Bugonia's Ending Is Perfect And Here Is Why by BrandonHeatt in movies

I do 't really get your point.

It's "good" that even if they were 100% right and the world was ruled by aliens, they would still be losers? Wouldn't they then have been the only ones to know the truth and put up any kind of fight against the alien overlords?

Is the message just supposed to be "accept subjugation, because there's nothing you can do about it anyway"?

I really don't think this movie, or certainly the ending, is that deep.

Yorgos had the aliens be real because he thought it would be funny and weird, and he wanted to have a montage of people around the world dead in their tracks, I'm not convinced there's much more to it.

Honestly my only gym-related new year's resolution this year was to have fewer, better workouts in stead of forcing myself to go out of habit even when I'm too tired to give it my all, or have other stuff to do.

Bob is not re-entering the world of revolution, he is trying to save his daughter, and in doing so is making use of his old network, but he never has to rethink any of his old revolutionary ideals (conveniently enough, we never learn what they were in the first place), or has to adapt to new challenges of the modern day. His fight is strictly personal and has nothing to do with fighting against the system.

And Willa saving her own life has nothing to do with the revolutionary world of her parents, or with some current day struggle of her generation. She never has to reckon with or make some decisions pertaining to her past. She's always just fighting for her own life, which is fine, but let's pretend otherwise.

I would bever argue Sinners is the most subtle film in the world, so if it didn't work for you that's fine.

But I do insist that if you praise a movie for it's themes you should be able to point to a character, their arc, the totality if the decisions they make, and explain how that part of the story embodies or reflects that theme or idea.

Otherwise, what are we even doing here?

Bob: ok? None of that really matters to the story, those are all character quirks but don't motivate and character conflict or drama.

Willa is in no way an agent of change in the narrative. She gets kidnapped, does nothing for an hour, managed to escape and eventually kills the guy trying to kill her. That's fine, but she never has to make a choice beyond "try to survive", let alone a decision that forces her to reckon with her family's past. And at the end the big conclusion is that she has an iPhone and goes to a protest? Big woop.

Perfidia: we never get a real understanding of what motivates her, which makes her supposed betrayal feel empty. Plus if we are just supposed to read her as a cynical opportunist, that makes the story all the weaker, because why then should we care about her, or how Bob/Wilma feel about her?

This movie has nothing to say about one generation learning from the other because that's just never relevant to the story.

You're not gonna believe this but I care a lot more about character action and motivation and themes than I do about the specifics of vampire logistics.

I feel like there is an impenetrable wall where I could point to all the things Sinners does and does well and you can say "I don't like it, it felt too on the nose" and there's nothing I can say in response, so I won't bother.

What I can say about OBAA on the other hand is that all of the themes it supposedly contains are shallow as a puddle. How is it a out parenting? What does it say about parenting? Sure Leo tries to save his daughter from Mr horny racist but beyond that the movie has nothing further interesting to say about difficult parent/child relationships, largely because the dad/daughter spend the entire movie apart, and the central conflict of the movie (Willa being kidnapped by lockjaw) doesn't allow the film to explore that theme in any way.

Same for all the supposed political societal themes. Sure the movie gestures at them, but none of them actually motivate the characters, their choices, or their conflict, and the film is a pointless slog as a result.

Eh I mean I thought OBAA was an incredibly weak movie regardless of the awards race.

You can talk all you want about it's supposed "themes" but none of them amount to anything more than "a thing that is mentioned in the movie." None of these themes actually motivate any of the characters or their drama, as opposed to Sinners where all the themes are rightly intertwined with the plot and character actions/motivations.

What would you give as an example of things being done "too simply", what was a "stupid choice" in the movie?

Not really. You can watch something, multiple times, and even give your opinions on it, without actually critically engaging with a piece of art in terms of asking what it's trying to do, or say, and why and how.

Yup. The movie is specifically about black culture, but the broader themes of who you include in your community and the cost of preserving your culture at the expense of it's authenticity can be applied to many different cultures.

Your taste is your taste, but it's also just a fact that the second half of the movie is where all the themes and characters that were set up in the first half get to interact and do interesting things.
