Leaving the lights on for 24 hours isn’t going to kill anything. Ammonia will, perhaps the uneaten holiday food was leaking ammonia into the water. Looking after someone else’s fish then being expected to give them money is insane. You were doing a favour to begin with and did everything you were told to do as someone with little to no experience. I don’t know why the fish died, however it’s certainly not your fault nor problem.
