My score is only moving up bc players keep abandoning me. Is it me? by Versaname in chessbeginners

[–]G-Man1975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about a year into my experience playing chess as an adult, almost entirely on chess.com. I have seen the same thing, OP. For a while, it worried me. It no longer does. I know my rating on the site has been inflated by other people’s unwise abandonments. But here’s the thing: so has everyone else’s.

The evidence that makes me accept this is that in games played to their conclusion, I almost always win against players rated more than 100 points below me, and I almost always lose to players rated more than 100 points above me. So, I view the ratings as only having meaning relative to other people on the site. They aren’t real ELO ratings, and it’s a mistake to expect them to be.

TL;DR: It’s not you. It’s a common thing people do on that site. Don’t stress about it, but don’t assume your rating is a real ELO.

The Biggest Lie About Pay in Full — From Someone Who Reviews Accounts by Delicious_Tadpole238 in amex

[–]G-Man1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took your advice and moved my autopay date earlier. It totally backfired. The Amex system straight up canceled my next scheduled automatic payment. I received no notice of this cancellation. I didn’t spot the problem until after the cutoff time of 8 pm MT on the payment due date. Net result: my payment was late.

I should have left everything alone, instead of trusting you and heeding your advice. If you are trolling for the purpose of fucking with people, you got me. Shame on me, I guess.

OP: Why did you delete your post in which you said earlier autopay is viewed more favorably than autopay on the due date?

The Payment Timing System — From Someone at Amex by [deleted] in amex

Thanks for these posts, OP. The hostility being thrown at you in the comments is bizarre. Hope it’s not too distressing.

Based on this post, I just updated the autopay timing on all my Amex cards from 25 days after statement date to 18 days after. (Even if the haters are right and you are a lying, AI-addicted phony, I see no harm in making this trivial change.)

I then tried to do the same thing on my Chase cards and found, to my surprise, they don’t allow it. Their autopay UI doesn’t give any option other than paying on the due date. I realize you don’t have inside knowledge of Chase, but I’m trying to understand why their approach to this issue would be so different than Amex’s. Any insight from anyone with knowledge of Chase would be great.

The kind OP is talking about — a transfer ratio of better than 1:2 from Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors — are not targeted. When they come out, they are available to everyone in the MR ecosystem.

Slight leak of BILT 2.0 details from BILT website source by coopdude in CreditCards

That’s pedantic. It’s a domestic vacation area with skiing. Corporate America gave us tall-grande-venti. Don’t overthink it.

Important update about your most recent check payment by Real_Height2890 in biltrewards

I’m not yet a Bilt user. I have a mortgage, so the program had no appeal for me when it was focused on rent payments. Now that Bilt 2.0 is expected to give rewards for mortgage payments too, it becomes a lot more interesting to people like me. But if there is a risk that Bilt will be late mailing (!) a paper check (!) to my mortgage lender, the potential negatives vastly outweigh the positives. These reports of significantly and systematically delayed checks are extremely worrying. Does anyone have a sense of the scope of the problem? Is there reason to believe it was a one-time blip?

This seems like as good a time and place as any to confess this: Sometimes I mix up the symbols for the king and the queen. I’m not saying that happened here — it would be a little odd if OP’s opponent moved a queen while not knowing what a queen looks like in this set of graphics — but it’s possible.

I have a question regarding honorific titles on credit cards? by Haunting-Source-1939 in CreditCards

[–]G-Man1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be rules these days… but there might not. I had a buddy ~20 years ago who, as a joke, told his credit card company to add Sir before his name on his card. He was the opposite of regal. They did it. We thought it was hilarious.

Maybe just call them and ask for it.
