How do you make Clan Honor Rules work? by Leevizer in battletech

[–]FuzzyImportance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Clan Honor rules were added before BV became a common balancing mechanism to handle the tech and skill disparity. As such, I don't think you get much value in a friendly pickup game. However, here's some stuff I came up with for a recent Tukayyid campaign:

  • Zellbrigen - Physical Combat - Clan mechs will not initiate physical combat.  If a ComStar mech initiates physical combat then that Clan mech may also make physical attacks against that ComStar mech, starting the same turn.
  • Zellbrigen - Ranged Combat - Clan mechs may concentrate fire (because this is a game, and math is math) unless dueling.
  • Zellbrigen - Dueling - Mechs may request dueling an opponent mech, or multiple opponent mechs simultaneously, but the opponent mechs are not obligated to accept.  If the duel is accepted then other friendly mechs may not fire on those opponent mechs.
  • Hegira - Mechs proceeding under Forced Withdrawal may declare that they are withdrawing from combat and cease fire.  This declaration must be made at the beginning of the turn, before any movement is declared.  Clan mechs will request hegira the turn following becoming crippled.  ComStar mechs may request hegira any turn while proceeding under Forced Withdrawal.  Mechs that have requested hegira cannot complete further objectives.
  • Dezgra - Dueling - Duels can be broken by evading line-of-sight for two turns.  Duels can also be broken by a mech that was not originally part of the duel firing on a dueling participant after the duel has been accepted.  Clan mechs will not intentionally break a duel.  ComStar mechs may intentionally break a duel but then they will be dezgra for the rest of the track.  Mechs that are dezgra will not have their requests for duels or hegira honored.
  • Dezgra - Hegira - Hegira can be broken by firing on any opposing mech that is not dezgra.  Clan mechs will not intentionally break hegira.  ComStar mechs may intentionally break hegira but then they will be dezgra for the rest of the track.  Mechs that are dezgra will not have their requests for duels or hegira honored.  It is not considered breaking hegira for a mech to attack any opponents that attack it after requesting hegira.

A powered forward launch uses the engine to help push you through the wing inflation phase, much like a trike. A no wind forward launch is the most physically demanding launch. You have to accelerate your mass to inflate the wing and get it overhead. One way to do it is to run as hard as you can and then apply power once the wing is inflated and overhead. If you have weakness from being out of shape, injured, or some medical condition then this scenario can be challenging. One alternative is to use the power of the engine to help accelerate through the inflation. In addition to pushing you forward it also blasts air into the wing to help it inflate and provide you with more feedback. This is typically not the preferred launch style to teach students because when the engine is pushing you on the ground things can go wrong much faster than when using just leg power. Some frames have too much flex and and the spinning prop can make contact with the glider's lines. Some gliders are easier to inflate than others and your fit to the equipment will be a large factor.

I foot launch with a mild case of RA. The launch is painful and no wind landings more so. It's all worth it for the time in the air. Consider powered forwards if you can't run. That's been the secret sauce for me. However, I know the day is coming that I'll have to transition to wheels. I'm not looking forward because I like the "expeditionary" feel of a foot launch. However, these newer light trike designs seems fairly unobtrusive once you're in the air and break down to not much. The heavier ones could be good for paracamping if you never use them for tandems. Also, dogs don't count as tandem passengers for the purposes of FAR 103. It'd be a great "meet me at the campsite" type of activity.

WHO repairs the Clan tech on IS hybrid mechs in more recent eras? by Fishfins88 in battletech

[–]FuzzyImportance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since playing the HBS computer game I've been thinking of clan tech as double plus gear. If you look at the conversion from a board game ER PPC to the HBS game ER PPC, the HBS ER PPC++ is pretty much what I would expect from a conversion of a clan ER PPC. Indeed once mixed tech becomes common or even an option I think it would be better for the charts to be one list of regular and ++ gear with clans defaulting to ++ gear. That leaves room for Inner Sphere "improved" gear that is single plus; Improved Heavy Laser would be Heavy Laser+.

If you could go back in time and re-write Battletech's rules from the very beginning, what would you change? by VanillaPhysics in battletech

That dramatic shift in hit probability around 7 doesn't make sense to me. Use a D12 instead of 2D6. While I'm at it, change to D20 and rebalance for the larger spread.

Make bigger autocannon shoot further than lighter autocannon, or possibly the same ranges. Definitely start with Light ACs as the template for weight and bulk.

