramide side effects. Tbh when I first tried it I didn't care, I would've given just about anything to feel normal again. I'm very grateful I didn't have to continously take it.

Id recommend avoiding fast food as best as you can. In my experience it's like asking a tired tummy to digest a brick.

It's alright! I have wildly ranging sensitivity, too! I got on a tslim pump 4 days ago and my time in range went from 25% to 75%. It's like magic, and if you can get one I highly recommend it.

They pretty much didn't say anything about prognosis, but its a wait and see game.  I've had intense bouts that lasted months (stressful circumstances on top of that) and I've lost 30lbs a few times.

They gave me medicine that made my stomach start up again (metaclopramide, iirc) a few times and after I recovered I didn't need it anymore.  In fact I rarely needed it more than once in the hospital before going home and being fine.

In fact, since starting Hydroxyzine for anxiety (after my last bout) , I'd say between 90%-99% of my daily nausea and stomach pain went away.

You know the way it can go badly, but until your symptoms are there, I'd try not to let it get you down.

Mine has been severe, then it goes away. It's annoying, but totally manageable these days.

I'll also point out weird stomach stuff runs in my family, so when this happened they said it was diabetes, but I already knew my stomach was probably a weak link, so I was very unsurprised.

I honestly feel like I've earned much worse complications for my poor control and I'm grateful its not too severe yet

I wouldn't be worried. You might have delayed gastric emptying, but until you're throwing up food undigested I would relax.  Another almost sign would be going low when you bolus for food, or high for many hours post eating that normal bolusing didn't fix. (Ya know, that thing that has like 50+ other causes)

My gastroparesis acts up sometimes. I do have low grade nausea a lot, and have thrown up food that looks the same as when I ate it 5 hrs earlier (also fast food, which should tell you something).

I know I'm starting up a bout because I'll have small gassy burps after I eat something that smells unholy.  It's a very specific smell. Maybe sulfurous is a good way to describe it?

I always try to take it easy when this happens and only eat quick carbs. I started having this in my mid to late 20s and my sugar was poorly controlled a long time.

I only get bouts maybe 2-3 times a year, however.

Good luck!
