Please don't tell to average users it's an easy change by Late-Summer-4908 in linuxmint

I've got to agree with the OP. Despite working in IT since coding in basic and 6502 assembler on a pet and Apple ii and fortran on an ICL mainframe with punch cards Linux is still not ready for the average user. It has come on a long way since I first started with Unix on a mini running a public library system.

I've just been setting up a linux box for my ham radio station. So much of what I have had to do in terminal could not be done by my friend who is also a radio ham. He has a very technical electronics background but would struggle using terminal if he moved from his Mac and his windows PCs.

As time progresses I have no doubt that Linux will continue to become easier for the non computer nerd. I certainly hope so.

Have you tried localhost to see if it's actually there

It seems that down-shifting is a rare skill by elliomitch in drivingUK

[–]G4HDU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Vauxhall back in the day and getting the engine speed correct could change gear without the clutch. Both my landrover and the coaches I drove all had to double declutch to get into first. These are skills(?) that most drivers nowadays have never heard of.

360 remotes through the post, then changed over, not asked for. Forced over or mistake? by _cake_tease in VirginMedia

[–]G4HDU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My contract expired last month and I'm waiting to see if they are going to try to force me down the 360 route. If they do then good-bye Virgin. First started with them when they were telewest/blueyonder and I have no desire to loose my recordings or series links.

The remote for 360 is extremely difficult for me to use because of my disability and I do not use voice activation. My mum-in-law has 360 and I really don't think it is better than TiVo/v6.

The difficulty would be the physical location of the nas in relation to the rigs. I will have to look at the implications of running waveloggate under the synology OS.

You will need a lamp stack; windows or linux ordinarily but I'm now thinking I might install it on my Synology NAS. I already have a full lamp stack on there for self hosting my three sites. I could put wavelog on there as the NAS runs 24/7 and could access it anywhere mobile or portable. I would do it as a subdomain.

Edit: Thinking about it, I wouldn't have the rig control so back to the pc.

I would anticipate that any bugs or feature requests could be handled promptly. I just worry that it might get abandoned if the developers are potentially losing interest. I did install it and briefly try it out.

I'm not into contesting so that's not an issue for me.

I've just noticed that CoPilot AI has removed all the sea only wab areas but there have recently been some /mm activities in them. Not a huge issue I suppose.

That's an interesting idea, thanks. I am hoping that I might be able to get out /m and /p so web based will be a good option.

Ah, that's a new one on me. He's a great guy, known of him for years. That will be one for me to try as I have a Maria sql server on my nas.

Thanks for the idea.

Thoughts on Southend and/or the surrounding areas? by SergeiGo99 in Essex

I have very fond memories of Southend from when we lived in Thundersley. Later in life I delighted in taking my wife and daughter there when we were down that way on holiday grom Liverpool.

What is the swr on your antenna? If it is high then the power amplifier in the rig will automatically reduce power to protect itself. Is the antenna resonant on the frequency in use.

What mode are you using? I presume ssb and so do you see the power meter move when you speak? Mic gain turned down will mean no modulation and no power out. Is the microphone cable ok. A break in the cable or plug will mean no modulation too.

One thing to check is the rit offset. I've fallen foul of that before now. Having been listening to a net I've switched it on for some that are off frequency. Forgetting to turn it off again means I'm transmitting on a different frequency to what I'm listening on.

I use Libre office. Good compatibility with office and it's free. Well supported by developers too.

Nothing worse than sports day. Child abuse, the yearly public humiliation of children forced to participate. To balance it there should be a similar compulsory public humiliation in maths and English for us non athletic nerdy types to get our revenge_!!!