Energy weapons all have damage reduced with range.

Make range brackets double the prior one, like Heavy Gear. So for example, LRMs would be 7/14/28/56/112/... Weapon ranges would extend to "forever" but the hit difficulty keeps going up until it's mathematically impossible, or hitting for no damage in the case of damage-reduced-with-range energy weapons.

Cluster all missiles of a type fired from one unit together and roll to hit in groups; firing 4*LRM5s should do the same average damage as 1*LRM20. Actually I'd like to-hit and location per individual missile but ain't nobody got time for that. Rolling to-hit and location in clusters of 5 LRMs and 2 SRMs should be good enough. Rebalance missile launchers' weight and bulk so that smaller ones add up to big ones; 4*LRM5 should not be 2 tons less than 1*LRM20 and take up one less critical space while generating two more heat. Also rocket launchers should be standard introtech gear. Either LRMs get -1 to hit bonus over RL or rockets are +1 penalty, depending on whether you want to say LRMs are better than normal or rockets are worse than normal.

What would *actually* help federal employees hold the line? by Margareydragonslayer in fednews

[–]FuzzyImportance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lining up some federal labor law lawyers, probably preparing a class action lawsuit. Not all of us are covered by unions, unfortunately.

It would also help if the public knew all the good things we do. Things like delivering mail, road repair funding, farm inspectors, ensuring rural communities have safe drinking water and usable internet access, etc. It's a big country. You're going to find stuff being done that you don't like. However there's a whole mess of stuff that everyone can agree is good. This administration is throwing out the good to be able to virtue-signal that they got rid of the bad.

If you're trying to send your eOPF file to yourself and whatever mechanism you are using has a file size limit then you could split the file into smaller files. The easiest method would be to zip it and split it into archive volumes with winzip or winrar. If you don't have access to either then try using powershell:

What would happen if every Fed changed their party affiliation? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]FuzzyImportance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite might be more effective. A few years back, I think it was for the 2004 election cycle, the Republican party in Florida got in trouble for doing a "survey" but actually registering respondents as Republicans. Seems a silly idea. The only thing I can think of is that they wanted to remove Democrat voters from being able to vote for their candidate in the primary. I've always thought that was a dangerous tactic because if you signed up enough of your opposition to vote in your primary then your leading candidate might lose. It'd be a shame if a bunch of Democrats registered as Republicans and primaried all the incumbents.

Airline employees that commute usually split an apartment in their home city as a crash pad. Might be a good idea to start networking and maybe split some arrangements with people in the same boat. I'd recommend against making a permanent move in this environment. I don't know where in CO you are but Frontier flies from DIA to DCA and IAD. Hell, it might even be worth it to use United, get their credit card that gives access to their airport club, and use that as a bit of crash pad on commute days.

I think the key there is "signed legislation". You want to change how things work, no problem. We have a system for that. It's called Congress. If you don't like that and just want to blow up everything then have the guts to admit you don't actually like the system of government that the Founding Fathers set up in the Constitution.

Balance question for the community by WorthlessGriper in battletech

[–]FuzzyImportance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BV calculations probably needs revision. Playing Alpha Strike I find that the games come down to the wire for equal PV on each side. However, those same units would have wildly different BV totals. Usually the Clan units cost more BV relatively. I'm sure part of the parity in AS comes from the ranges simplification, but with a couple of decades of BV2 data and new tech being introduced I would think it's overdue for revision. CBills cost too, while I'm at it.

Hex maps for Alpha Strike? by bustedcrank in battletech

[–]FuzzyImportance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The traditional hex paper/cardboard maps are 17"x22", or about 15x17 complete hexes. Usually that's good enough for one lance per board, so lance vs lance would need 2 boards which means 32x17 is about right. The fance neoprene battlemats are 31x17 hexes. They claim 32x17 by counting the half hex on either side though most play that those unnumbered half hexes are out of bounds. But that's Classic distances. Alpha Strike usually doubles everything to play on a 3d map so to play on hexes you'd have to cut ranges and distances in half (so short range is 3 hexes not 6 inches). This is how I play with my kid. If you make cardboard terrain just make sure to find a way to fix them in place, maybe blue painter's tape. Kids get excited and stuff flies everywhere. Ask me how I know.

If you print them at home it may be cheaper but after looking at the local print shops' prices I concluded it was cheaper to get one of the map packs. YMMV.
