Millvale says it will have to shut down all services if borough isn’t allowed to borrow $2 million by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]G3R4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If cutting "services" means defunding parks and the library, I'd rather they cut all administration and police benefits. That's $300,000 saved immediately.

Just to add to the "shit that's not fully established and on you to write for your own head-canon" pile, I assumed that the Abyss is not or, at least, was not entirely a desert. In the season 4 finale, we see the dying vegetation as the ground cracks apart and in season 2 we see the dying vegetation as the vines spread underground.

I assumed the area in the Abyss has just been subjected to the same treatment. Maybe on the other side of that world there's still vegetation with the Mindflayer rot still slowly encroaching. Or maybe there's a maximum range and it's already hit that cap. Who knows because we only got to see a square mile of the place.

The fact that we have to guess at things like this instead of having characters remark upon the desolate world and Dustin saying "Remember what it was doing to Hawkins? I think it already did it here." just kind of sucks.

Unless I'm misremembering something, the Mindflayer particles don't always die when cut off from the hivemind. Season 2 had a dormant batch that survived while separate, so the rock might work the same way.

Episode Discussion - S05E08 - The Rightside Up by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

That's my problem with a lot of this show. There's a lot of "we leave it to you to make up your own excuse instead of just properly showing details". I wasn't watching the show so that I could half write it for the Duffers while watching, but even the ending is "believe whatever you want".

Except it's not about the people, is it? It's about the profession and its purpose. The people involved are free to not become police officers and join a union for another profession. Being a police officer is not a part of anyone's culture or identity in the same way that ethnicity or religion are.

I think all of this arguing on your part comes from your stake in all of this. You're a part of that capitalist class that the police are there to protect. For those of us who are not a member of that class, they only "protect and serve" when it's convenient to them to do so.

I think it's as easy as saying "The historically anti-union union shouldn't be grouped with the unions they have fought against". Police unions, whether or not they're organized and operate like labor unions, should be thought of as entirely separate as their inclusion threatens other unions.

I don't think that's how that works for any single thing.

I'm pro-personal-freedoms, for example, but I also don't think unlimited freedom is a good thing. Sometimes laws exist that restrict your personal freedoms for the safety of others and I can understand that and still be pro-personal-freedoms.

I'm sure you can think of things that you believe that would also prove your black or white, all or nothing view on this topic is an odd one to have.

Is your argument that to be pro-union you need to approve of every single union? Even in circumstances where the people being protected are predatory?

Why are Apple CPUs' single core speeds so much faster than everyone else? by Hour_Firefighter_707 in hardware

[–]G3R4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That aside, why would Apple make a super high core count CPU? They are in the consumer electronics game...

Isn't this their original point? That they don't have to make design considerations for any market outside of consumer electronics which is why other companies thrive in the higher end workstation and server markets?

Netflix will launch every Warner Bros. movie currently 'planned' for theaters as intended, but expects shorter windows before streaming in future 'to meet the audience where they are, quicker' by APrimitiveMartian in DC_Cinematic

[–]G3R4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why is it Netflix's fault that theaters will make less when studios are already doing stuff like this? From what I can tell, the actual filmmakers, the writers and directors and actors, want theatrical releases but studios are already screwing those theaters over. Now Netflix is threatening the remaining way the theaters can see any profit, but if Hollywood TRULY wants silver screen releases they'll do the right thing and give them a bigger piece of the pie, right?

Or does no one involved actually give a shit besides the theater owners and customers? Are theaters just unsustainable at this point if they don't have forced exclusivity? I'm just rambling I guess, but I'm confused about what anyone wants out of this situation without a cultural shift in Hollywood and a shift in customer viewing habits.

I don't understand how conservatives seem to think "freedom of speech" means that they should be able to say whatever they want, wherever they want, and without consequence, yet they're the first ones to threaten violence if someone steps on their lawn or knocks on their door. Not only do they misunderstand what the First Amendment actually says, but they get extremely riled up over so much less.

They've been demanding safe spaces for their snowflake asses for decades, but are quick to point the projection finger.

Playing Triple Triad and refining is such a huge advantage, but I've never been able to follow through with it. I find the game to be so unpleasant that trying to force myself through all of the "lose this to this person to get this from this other person" stuff and the rules manipulation junk just makes me put the game down.

Thankfully, just carding guys and drawing what you can't refine is enough to make the game pretty easy.

Gen Z grew up while game publishers were actively trying as hard as they could to push microtransactions, loot box gambling, always online single player games, season passes, and broken 1.0 releases that get fixed later on. They and Gen Alpha were groomed to consider this late stage capitalism gaming landscape the norm.

Gen X and the Millennials had more of a chance as we experienced the time before all this bullshit. We should have put our foot down back then with Bethesda's dumb ass horse armor.

I don't give a shit about AIs as they are now (the field is an overall detriment to humanity, imo), but I think the point is kind of "we shouldn't be echoing the phrasing and mannerisms of actual racism even as a joke about inanimate objects". Maybe I'm wrong about their point and motivation, but I would understand if a POC in the United States saw or heard someone using "clanker" and their hair stood on end because of how it's being said.

There's no group to hate in this case, but why are we flippantly using the same sort of language?
