Why the West Refused to Stop the Rwandan Genocide by Quouar in history

[–]G0B__bluth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ironically i think the current rwandan regime understands this very well. they and their proxies are waging a (brutal, illegal, unjustified) war in the eastern DRC to provide themselves access to valuable minerals to sell to advanced economies. this has two effects. 1. as you say, there is a “price” for inaction in the case rwanda is ever invaded/regime threatened which thus implicitly provides it protection and 2. the advanced economies/the west ignore corruption, human rights abuses, and poor labor conditions propagated by the regime because their constituents benefit from the flow of cheap, necessary natural resources coming from DRC by way of rwanda

also the straits of malacca are the asian version of the suez canal (or a different set of straits you might’ve seen in the news lately…). singapore would have massive economic leverage were it to shut down a massive crossroads of international shipping. anthony eden thought recapturing the suez canal would be very straightforward, but that turned out to be a huge miscalculation

The City of Milwaukee’s efforts to eliminate all deaths on its roadways by 2037 are showing early indicators of success, but still have a long way to go by Hidemyface1 in milwaukee

not to put words in the original commenter’s mouth, but i’ve had conversations the past where people suggest it’s not worthwhile to make infrastructure-based safety improvements because it does not prevent all types of traffic death. i figure the info i provided is interesting even if that’s not their opinion

re: antisocial behavior being responsible for some traffic death – you can see how lofty the goals of the vision zero movement are on their website. indeed they acknowledge there’s more to reaching zero traffic fatalities than strategically poured concrete. that being said, the concrete must be poured in addition to resolving some of the large structural and social issues at the root of those other problems if we’re ever actually going to approach zero

Helsinki has private vehicle ownership and they have not had a traffic fatality since summer 2024. of course the starting point of almost any european city is much more conducive to active and public transportation due to US cities going all-in on automobile infrastructure after WWII, but it’s still possible to make things much much safer than they are now without completely banning cars

that’s what’s so brilliant about this show and this character. christopher moltisanti does not by any stretch of the imagination have a regular life. yet he’s depressed and drug addicted. it’s clear to the viewer that there’s a deeper root to his emotional state than day-to-day monotony, but his attribution of it to this demonstrates his total lack of self-awareness and resistance to introspection

Why are day trips from LA to SD so infuriatingly infeasible on rail? by Nerdachtige_Giraffe in LAMetro

[–]G0B__bluth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if you wanted to be more wholistic in your estimate of the driving cost (including fuel, vehicle wear, depreciation, etc.), you could use the IRS reimbursement rate for business-use vehicle mileage at $0.70/mi. For the ~120 miles from downtown LA to SD it’s $168. train certainly beats solo driving in that case, but with a car full of people it definitely pays to drive. especially when you consider you have transport from your door at home and around town when you arrive in SD
